Wow. All I can really say is wow!!! I hope that you really don't believe what you wrote.
By your logic, their are laws against it and since you don't get caught or prosecuted, it isn't breaking the law. Operating a Meth lab, speeding, and driving under the influence must be fine as long as you don't get caught or kill anyone as well?

only they authorities, look for murderers, meth labs and speeders but why dont they look for ip address with high bandwith to see what they are downloading?

Why do people make comparisions that are straight up retarded? Stealing a Farrari and stealing macbook pro/iphone. Come on you guys have nothing else logical to compare this to? The difference in stealing these stuff in real life is you would get in a lot of trouble and it is recorded in your record. Whereas, if i'm downloading illegal softwares/pirated softwares from the internet, do i go to jail? Or are future companies will not hire me because i have a record of downloading pirated softwares????? My god people think think think think before you make a stupid analogy again.

P/S: about the last paragraph in your comment. Yup, i would not go to outback and pay 30$, ofcourse!!! But i would go to my mom's house for the same steak, mash potatoes, fries and etc., ALL FOR FREE!!!!!! So again, stop making stupid examples because it is not helping you justifying your point. Unless you come up with something more logical.

Our comparisons aren't stupid. In either case, you're "stealing stuff in real life." Software is just as real as an iPhone. Just because one is a physical item that you can hold and the other is information in a computer, they're still both real products, and stealing either of them is illegal. Just because something is easy to steal doesn't mean you're entitled to take it. Yes, you can steal software, and true, you might not get caught. There's lots of things in life that you COULD do, but that doesn't mean they're all legal or right. You're justifying it by saying that it's easy and you won't get caught, so that makes it ok. If that's what makes you feel good about it and helps you sleep at night, go for it. I do hope that someday people like you get caught, though. Maybe it would knock your attitude down by a notch or two.

By the way, as for stupid comparisons...eating steak at your mom's house isn't stealing. Unless she finds you obnoxious and refuses to feed you, but you go and take the steak anyways. Then you're stealing from her, which would also be wrong. But you seem to have a misguided sense of right and wrong, so you probably wouldn't care.

i wonder if the pirate police here have ever, gone over the speed limit, found something and put in in their pocket, jaywalked, parked in a no parking zone etc etc

I have broken the speed limit (and been caught) and jaywalked (but that is not illegal in all states), but when I have done so I have done it at my own risk. I don't try and justify it to others based on price issues. I just do it, and when I am caught I know that I will pay the price. There is a difference between breaking the law and knowing one is doing so but taking the risk anyway, and believing that one is not breaking any law because they haven't been caught or it is easy. Morals and values are the differentiating factors (I at least feel guilt when I do something wrong).

only they authorities, look for murderers, meth labs and speeders but why dont they look for ip address with high bandwith to see what they are downloading?

So again, as long as the cops aren't coming after you personally, that means you can do whatever you want, right? You people are seriously messed up.

Your idea of practical is what makes you justify the theft. I could apply this to several things in real life and by your thoughts never should I pay for anything again. If the software is so expensive and such a limitation, then transfer to a school that provides the software or change majors.

By your logic I should never buy a fine wine or good food (or any food for that matter) as it is only good for a limited time and then is worthless. Why should I pay for food that I can only use for a one time shot???

I agree on the student issue not being related to poor or wealthy, but the argument still stands that people use the "poor" student excuse. They think that since they are not making much if any money, they should be exempt from paying for things that can be easily digitally copied (books, software, and entertainment).

I honestly can't see how using software on my own computer for educational purposes is any different than using it on a school's computer for the same purpose. You can't compare tangible items like a Ferrari to an intangible item such as software. The developer wouldn't know if I was using it on my own computer or the schools. It's not like I'm stealing a prospected $5000 from them, otherwise I would be forced to use the schools computer.

If the choice would be between buying the software or not buying it, it's wrong. That's not my case. I'll agree I am still stealing, even though I don't register, activate, or make use of any of the softwares support features, but no matter what decision I make in my given circumstance, the developer would be getting no money from me, or anyone of that matter. And I would be getting no money from use of the software.

The monitors for your ISP do if your ISP has bandwidth limits. Lots of them do packet snooping and tracing, but just like the authorities, they only "look" for it after the crime has occurred. IF they happen upon it during the commission of the crime they weren't technically looking for it.

Oh my god, unbelievable. All you said was if i find a 30$ steak to be expensive then i would go elsewhere and i stated i would go to my mom's house and eat the same steak for free. I don't give a damn if i'm stealing or not stealing, all i care for is i have that steak for dinner for free, do you get the point now? I can go to my uncle or aunt, or any other relatives and eat the same dinner for free, and many other sources.

By the way, i am more than happy to go up to a police officer and tell him that i've been downloading pirated softwares my whole life and i will download one again tonight. I want to see what would happen.... Maybe i'll video tape it and maybe you can eat that for dinner? lol :)

I agree that the Ferrari wasn't the best example, but the licensing that the school paid allowed for it to be used on their computers only and not yours. If you are using a copy from the school at the same time that the copy they purchased is being used on their systems it is violating the licensing codes (unless they have a bulk license which depending on numbers in use could violate it as well).
I know this is far fetched, but someone actually paid for the Ferrari (either the dealer to have on his lot or the new owner), so one could argue that Ferrari (the developer) wouldn't know if the car was sitting idle or being driven by an owner or thief, therefor they are not incurring any financial loss either so it must be okay.

