How much did you sell it for might I ask ? Same price as you bought it ? After 3 years ?

Sure Np. Here's what I did. Bought it on ebay in late 2008 (first mac) for $1000 with applecare. I got a good deal because it was right after the unibody's were introduced. Sold it this feb. (applecare for a few more months) for $925 (-ebay fee's etc, net 850ish). Bought a refurb 2009 unibody on cowboom for 909, happened to also have applecare.

I'll admit I got a little lucky, but this is the only way I can justify the expense of the mac. I still am not in the position to drop 2.5k on a new one.

I definitely prefer the look and feel of the unibody. One of my only gripes with my 2006 MBP is the pitting in the aluminum of the palmrest, and it looks like the plastic edge is shrinking and pulling away from the metal.

I had that problem a couple of weeks ago. The plastic part around the optical drive was so bent I could not enter any discs in it. Took it to the Apple Store and they repaired it in 5 minutes...

Good thing for resale price ! ;)

Maybe I'll get a MBA instead of a MBP is I apply your buying technique

Yup, got the 13" white and will be getting the 15" (soon, I hope!).

But I gotta say, the machine still works like a champ... will be passing it to the wife.

Yeah I look at macbooks all the time on ebay. You should be able to get a late 08 / 09 model (core 2 duo) 15 inch for under 1000 easily. The key is to not need it right away and refreshed by newest listed for buy it now's. That's how I seem to get the best deals.

I would say even if you find a nice core 2 duo unibody that doesn't have applecare for a good price, don't let it deter you. You can get a 1 year squaretrade warranty for 99, or two year for around 150. Granted that seems high, but if you find a crazy good deal on ebay you still have an option for warranty.

I plan on keeping this 09 unibody 2.66ghz core2duo until the mbp's are redesigned, then I will wait for the refurbs to show up on apple site and make my first real purchase from apple. :)

On a 2006 2.16Ghz MBP here. I was going to upgrade to the high-end 2011 15" MBP but I decided I'm going to buy a $900 Windows Box for gaming, then when lion comes out (hopefully with a refresh) get a 13" MBA for $1,300. That's 2 machines, 2 different purposes for the same price of a MBP.

The only thing that deters me from a 2011 MBP is gaming. Gaming on bootcamp creates so much heat that it kills my battery life. I've gone through 4 batteries in 4 years with this machine. And with a non-replaceable battery I would hate to be at 200 cycles and 74% battery health.

On my current battery I've had for 12 months I'm 310 cycles and 48% health.

I have an Early 2008 2.5Ghz Penryn, full spec below.

Hoping to skip the current design and pick up the Late 2011 when I'm in Uni.

I got a 2007 white macbook with apple care for cheap on craigslist. Going to Iraq and didn't want to bring my nice MBP

I'm still on my 2006 2.16 Core Duo ( not C2D :p ) 15'' Macbook Pro .. I was thinking of getting a new one this year, but I think that I can wait 'till next year ... Hopefully I 'll get a redesigned one in 2012:)

I'm still running on my late 08' SR MBP 2.5. No need to upgrade right now, as Xcode still runs like a dream and compiling is more hard drive reliant than CPU. However, now that I'm out of grad school and have a demanding job, my gaming rig at home is now a luxury due to time, and when you add travel into the equation, I need something to game on the go.

That being said, the 512 8600m GT is not going to be lasting much longer for current games, but I need something a little more radical than the unibody's. I've been working with these since the PowerBooks, and it's time for a good change in the shell. I'm not upgrading again until that happens, be it 2012 or 2022.

I just updated from my 15" C2D (3GB (4GB installed), 500GB Hitachi) to a 15" i7.

I am still using the C2D on a daily basis, however. It's been re-purposed as the server for the house, running iTunes and connected to my Drobo.

It'll be 5 years old in November. :)

I have the same machine. They're great. I just got a 2011 though so I could be more effective with Lightroom and Aperture. I didn't much consider a new machine until this last revision. I can only hope that the new one will give me the same great 5 years of service as the old Core Duo.

I have 2007 15", 2.2ghz, 4g ram Macbook pro. I was thinking about getting the new one but just got a SSD instead and will use it 1-2 years more.

My main work flow requires two firewire ports (400 & 800) and express card slot at the same.
Can the new ones do that?
Nope.

I recently(couple months ago) just bought an 08 in mint condition. 2.6Ghz Core Duo, 15 inch screen(non glossy). Got it for $500 from Craigslist, took a while to talk the guy down as he tried to sell it at $850.

The only difference was the seller upgraded it to 4GB RAM and a 200GB at 7200 RPM.

So far I couldn't be happier. I played around with the latest mac pros and don't see any difference in everyday normal usage. Of course things like video/audio editing would obviously run faster on the latest MBPs.

I also like the non-unibody aluminum design much better, but the unibody design feels more portable.

I might try to upgrade it to 8gb Ram, as I've heard others were successful in doing so.

I'll probably upgrade to the latest MBP in late 2012 or early 2013.

Just upgraded from 2006 Core Duo BlackBook to an 2011 13" i5. It was a good 6 years.

still rocking a blackbook from 2008. Works great still. Doing video conversions at night most of the time and over a month of uptime at a time. I love this thing. I do want to get a SSD for it soon, but need to do a little drive management for it first. Slim down and such as its my field photography computer.

edit: and I just read that this can read up to 6GB of ram in a 4GB/2GB config. That makes me extra happy. It was excellent to go to 4GB but 6GB would be so awesome!!

Have a 2007 2.4 15", doing well but definitely feeling a bit long in the tooth for some of my development tasks. I put in a 500 GB hard disk and a new battery recently so it's far from over the hill but the new 15" machines look pretty sweet (other than the high ends freezing).

Also with each new refresh I'm expecting the value to keep dropping. Right now I can get about $850 for my machine which might be enough to pick up the low end 15" SB. The battery life and processing power are going to be ridiculous I expect.
