I cannot speak for myself, as pre-uMBP I owned only Macbooks. But I know my friend had many issues with his classic MBP. >< He couldn't even run flash player.

What if I told you guys it was a brand new, never opened, factory sealed machine?

And what if I told you they want $1900 for it?

I'd laugh in their face! That's practically the same price as a brand new current model mid-range 15" with faster CPU, more HD space, twice the RAM and RAM capacity, twice the battery life, and the dual video cards and SD slot.

I wouldn't pay more than $1300 for it, and that's only if it was the very last top-of-the-line model. If they've had it and never opened it, that means the battery has never been cycled and is likely shot. Also, the warranty is expired and the machine is no longer eligible for AppleCare. That's a pretty big risk for a computer with a potentially faulty GPU, a fault that only shows after use over time.

Heck, I'd trade my MBP straight-up for an Air. Which model do you have? :D

My Early 2008 MBP 17 is running fine, though seeing 77C GPU temps while just doing regular work in Fusion is a bit scary.

Late 2007 15" MBP.

Sees daily use and still going strong (with some help from AppleCare). No problem with the video issue (so far).

Have had two battery replacements under AppleCare. I don't know what the issue is with the batteries in these MBPs, but I've had two fail rather precipitously after about 11 months of use.

I plan to pick up a newer model sometime this year. Will wait for Arrandale. Hopeful to get USB3.0, a good graphics chip and maybe even a later, less power-thirsty Arrandale rev. We'll see what Apple comes out with...

That's pretty much what I said, and $1300 is exactly what I was thinking--assuming it has a warranty, which I'm thinking it won't since they are not an authorized reseller so as far as Apple is concerned, it's no different than if I bought a computer and held onto it and thus the warranty is expired...however he is looking that up so for now I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, then have him pass the serial my way to verify. I also figured the same about the battery.

I have the crappy Rev B 1.6/120 HD with the 4200 RPM drive, woohooo. I wouldn't be up for trades though, I only like buying new computers:)

running mbp 1,1
1.83 ghz Core Duo
2gb DDR2 Ram

Runs GREAT for being a outdated model
occasional slows downs are normal, but nothing im not able to handle

i will definitely update if the next update for the umbp is a great one because its simply time to update

but this computer has lasted me for eons and still works like a charm, only had to replace the battery so i could use it longer when not connected to a outlet

My MBP went on the FED EX truck today, hoping for a free fix and trouble free experience.

wow i was really lucky then... my SR 07 was perfect except for my battery needing replacement. My logic board was replaced but im not sure if it really had a problem but best buy did it any way. Lot's and lot's of HEAT infact that's why BB replaced mine.

I have a September 2008 2.4GHz MBP with the 8600 GT and upgraded 250GB hard drive. . Neither the graphics card nor the battery have ever caused me any issues. I use my computer every day and bring it back and forth to university and I do not have a single dent on it.
Overall, I am very pleased with the computer. The only thing I would change is an increase to 4GB of RAM. I should have done it this summer when prices fell to ~$45. Now they are $100 and up.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the computer continues to work perfectly.

My Early 2008 MBP is still going strong too after 2 years. I played games on it everyday and did a ton of 3D work in Maya, stressing the GPU up to 86C for hours everyday. I've had the WiFi card and battery replaced though.

On a side note, a couple of my classmates with 8600s died on them awhile ago. They bought the BenQ S41 and Acer 5920G at the same time I did.

I don't live with my siblings, but from what I understand, both of their non-unibody 15" machines (2.4 and 2.2) have no problems with their 8600s.

Yup, the Early 2008 MBP in my sig is still working just peachy. Of course, you never know how long it will last, but I can't complain so far.

Early 2008 here (bought in 8/08) and no issues so far but I'd be tempted to buy the "new" 13" MBP and put an SSD in it as my "netbook."

Mine JUST conked out a coupe weeks ago. Repaired for free and with speed, of course, but still. Ironically I'm hoping for some new models tomorrow (and was planning on jumping on the next update long before it died).

One of a few in the stable and it's still running strong ( 15" 2.4 Ghz model upgraded to 4GB RAM last year) and my favorite MBP of all time. I have a feeling it will officially become my wife's tomorrow. :D For what it's worth I used to play WoW and COD like mad on it and the original 8600 is still chugging (hell it still play's WoW very well).

What would you guys pay for a new, sealed-in-box 2.4/2/200 2008 system?

EDIT: Quote me two prices, one with a one-year warranty still intact and eligible for AppleCare purchasing, and one without any warranty at all.

TIA.

What would you guys pay for a new, sealed-in-box 2.4/2/200 2008 system?

Be careful about " new in box". My friend is a record collector and won't buy anything still in the shrink wrap. Once it had the wrong record in it and another time the record was so slightly warped that it just wouldn't play without skipping.

Moral of the story, you don't know what you are getting for sure. If they are a store then you might be a lot safer.

Good luck.

What would you guys pay for a new, sealed-in-box 2.4/2/200 2008 system?

These guys say $1350-1550, which still seems high considering that you can EASILY get the current model for only about $100 more.

If you're absolutely bent on getting this system, I'd start negotiations with the guy at around $1000 in the hopes of landing somewhere around $1200, but quite honestly you should be able to find a better deal on a better machine practically anywhere else. $1900 is a complete joke; it sounds like he hasn't kept up with the times and still wants to recoup a good chunk of his investment.

Also, I'd wait another week or so to see if this rumored refresh actually materializes...that has to be worth at least a couple hundred dollars more off the price.

And to contribute further: my 17" Penryn (the 4/320 non-unibody model released at the same time as the 15" unibody models) is still going strong, but I've only had it for about a year...fingers crossed!

Edit: is this from a private seller or a dealer? I'm not too down with the details, but wouldn't the warranty start from your purchase if it were from an authorized dealer? If it's from a private seller and the warranty is over, then this is an even worse deal for you. And like others said, the battery probably isn't in great shape at this point either.

And if you're really buying this just for the design, you may as well pick up an old PowerBook G4 for a couple hundred bucks instead ;)

Thanks, other opinions welcome as well.

It's from a photography/image company, but they are not an authorized reseller which effectively makes them the same as a private seller, if I'm not mistaken...i.e. the warranty is expired since it's not any different than if you or I bought a laptop new and sat on it for a while and sold it later after the warranty had expired. Again though, waiting to hear back from him.

Oops, my apologies...I see that you did mention in an earlier post that it wasn't an authorized dealer. Did they just buy a bunch of machines for their business and then end up not using this one? That would explain why they wanted $1900...they probably paid $2000 and think they've giving you a great deal (or at least hope YOU think that ;)).

I have a pre-unibody but it's a Radeon X1600. Still works great.

Ditto, just had to replace the battery once, but it's been going strong for almost four years now. I might get a new one with this refresh, however.