I know this has gone way off the original topic, but it is an interesting study in human behavior and justifications within society.

It's obvious that you don't care if you're stealing or not. I just wish you'd quit trying to justify it to other people by saying that it's ok because it's easy or because you won't get caught. What you're doing is still criminal. If you're happy with it, fine. Just don't try to keep justifying it to others.

The software I "steal" is a trial and I block the activation from allowing it to lock the software after the trial period is over. I am not using the schools license nor am I using a "hacked" license, which would be like taking a Ferrari. If anyone paid for the Ferrari, dealer or owner, and someone took it, it would be wrong, whether Ferrari as a company was affected or not.

I guess the way I justify my "stealing" (which by law I am stealing) is by saying since I am not "taking" something it is not wrong. No one loses anything, besides the school who loses out on the opportunity of having me make use of their lab, which I am sure they are fine with. I also doubt that even 90% of other "pirates" have the same respect that I do towards software companies.

No sorry, stop saying "you won't get caught". I'm not even scared to get caught, or am i hiding at all. SO stop trying to justify that it is against the law. IT IS NOT! No one cares, end of story. It is not a criminal act or anything that will get me fined or sentenced. It's a stupid argument, if you're happy about buying then go ahead, good for you. BUt for people who can't afford it (students and younger kids), this is what i recommend. There's nothing wrong about it and if it's free, hell why not?

So a good and logical example would be, if i bought MS office 2015 and my brother needs it for his school work but can't afford 200$ software. I then decide to give him my CD to install it on his computer. Now, will i go to jail? Will i get a criminal record?

Anyways, i don't want to get offtrack with the OP. Sorry i will not discuss this pirated thing anymore.

Guys back on topic :)

The best are probably ClamXav and Virusbarrier Express I think and both work with Lion as well:

http://www.clamxav.com/

However as the first poster said as long as you keep yourself away from websites you wouldn't wanna visit on your pc either (merely assuming you were previously a pc user).. don't do it on your mac and you are safe!

Rolling back the clock, blocking activation, removing activation, generating keys, under licensing, borrowing a copy from a friend, using academic/non commercial copies for paid work, dongle hacking etc doesn't matter; you're still a thief lol. And nobody cares that you're a thief but stop trying to sugar coat it and make it seem like you're in the right. Just admit it; you stole it because you want to use it but can't afford it. OK. That's all there is to it. Stop blaming your school, software companies, puppies, religious deities et al for your thievery.

Edit: Sorry for being off topic OP. Don't bother w/ AV, just use precaution.

its stealing i agree but more like stealing a used item then a new, the manufacture already got their payment :D

No one has to justify if pirating software is against the law, only if it is right or wrong. It IS against the law (where the law's jurisdiction applies), whether you agree that it is right or wrong. There is no changing that, unless you went through an appeal to lift the law, which would probably never happen. If any law agency cares or not still doesn't change the law.

I honestly can't tell if you are trying to troll or not. But really this thread should be more about how useless anti-virus software is rather than how wrong stealing is.

I never denied that I wasn't (by law) a thief. I was simply stating that I am not taking anything, therefore I do not feel I am wrong. I was being accused of taking something, not violating ToU or EULA. There is a difference between what the law calls stealing and actually taking something.

I also already admitted that I am stealing because I can't afford it, hence why I said I have no problem buying ~$1000 worth of software a year, but when it comes to spending ~$20,000 I do.

I read that iantivirus is good. I downloaded it which was simple, but when I clicked on "protect my mac" it should change from "off" to "on", but doesn't. Any ideas?
I recommend you uninstall iAntiVirus and use ClamXav, if anything. iAntiVirus not only makes bogus claims about malware to hype the need for their product, their malware definitions list includes many items that aren't even malware. I question the accuracy of their scanning process.
iAntiVirus is one app that makes inaccurate claims about the existence of Mac malware, in order to hype the need for their product. This post will give details.

I did not start the pirating argument. By the way, who are you to tell me if i'm trolling or not? Go read up on what a troll is before you insult someone.

Ok you would be *OFFICIALLY* charged with Copyright infringement of software. That's what the law says.

And you have yet to show me how you plan to rack up $20,000 in software purchases at $5,000 for 4 years.

I know what a troll is, and I didn't call you a troll. I simply said I couldn't tell if you were trying to troll or not.

Your persistence on trying to falsify something that is undeniably true is very much troll-like behavior.

And the fact that you took my comment as an insult is essentially only insulting yourself.

None of AutoDesk's simulation or CFD packages are available with education pricing.

Basic CAD packages such as Inventor are useless for anything other than learning the software with education versions. Which passed the freshman level you aren't learning the software anymore.

Sure, there are other alternatives like Pro/E and Solidworks. Using them isn't ideal when your using mostly AutoDesk products in class and there has been situations where having my own copy of the software would have helped a lot, but still wouldn't be worth buying. I'm not saying that I have to pirate software or that I even need it, but not needing it is more of a reason to not buy it when it makes your life that much easier.

Given the fact this thread is completely derailed and its now on the piracy, its being closed as the work effort to try to clean it up, exceeds the value of trying to keep it open.
