Monday to Friday I try to fast for at least 12 hours every day but usually it's nearer 16.
I started seriously 3 years ago because I needed to lose weight and the weight just fell off me, but I've continued it because I find I sleep a lot better on an empty stomach but also because there's a lot of evidence that it's very good for you in many ways.
Fasting seems to have a lot of benefits amongst them that the stretch receptors in your stomach get a chance to relax to so you feel fuller on eating less afterwards. It also stops your biome from being over fed.
Studies suggest that after about 12 hours when all the glucose is used up your body starts scavenging and this does make a lot of sense. It starts to digest all the cells that aren't functioning properly especially white blood cells and 'possibly' pre cancerous cells amongst others (this is partly because they can only use glucose so when starved of glucose they get weaker. The bit about only using glucose was proved in the 30s and I forget who but he won the Nobel prize for it. It's not proven to have an effect on cancer and I don't think it does but weaker, pre-cancerous cells just maybe. It's a bonus if so)
It also is reckoned to reset allergies.
I generally have felt a lot healthier this way although I haven't experienced any special clarity or energy.
I do occasionally fast longer if I feel like it and manage to get through three days from time to time.
At the moment I haven't eaten anything for 36 hours simply because I haven't felt like it.

I think it's a natural way for humans to be. I think for most of human history we've had periods where we had made a kill and then had plenty to eat, but not every day. I also think the winters were hard and it was natural for us to starve over the winter months.
There's also loads of cultural evidence of fasting for religion and that was almost certainly because they found it was good for you.
Indeed, 'Breakfast' means exactly that. (So does 'Dejeuner' in French) We've done it for thousands of years and it's only in the last 60 years we've all got fat, got allergies and developed diabetes.
Photos of our grandparents show they were all thin so it isn't genetic.

I would tend to agree that we now live in a situation of plenty that isn't always good for us and that situation is a surprisingly recent one. For example my parents were children of the war and here in the UK rationing didn't finish until well into the mid 50s. (As my mother would say everyone got enough to eat but it was just enough and everyone was hugely envious of the largesse they saw overseas).

Having said that - I personally think there's a lot of genetics at play though as a lot of things we think of only as modern diseases have aways been around. The ice man Otzi (bronze age) was in surprisingly bad shape in terms of cardiovascular disease (link here) and there's been recent reappraisals of cancer incidence in medieval burials (the incidence wasn't as high as today but still significant.) Link here. There's even some suggestions that diabetes could be connected in some way to Neanderthal genes.

Also bear in mind that practically of the people that have been studied from prehistory are 50 or under... I think there's a reason that most of us are pretty bullet proof until then and then well... it all start to slide ... well it is for me ...

@ipsedixit If you’re going to link an article to the topic, Link something with less add/spam, even Safari gave me a ‘pop-up’ warning.

It's fine if you use UBlockOrigin. I didn't see any spam or ads. I'd guess that Brave blocks everything as well.

Well, you’re using an ad blocker, so naturally that wouldn’t be an issue. But the majority of viewers probably are not. That’s why I put out that disclaimer.

Team Safari (Apple) really has stepped up their game with prevention when it comes to spamWare.

I think the majority of people use ad blockers, I mean, why wouldn't you?

In my opinion, your link is poorly written and reads like Forbes Magazine, which isn't good. It is a lot of hyperbole and tabloid writing.

There are a lot of people with eating disorders. I don't fall into that category. In my opinion, those who have a eating disorder and had one in the past should consult their doctor before entering the realm of fasting.

I don't do intermittent fasting at all, but my mom does. She'll avoid breakfast until 9AM, then eat dinner around 5-6PM. She'll only eat small snacks throughout the day and she tells me that it's helping her slim down.

Seems cool but I don't need to slim down nor do I want to skip lunch. But I also try to avoid eating massive meals too.

if she is snacking, she isn't fasting. that's just basically calorie counting without counting. more food restriction.

fasting is literally not eating.

Oh, that's the term she's always used when talking to me about it. And she won't even snack before 9AM or after 6PM plus she'll typically tell me she's not eating whatever I'm making for lunch. So I've always had the impression that's what intermittent fasting was because that.

i mean i guess 6pm to 9am is actually 15 hours. 🙂

If you have a watch which measures body stress, see what happens about 15 hours after you start your fast. Your stress levels should go down along with average heart rate.
Interesting. Thanks for mentioning this, as I'm thinking of trying out fasting.

I fast 20 hours per day on the weekdays.

It allows me to eat a pretty opulent meal when I get home, and still lose weight.

I sometimes do a three-day cycle, water fast-normal-water fast and then back to eating normally, and I usually lose about 3 kg doing that. I’m still experimenting with it as part of a longer range fitness and fat loss program, I‘d like to lose about 25 kg to get down to a more healthy body fat percentage.

I usually have an 4-5 hours eating window between ~3-4pm - 8pm usually.
The time on the day can shift a little though.

I am an evening/night person, so my meal window contains a small snack usually before yoga/workout and then lunch/dinner.
It frees up a lot time and gives more focus. So it's a win-win for both mind and body.

Fasting? No. Being an athlete in another sporting lifestyle, won’t allow me to do that. However, I do think it’s really important to detoxify at least once a week, and another sub-point in conjunction is using the flushing system with copious amounts of water. Your body needs a reset point (More specifically your G.I. tract).
