I can't imagine they'll release a screen that none of their current Macs could run. Would make absolutely no sense.

If the rumor referenced in MCAsan's earlier post holds true, then it might be, that only MBA owners will be in trouble. rMBP owners, who have 2 ThunderBolt 1 ports, might be able to use them in parallel!
That indeed sounds awesome. If only the GPU were up to the task. That needs to be checked, have it not in the head.

I was meaning with the display only supporting TB3. I imagine it will be TB2 dual port if it needs it.

5k is kind of pointless. It is not going to net you enough space to be able to work with 4k content on one screen. Besides, most folks in post will prefer to have one screen for just the program material and another display(s) for your FCP/Premiere/Video-Turbo-Pro timeline and tools.

Unless they do some neato firmware upgrade to turn our TB2 equiped Macs into TB3 Macs that can throw such bandwidth, this will be kind of a PITA monitor to field.

Not gonna lie, I've been holding out for an Apple branded display for my NMP since it came in. But I ain't waiting much longer.

I doubt a 5k Thunderbolt display is coming. Thunderbolt 2 doesn't have enough bandwidth to power a 5k display.

I strongly bet on it coming in a 5k iMac first. Maybe even this week.

I'm really excited for oct 16th mainly for the displays.
I'm afraid of the 5k / TB2 Data rate limit problems though. Just hope they'll come up with a two port solution instead of just giving us 4k at 24" or abandon the nMP users alltogether and come up with TB3.

If they come out with a new display that the L2013 Mac Pro (the one actually released in E2014) can't handle, I for one will be cheesed off. I think that might even be an understatement.

Why not a 5K iMac, and a 4K Thunderbolt display? I know, I know, too many panels in the production line. But still, the 5K could be driven by custom GPUs directly in the iMac, and the 4K would work with existing kit.

what is that supposed to mean?

I think he means I can buy a new new (L2014) Mac Pro to accessorize my 5K display?

I'd really like any new Apple displays to work with my less-than-one-year-old $8K Apple computer. Is that too much to ask?

It will only be in the top-end BTO iMac.
That things is already almost beyond "I don't care"-expensive even without a 4K display.
Will be interesting to see how the differentiation vs. the nMP works.

That is just so unlikely. They would probably not sell enough for it to be a worthwhile venture if the option was limited to cto. In the case of a 27" imac, it would be non-trivial to implement. The high res option worked cto for the macbook pro, because it would not have required a lot of extra work. These were available as semi-generic parts with a possibly adjusted backlight design to meet Apple's specifications. What you describe would be a complete failure in marketing. If anything it would be more like the retina macbook pro transition, where they debut another retail model with cto options, then sunset the old one as sales volume drops off.

Take a look at the displayport 1.2 spec. That represents the highest spec that is likely to be supported. Before someone mentions 1.3, that wasn't even finalized at the time Thunderbolt 2 hit. 1.2 had a long revision history, but it was released in 2009 or 2010. It didn't fully catch on until later.

The Apple online store is down!!

So they will be announcing something that is for sure.

Hoping for a new :apple: Display!

Please let there be a new display. I will go crazy if 27" retina iMacs are on show and they neglect the Thunderbolt Display. I didn't buy this nMP to work at an inferior resolution.

JEEEEEEEEEZ wt *** is wrong with them? Still no new display?

I bet it's coming but only next year when they bring the new new mac pro with TB3, one connector and the Retina imac's are no longer on short supply.

I'm sure it's down to yields on the panels and availability of the new controller for the new iMac. Once yields are good, a separate display will be coming.

Hmm if TB2 lacks the bandwidth then that's going to be the issue.

So, since we just saw two new macs with TB2 launched, the likelihood of a TB3 5k display before a Q2 MBP and nMP refresh that sports TB3 is unlikely.

I just wanted a 4K 24" display for my 2013 rMBP! Only the Mac Pro and the new iMac can drive 5K I think.

I'm bitterly disappointed!

Does a single ThunderBolt 2 channel even have the bandwidth to handle a 5K display at 60fps?

If it does not, that is probably your answer as to why Apple didn't announce it today (I guess they'll come up with some channel-bonding option to use two of the Mac Pro's TB2 ports).

I think you guys may be worried over nothing. They implemented close to the way I expected (Note my disagreement a couple lines up. I knew it wouldn't be cto, because that would mean no retina retail store models and a more complex ordering pattern).

This display has to run on the bandwidth of current protocols. The likelihood that they developed their own independent protocol for a special product to later be merged into existing ones once standards come up to date is well......... not very likely. It uses embedded graphics, but that does not mean it runs something other than displayport. The real question should be whether you can still push data with one of these hooked up rather than will it run. I also can't picture Apple using a 30hz refresh as a compromise.
