MP3 players have really gone out of fashion.

The iPhone 6 does pretty much everything the iPod touch 5 does and more, so it is unlikely people will spend cash on a redundant item.

Looks like the 2014 refresh signaled the end.

Not necesarily, ipods are still being sold hence an upgrade this year still seems possible (Apple streaming service).

ipads are redundant too and still being sold...

If they don't announce something alongside the streaming service at WWDC, it's presumably a goner.

Don't get your hopes up for an iPod touch 6th generation at WWDC, either.

What 2014 refresh ???

I assume he/she means the "refresh" that gave the 16GB model colored aluminum, a rear camera, and lower prices.

Not really a refresh, but if it floats your boat...

Touch 5G 64Gb : £249
iPhone 6 64Gb : £619

Nope. I have no idea why anyone would want to buy one.... ;)

The iPod is dead. Dont get you hopes up. The future is the iPhone. I only know one person whop still uses an ipod, and thats to supplement music on his droid

iPod Touch still does the job

Guess what folks. Some of us DON'T regularly carry a cell phone. When I do carry my seven year old prepaid Motorola flip phone, I like that I can hold the phone to my face while looking up websites and contact lists and e-mails (when in WIFI zone, which is usually) on the Touch.

For $200 and change, I OWN the phone. No lease, no monthly payments. It is mine.

My kids have iPod Touches or used iPhones with no service (which is functiobnally the same as a fatter iPod Touch with more processor and less memory).

Folks like us may not run in most of your posters' circles, but the display of iPod Touches in the Best Buy and the Wal-Mart are prominent. Someone is buying them.

I hope you guess the lottery numbers too.
We dont know what will be the future.

Why buy an iPhone to use wifi only and calls/SMS? Wake up, guys!!!!
Well, because the Iphone line's been getting upgrades and the Ipod Touch line hasn't ;) ... but yeah, not at 3 to 5x the price.

At 3 to 5x the price. For me, it's pointless to use an IpT5 as an mp3 player when I use an Ipod classic, a dedicated MP3 player with scroll wheel for physical touch feedback, and can carry 74 GB of music and podcasts. For me, Ipod Touch does what it's supposed to... access iOS.

I may have to carry around 2 to 3 devices to do what an Iph6 does (I use a Galaxy s4 for my smartphone), but they all do them very well.

Wwdc is for Developers announcements not hardware.

September is the Month.

Hrm, really? Here's a quick and likely incomplete list of new hardware and hardware refreshes announced at WWDC in recent years that I remember off the top of my head:

  • 2006: Mac Pro
  • 2007: ?
  • 2008: iPhone 3G
  • 2009: MacBook Pro, iPhone 3Gs
  • 2010: iPhone 4
  • 2011: None?
  • 2012: MacBook Air, MacBook Pro/Retina
  • 2013: Mac Pro, MacBook Air
  • 2014: None

Is it just me or doesn't it make sense for a new iPod Touch to be released at WWDC? I mean if they are debuting the new Beats Streaming service I personally think it would be smart to release it then. But I wouldn't be surprised with Sept or Oct launch

All ipods touch have been announced between September and October always.

Only if OS 9 will not run on the Touch 5.

But so far we only have another rumour about a possible ipod touch 6...hope a case gets leaked soon..

So far an ipad pro seems more feasible than a touch 6.

Apple won't necessarily begin production before announcing/shipping. If I'm not mistaken, they didn't begin production early with iPod touch 5th generation.

The iPod is no longer a major product for Apple. They don't need a "we're shipping this today/next week," and they're not going to break their backs for the secrecy needed to make that happen.

The official presentation of these devices has always been on September/October as i already stated over and over again.

If you don't want to believe there's gonna be a new ipod touch 6, good for you lol, i mean you are free to believe that.

Me being objective i won't know that for sure until next fall.

The only thing i know is that Apple shouldn't be selling the ipod touch 5 anymore, it's unethical for a company to still selling that slow piece of junk on 2015 at those prices...unless they are preparing a replacement this year...still unethical because the replacement should have arrived last year's fall not this.

From all I keep hearing about, Apple doesn't seem to be a wholly ethical company

So? Apple announced the first iPhone in January, the next three in June, then iPhone 4s came in October, and now it seems as if they like September. They refreshed the 9.7" iPad in both March and October in 2012.

They generally refresh about every 12 months, but never put too much stock in these "schedules." You'll set yourself up for frustration and confusion. If you really want to get technical about when iPod refreshes happen, all the iPod touch refreshes (except the most recent, September 2012) were at events dedicated solely to music. If the rumors are to be believed, WWDC 2015 will be their first keynote genuinely focusing on their music services since then.

I would bet that we will either see new iPod(s) or the entire iPod line gets killed silently, and I can imagine a certain route they could take with this new streaming service which would render the remaining iPods useless. We'll see.

Surprise! Basically no other major company is, either.

I'm not oblivious to that. Seeing stuff like this...

... Not counting the "sin one", I'm not surprised at any of these really. And I wouldn't be surprised if Samsung and other tech companies are just as much of a dick as Apple is (FTR, I use an Ipod Touch 5, and a Galaxy s4). However, Apple with it's "Think different" slogan seemed to try to pass themselves off as this slick, cool, hip company trying to change the world (presumably for the better), but (Surprise!) they turned out no better than anybody else.

they're turning more and more into the 1984 Big Brother that they mocked in their early commercials...

I succumbed and bought a 64GB iPT 5th gen this morning. I was trying to hold out for a 6th gen (hopefully with 128Gb), but my 4th gen (32 GB) has started to become, in a word, moody.

....

I’d really hoped to hold out for a 6th gen, but didn’t feel that I could. .

How is the performance on your 64GB iPod touch? How full is your hard drive? My iPod touch G5 32GB (with 4GB available) is a bit slow performance-wise. Nook app recycles whenever I open it. Never did that before the current iOS upgrade, but that might be the Nook app itself. If the next gen iPod touch never materializes, then 64GB iPod touch G5 might have to do. (I've had and loved iPod touch G3, G4, and now G5. Size is perfect.)

MP3 players maybe, but who on Earth really wants to listen to such a low level Mp3 (320 kbps) audio quality anyways?

Hi Res DAPS (such as Astell&Kern, Sony, IBasso, Calyx M, Pono, and even Fiio)...plus all the other portable Amp/DAC units...are becoming very popular today.

It's now time for Apple to step up to the plate and provide at least 24/96 audio quality from their iDevices, including the iPod Touch...if they wish to remain credible within the portable music market.
