As I said in an earlier post.
The Aussie prices include GST the US prices do not.
$1USD=$1.4AUD

Without GST your price is $A1908=$1372USD.
Price in US $1299USD
Difference $73USD.

Nothing to get excited about.

We still end up paying a lot more though in the end.

It's the same with us across the ditch in New Zealand :(
And I was so keen to buy a new one, but with a huge increase in price, I'd rather wait for the 2nd revision at least

you americans just dont get it!!!
its not about the conversion rate at all
its about the fact that the old mid rage macbook was 1799 and now it is 2099
the old top end macbook was 2099 and now it is 2549
wtf i would like to see how yous americanos would like to get a farkin 300 - 450 dollar price increase for your macbooks.
it is not our fault that america is in the *******
and neither do we miraculously earn more money to pay for the price increases because of america!
this is not fair and these prices should come down as soon as they are well and able too
i aint gonna spend $3000 on low end macbook computer!, maybe a macbook pro but not a macbook and 2100 for a 2.0 ghz macbook is ridiculous

^^^Whinge whinge whinge. I couldn't even read your bloody post.

Please tell people you're from France or something.

Actually I think it has to do with the current exchange rate.

People here won't listen to something they don't want to hear, which is reality.

Take the Australian price for the MB ($2099), convert the currency to US dollar ($1350.18), and divide by 1.1 to account for the GST included in the price ($1227.44). The same laptop sells for $1299 in America.

Seems like we're getting a better deal than Americans today.

No matter how you think about it, the price difference isn't big at the moment.

You make me feel sad to be Australian.

Ditto.

Same with people in other countries who are complaining about the price.

The only one with a valid complaint are Americans, and they're getting what is essentially a MBP in a small form factor. After all, the biggest factor separating the two machines was the graphics capabilities, and now that the MB can handle more than a game of Solitaire, they should be thrilled, really.

Also, DisplayPort. With that plug, you're set for years!

Dog-Dude and coloured-writingy-sig guy, what the bad-english-speaking guy was trying to express was that yes, the exchange-rate accounts for the increased price, but when yesterday it cost me 1799 for a Macbook, and today it costs me 2099, i didn't get a magical pay increase overnight to afford the increase.

Which makes it frustrating because the computing platform many of us prefer is no longer within most of our reach.:(:(:(:(

I just want to cry...:(

exactly that..

was going to buy a mb for my gf for xmas but now it's hundreds more for what i think is an uglier product, with minor real world performance advantages, I could have bought a digital camera for that extra money.

^^^They're not unfair though. They're justified. The only alternative is for Apple to sell them at a loss just because a few people want something they can't afford.

I don't like price hikes either, as all this means is that buying power has decreased. However, I can see why it's happening, and I know you can't cry to Apple simply because the Australian dollar has dropped in value.

Then get one from the refurb store. Some have never been taken out of the box. It's just Apple's way of getting rid of old stock.

That, or just get the white plastic model you were willing to get her just recently.

yes it sucks!!! my dell inspiron 8600 is seriously about to go into cardiac arrest and second and not to mention the size of a small car so my dad has agreed on getting a me macbook for xmas. he nearly passed out when he saw the new prices. i feel so bad :(

lol, yes i can see how it is justified, but since when has a low end notebook cost sooooo much to be out of reach for most people. I stil can't name one person i know that has spent more than $1700 on a computer.
I honestly don't think apple is gonna go to well with these notebooks in Australia.

I wanted to get a MacBook Pro, but with over $3000 as the starting point there's no way in hell that will happen. Guess it's the entry level aluminum MacBook for me (I'm not fond of the white one).

Wanna hear something?

Dell's Mini 9, a netbook, began selling last month at $599 AUD. With the recent dip of the Australian dollar, the item is now stated as "Sold Out Until Further Notice" (I paraphrased). No price is listed now. I think that the reason Dell took it off their website isn't only because of stock. A big reason is because they can't price it at $599 because the profit margins of a netbook is VERY low, and the 25% decrease in the Aussie dollar means that every one of them was sold at a huge loss.

I bet that when they start selling them online again, they'll be priced at $750 rather than $600. They wanted to stop sales for a month or 2 so that they could bring them back later at a higher price, hoping that nobody would notice. ;)

Geez, this is terrible. I won't start rambling on the price, and why it is that but now I don't think i'll be able to get a MBP (i'm definitely not getting a MB)....

It was a real shock finding out the price: i'd just watched the keynote thinking 'Great!, I'll get the new MBP'.... When I checked the apple website to see if the price was the same I got a real shock.... $3199!

Pricewise, they were just in reach before the refresh, but now out of reach. Yes, I know that the $AU has gone down, but a price increase like this is a bit unexpected. :(

Unfortunately true.... :(

Apple have really shot themselves in the foot with these prices, they obviously think that people are happy to pay any Apple tax at all.

Macbooks were a ripoff even at the old pricing, this is downright ridiculous and I wouldn't consider buying one.

dude it's a $73 difference between the US and Australian store. That means we got hit with a price increase as well. $A350 increase =$250USD.
Australian didn't get screwed worse than US. UK is who really got screwed.

what do you mean you got hit with a price increase?
to my knowledge the price for the us one stayed the same didn't it?

Yeah, but while the Aussie prices aren't as bad as you think when you consider the value of the Aussie dollar at the moment, the change in value of the GBP doesn't account for the change in MB/MBP prices in the UK store. In other words, the UK are getting screwed.

On the other hand, Canadians are paying around US $1200 for the low end Alu MacBook, which is $99 cheaper than the $1299 price in America. :p

Since I'm Canadian, I guess I'll be taking full advantage of this once I move back to Canada.

That was my initial thought as well, I was surprised how the entry level MBP went from $2599 (which was very good value) to $3199. $700 price jump really isn't justified here...

I really do think we are paying for a new case and not much else.

what's the point of parting my cash for something that's already inferior.
like you said, the buying power has decreased, and the reason for that is the australian dollar.

but like myself and many previous members have expressed...
AUD$2099 for the metal Macbook is doable, but seriously, that's still hundreds more for a similar product spec wise for a laptop.
$3200 for a MBP is simply unacceptable.
