People seem to want Wifi 6, even better cooling, and higher display resolution. Personally I am fine with the way they are.

"people" will want Wifi 7 - EVEN better cooling and EVEN higher display resolution when the next one comes out. People will never stop wanting more and more importantly wanting what they don't really need or use.

You can upgrade but beware of this design flaw.

Still got my base 2015 15". Typing on it right now, actually. Keyboard's nice, screen's beautiful, and running Mojave, it's fast and fluid. Although the 16" is very very nice, I'm still on the fence as to whether I want to upgrade or not. $2400 is a lot to spend on a computer that's only marginally going to get me a better computing experience, if any at all. I'm a writer, so I don't need balls-to-the-wall computing power. Just need a nice screen and decent keyboard. Got both of those in my 2015. But my credit card is always on standby, so you never know.
Same here, love my 2015 i7 - use it with Apple 24" Cinema display port monitor & an external HDMI monitor.

In the same position - don't really need the 16" but my Apple Card is ready if Apple does a nice financing like they did with the iPhone 11.

Keyboard is the best and glad Apple went back to this older design in the new 16".

My 2014 and 2015 are almost always in clamshell mode and hooked up to mechanical keyboards, mice and high-resolution monitors. So the 16 inch display would be lost on my most of the time. But it might be nice for those few times when I'm mobile. Money is not the issue for me. I just don't see the need to upgrade and I'm lazy about selling off the old stuff and moving the stuff from the old machine to the new one. I will get a 16 eventually though - I just am in no hurry.

My needs are screen resolution and RAM and I solve the latter problem by splitting up my workload across two machines. A new machine would mean that I wouldn't have to do that.

I have now played with them twice in store, and my main takeaway is simply that this is the machine that should’ve been the 2016 machine.

Other than the audio system, so much of it is so barely iterative that it’s a little frustrating that this is where the lineup is in 2019 going to 2020.

If I was still a 2015 owner and it was doing everything I needed, I think I would continue to hang on until some bigger changes.

Actually, now I've come down off the euphoric high a bit I'm beginning to question what actual benefit I will get from upgrading is. As I'm not constrained by the performance of mine that's 9/10ths of the real benefit of this machine lost on me 😕 I think I spent so long fretting that my machine was the last in the line and what was I going to do when it really needed replacing that it's kind of tricked my brain into wanting to jump on this right away while it's still here, but it isn't going anywhere, probably not for at least 2-3 years yet... I will probably still end up upgrading anyway as I'd like my new one in place while my 2015 still has some life in it but it's certainly an extravagant treat lol! I'd really like HDR which sounds like a mini LED/ ~2021 thing, I probably could sit it out that long but I don't really want to... guess I might have to upgrade again in a couple of years though I'd like to see this last another comfortable 4 like my 2015 has. I'm also really interested to see what (if anything) Apple can/are do(ing) with ARM based laptops, I'm imagining some really sleek hardware. Decisions, decisions 😣

@Falhófnir

You started to hit on some of it there..

For me I'm ready for the next gen of screen technology, a much better webcam, perhaps even a full ARM move (who knows), more fleshing out of "WTF are they doing or not w/ the TouchBar", on and on.

No question - if one simply needs a new machine, go get a 16" today.

But - if you have something that is working great for you, particularly an older one where the big money is mostly a sunk cost and the keyboard component is not a risk/concern, there's good reason to simply stay put.

Even if buying a 16" - I'd honestly wait a few months while the initial manufacturing run gets bought through and most initial QC issues are fixed.

That's very well described.

Yep, I feel like just waiting for WWDC will give a lot of answers, given that's undoubtedly where the ARM transition will begin, if its happening (in the near term, anyway). By then we should also have the fully refreshed lineup and probably a set of more solid rumours about what is on the way in 2021 and/or what's happening with mini LED. Yeah definitely want to sit out the initial production run machines as there often seems to be a slightly higher chance of encountering issues.

My biggest qualm without a doubt is that if it's a bit of a waste of money (for me) to buy this computer over my 2015, its a major waste of money to buy yet another one ~2 years down the line if it appears with all the features I would really like to have o_O

That's good because it feels really confusing! 😄

As you said, letting the excitement settle down a bit, step back and what are we celebrating? A keyboard that works, an Escape key and improved speakers! And everything else is incremental.

I’ve got a nearly top 2015, but still rock my 2012 rMBP as daily driver.. don’t ask.
I’m jumping up to the 2016 now, base i7 with 32GB and 1TB. 6GB 5500..can’t wait. Hven’t been able to get used to ANY of the keyboards in between. I’m going to try and sell the 2015, which still has full AC on it.
