Yeah, it is pretty much the same attitude (although it isn't similar in picture quality difference). True-tone has become the new market differentiator.... as is evident by the existence of this thread, that because True-tone was introduced, all screens without it are now suddenly noticeably inferior.
I met in attitude...of course I know they are not the same.
Lol, I actually have that attitude towards non-retina displays. For my specific target use case (reading ebooks and b&w Japanese manga), lack of retina was a big deal. Fine print that was clearly legible on printed books and graphic novels (varying from 4-7" diagonal) were not readable on the 9.7" iPad without zooming which I found very annoying. Retina is a major component that smoothed the way of my switch from paper to digital.

I actually had 2x iPad 2s (one primary, one backup) but they would go unused for months at a time due to the low pixel density (incidentally, that's how I learned how amazing screen off/standby battery life is on iPads). I preferred reading ebooks on my iPhone 4 despite its 3.5" screen because of the clearer text. Of course, when the iPad 3 came out, I immediately replaced both iPad 2s. As maligned as the iPad 3s are, on the criteria of $/hr used, the 3 definitely provided better value than the 2 to me. :p

i admittedly haven't ever seen the new smaller one with the improved screen, but I love my 12.9. It is about as fast as my 2015 MacBook Pro with retina.

I have both sizes of the iPad Pro and they are BOTH outstanding. Pick the size you want and I am betting you will be happy. If not you got 14 days to decide.

I have crappy eyesight, and the I thought the MacBook Air's display was fine, so I'm probably not the most qualified to answer, but no, I don't regret not having true tone or the enhanced gamut of the 9.7.

I'm very glad my iPad Pro is paid for by work not by me. That way these things don't bug me. I'd have probably liked a 9.7 pro over the 12.9.

I would take four gigs of RAM and a faster CPU over true tone display any day and I don't use my camera enough to need the 12 megapixel rear and the five megapixel front I love my 12.9 inch iPad Pro 128 GB cellular model

I love mine. I second-guessed myself early on and wound up ordering a 9.7, but returned it to ATT without even opening it because I had already started using the 12.9 and I LOVED it!!

Within the first month of the release of the 9.7 inch model I thought maybe I could sell my 12.9 and upgrade to the 9.7 but I went to Apple and tried it out it's just another iPad it's smaller the smart keyboard is smaller almost claustrophobic and if I tried to use the desktop keyboard it would feel weird with the 12.9 inch smart keyboard it's not claustrophobic it just feels natural I love my big screen and I love drawing on it when I do unless you plan on taking video or pictures of a high quality than the 12.9 inch model in my opinion is the best we all know the next 12.9 inch model will have the up-to-date cameras and screen and I probably won't even update then I am paying for mine over the next two years as of December 2 so come December 2017 I will see what's out there

Exactly.
The 12.9" display makes split screen multitasking like using two normal iPads at the same time. You'd have to pry it out of my cold, dead hands.

Normally I have the web taking up 3/4 of the screen and 1/4 of the screen is iMessage or Facebook messenger and TV or Netflix in PiP somewhere on the screen

The burn in is not even a issue especially in current amoled screns unless you are on full brightness for more than a full day......who actually uses full brightness except when necessary in direct sunlight??? I have never had any burn in screens from Samsung in past few years.

I do - when I'm working with colors (drawing, photo editing) I find that it's best to work with full brightness. Any color modification to the screen can affect what I'm doing.

In a couple of years you will be wishing you had 4Gb of RAM instead of a True Tone/wide gamut display.

I doubt it. 5 years - maybe.

Oct 2016 marks 2 years that 2GB RAM iPads have been out in the market. I think that it'll take far less than 5 more years, more likely 2 years, before the RAM difference will have a significant impact.

I guess that depends on what you would call "significant impact". Developers still develop for devices with far less than 2 GB RAM. Unless there's some sort of big shake up, i can't imagine 2 GB of RAM being an issue in 2 years, even assuming there's a refresh next year where everything gets the 4 GB treatment.

It's not necessarily apps needing to make use of more than 2GB, but on the 4GB iPP, apps moved to the background stay suspended for longer before being flushed. Makes switching back and forth between multiple apps fast.

That, and when running two "big" apps side by side, there's no lag.

I would happily have both & a pen.

However one BIG reason people like myself have to be very cautious and take time is because the EURO prices are huge compared to the DOLLAR prices.

For example, base models only as quoted on Apple site:

Pro - 9.7"
€699 (xe $778) - Apple US $599, so that's $179 more to buy outside of the US.

Pro - 12.9"
€939 (xe $1045) - Apple US $799, so that $246 more to buy outside of the US.

You guys all think they're milking you, but it's mainly us poor dopes outside of the USD pay an even higher premium and now that exchange rates are in play with Apple adjusting to hold onto profit, it only gets worse.

It might also be claimed that warranty protection is far superior form at a statutory legal level outside the US (generally soaking across the EU) and therfore Apple have costed this into the sale price. I'm not sure but I guess they have worked out the real cost. Often Applecare is not as useful for anyone buying in a country with a good warranty regime compared to those in the US.

It is most likely an average consumer would not get as good as the rates quoted on xe.com, as these may only reflect interbank rates.

From reading the forum also it seems there are often great deals with even lower prices that we coudl only dream of, form your native big Box sellers. You simply don't see that outside the US afaict.

Rates in this example xe.com /
1 EUR = 1.11390 USD 1 USD = 0.897750 EUR

All it takes is multitasking two apps or more to make that RAM an issue. It will get there soon.

FWIW, the upgraded screen (True Tone + lower reflectivity) and the camera (forgive me) were the main reasons I went for the 9.7" instead of the 12.9". I absolutely love True Tone as most of what I do on the iPad is reading. Seems like a small feature, but the display is significantly better than the Air 2 in my eyes.

That being said, in the future I might change to the 12.9" when it gets the improved display.

For indoor use and non reading tasks the I wouldn't notice any huge difference between the two screens. Major issue with the screen is not an issue of the screen itself but that so many apps that are not optimized. I will go for the 9.7 model now and go for the 12.9 pro 2 model when it comes later this year or early next year (most likely next year).

As far as apps not being optimized, I have found that a lot of them have been. Among the apps that I use a lot, only Facebook hasn't. I just use their website. Same with a lot of the other apps.

Also, over time non-optimized apps really don't bother me as much as dealing with a 9.7" screen for all the other apps and side-by-side stuff I do. Each to his own.

I can't live without the extra RAM either. This thing never slows down.

Facebook has the native res of the pro, right? Just not using the extra pixels in a good way?

Going from the 12.9 to the 9.7, I haven't noticed much of a difference. They're both fantastic displays.
