search google for digital audio cable, and get the hdmi mini port adaptor. I use an hdmi 25" monitor and connect my 13" unibody to 47" lcd at work for conference meetings when I present, sound goes from audio out to digital audio in on the tv, hdmi picture out and into the screen. Got both cables for less than 20 bucks Should be one of the first options that show up on google shopping link

Can you give me an example of the product you are referring to, preferably via linking to a product page on newegg. Thanks

I use this: http://www.audioadvisor.com/prodinfo.asp?number=MFVDAC

Not ordered from that story though, since I live in Sweden. It is considered to be one of the best in that price category too. I compared it to 2.000 USD DACs and it could put up a fight against them, it lost ofc but it wasn't by a mile.

Hello,

I have Pioneer 507-XD TV and I want to connect it with my macbook pro. I have a Mini DisplayPort and I have already a HDMI Cable. What connector do I need to see 720p quality on my television from my notebook?

Mini displayport to DVI ? and DVI to hdmi and then with the hdmi cable to the TV?

Thanks a lot!

something like this would be perfect for you :D does sound and all :D

And it will work perfect? Anyone got already something like this?
It's nice it can send sound also to the televison. :)

How do you get sound from the TV? Mini port>DVI>HDMI plugs into HDMI port on HDTV. Switch to that port on your TV and it is expecting sound to be there too. If you hook up audio via 8mm to composite cable and plug it into a the composite input on the TV, it will not register. TV is looking for sound on the HDMI input. Who knows a work around? External audio is the only thing I can think of.

MacPro 15 and Panasonic 42" plasma equipment.

i have a panasonic tv (LCD though). i plug the HDMI cable into the side of the TV, and then use a 3.5mm->RCA (red and white audio cables) and plug them into the side of the TV too. i then select HDMI3 and that uses both video and audio.

my gf has a plasma panasonic tv and i could never get hdmi+audio working - i have to use external speakers for hers.

No, apple won't want to lose the money they make off of all their adapters that everyone gets nickel and dimed by.

This is the real sad truth. While I can somewhat agree that it's more versatile having DisplayPort for projectors, monitors, etc. However, Apple's prices for these basic adapters are ridiculous!

I remember back when I bought my first Mac (12" PowerBook G4) it came with both a DVI and AGP adapter FREE. Seems like with each new product they skimp on something new.

Saying a HDMI is too big for the slim MBP is a little exagerated. A HDMI port is about the same size as a USB port. Idealy the best case scenario is if Apple came with a Mini port that included digital sound out and from there, you could use a Mini port to HDMI and actually get sound (Not adding another physical port to the MBP and maintaining sales of their mini adapters)
Some things that would definitely improve the MBP is a esata port, HDMI, BD, and USB3.0"when available. <- This one could replace the FW800.
I currently have a macbook and am using optical & HDMI but I can definitely agree that it's very inconvenient. If and when MBP comes out with at least HDMI (In any ways) and BD, this would definitely makes me consider buying a new macbook, esata would be a nice addition. USB 3.0 I'm sure mac will add those once it comes out.

Like someone said, why have an extra input (esata) when you rarely do mass data transfer and waiting is no big deal... Well isn't it what technology is all about, making things faster, better?

I for sure don't like having to constantly connect a DVI & digital sound everytime I like to watch a video on my big screen.

for the price of the Mac book pro 17" it should have an HDMI out ! very frustrating

A bit of an old thread but the time until now have given us an update with Apple finally added sound to the mini-displayport. With this solution they still sell their pricey adapters to us (adapters which you carry with you and forget everywhere) but it is a little bit better than before.
