I have started getting screen flickering issues on my monitor (Dell 38" ultrawide) connected to by 2013 Mac Pro by mini-DP to DP cable.

The setup had been mostly issue free for the first few years of its life, but in the last few months the screen flickers randomly. No specific app or image seems to trigger it definitively, but it is definitely happening.

I assume it is a heat issue, apparently the D500 an D700 were quite susceptible to overheating. I have already installed a fan control app and also cleaned out the mac by disassembling it and blowing out all the old dust.

However the issue persists, so I assume the cards are on their last legs.

Are there any repair options short of taking it into apple and being charged hefty fees to replace the D700s?

First I would try a different cable, a different output port from the MP, and a different input port on the monitor. Just to eliminate the possibility of a bad cable or connectors. I think your monitor has an mDP port, in which case you could use an mDP to mDP cable.

If you have a spare drive, try a fresh clean install of MacOS and see if the problem continues. This will identify or eliminate software issues as the problem.

If you have another monitor, see if the problem exists with the other monitor. Maybe it is the Dell panel going bad. (Alternatively, if you don't have another monitor but you do have another computer, try the Dell on that computer.)

If you feel it is simply overheating, you could try disassembly and reapplication of thermal paste. Factory application tends to be not as good as the personal touch.

If none of that works, then from process of elimination it is probably the D700. I've seen some people report success in getting their cards replaced by Apple for free, even outside of warranty and outside of the extended repair campaign. YMMV of course.

Failing all that, you could use an external GPU setup.

i had the same issue with TB2/mini dp connectors. Random flickering, going dead etc. I tried a new cable and it worked.
