you play blu-rays? as in blu-ray mkv files?
yup blu-ray mkv, sorry if i made your heart miss a beat or something (i know how excited i would be if i found out macs could play BDs hahaha.
you play blu-rays? as in blu-ray mkv files?
that would be perfect!! i use my original CD MBP with no problems on my HDTV at 1920x1080 (mind you it is a DVI port). i use it for blu-ray playback, its amazing![]()
Ahah, awesome to hear that, blu-ray MKVs would be the same use here.
As long as it doens't give me any weird cropped screens or not-as-it-should-be screens as this Toshiba I have right now running WinXP + VGA cable, I'm happy.
I also said HDMI because I haven't got a TV with DVI input, does it really give better quality or is it just the same thing as HDMI screen? (Would get a Minidisplay-HDMI, not Minidisplay-DVI-HDMI).
Also (I'm sorry if this is a bit threadjacking OP, just curious) do people find any problems using HDMI because the TV should pick it up as audio+video, or is that no problem once you plug in the sound? Also something that has made me curious...
I have crystal clear dot by dot clarity on a 32" 1080p Sharp Aquos (even for text) however, I need to attach a retarded and bulky DVI to HDMI converter on one side and even more retarded audio cables on the other side of my macbook pro. A high definition LCD has become one of the most fundamental peripherals to laptop owners. DOES ANYONE STILL CARE ABOUT VGA? Seriously, apple, get it together, I'm willing to sac 2 of my 3 USB2 ports for an HDMI port. I refuse to upgrade until HDMI is implemented. If they take too long, fukit, I'm switching to Ubuntu on a custom system.

Or you can do like me and get a real sound system which would need another cable anyway![]()
HDMI 1.3 and above is what is used on real sound systems. There are no reasons to add a tos link to split audio/video.
That I can give a maybe to. But still only a maybe... I think that a stumbling block for having that on a notebook is that it is really only useful for 1 thing, external storage, and the MacBook Pro already has 4 ports for that (2 USB, 1 FW400, 1FW800), plus the expresscard34 slot which can allow you to hook up even more.
On a system like the MacBook Pro, where thin is in, and every millimeter of space counts, I would imagine that adding an eSATA port would be a fairly tough decision. You have to weigh the advantages against the added circuitry inside, and the space you'd have to find outside. Also, you can get an expresscard34 card that will give you 2 eSATA ports for only $60 or so. Which is more or less a drop in the bucket when you consider the MacBook Pro retails for $2000
I can't but strongly disagree... how can you compare a USB to an eSata port!!!!!!! it may be allright to transfer the PhotoBooth dog photos, but if we are talking about 20Gb video files.... Add to this the brilliant Apple engineering with all USB ports shared, the low current output capabilities, ...
FW800 is better, but still not enough... besides the firewire bus will be clogged, and probably demanding chained devices won't work full power when doing massive data transfers, as FW800 also shares bus with the FW400 connector.
ExpressCard is the only option, but mind that
(i) you would have to buy an ExpressCard to eSata, and it is a pity, for Mac has ALREADY Sata in the logic board and it would be a matter of just putting the external port, IMHO
(ii) Apple has decided to remove ExpressCard support from the latest MacBookPro's ( Pro? really?) but the 17" and substituted it with a lame Smart Card reader - that's internally attached to the USB bus, though clogging even more the USB lanes.
So .... please apple.... go Pro again...
So wait, u really cant wait those what, 7 min to transfer 20 Gb of video files to ur external drive? I can hardly see a situation where you are in such a hurry to backup the data![]()
I think that ExpressCard expansion on the side is a waste. HDMI, eSATA, more USB ports would be a better choice. Or Apple should have gone the other extreme and only have ExpressCard expansion and you have to buy what ports and things to plug into the ExpressCard slot.
Personally, I don't really see the point in having HDMI. You get an HDCP compliant DVI port, and you have the ability to hook up Composite, SVideo, VGA, DVI and HDMI. I do not know if HDMI has the same versatility.
I put HDMI on the same level as a built in card reader or fingerprint reader, they are nice, and people like them, but frankly I fail to see the point in most instances.

Why would I need another cable if I had an HDMI port? My LCD has audio out, which is connected to a Marshall amp.
I wouldn't wanna use a digital surround system for music, rather a good 2.0 analog, meaning I need an external DAC that get's the sound either through the optical output on the Mac, or USB.
So do you store your music in .wav format? Would there be any point to having analog/optical out if the music files are stored in a digital container like .mp3
Yeah. As long as you don't have a reciever (i.e. use digital inputs on your reciever and uses the built in DAC there), the soundcard will be used as a DAC. And on a laptop that sucks, then an external DAC really makes a difference. Even on my old speakers (20 years old) you hear a big difference when running the USB DAC and just running the 3.5mm outlet.
