The Dell 5K monitor is supported by the 2013 nMP and the latest 5K iMac since 10.10.3.

There are people on this forum that have confirmed the 2013 nMP can drive the 5K Dell display (same panel as the 5K iMac) using two cables.

Some displays with resolutions higher than 4K require two DisplayPort cables to connect the display at full resolution. With OS X Yosemite v10.10.3 or later, the Dell UP2715K 27-inch 5K display is supported on the following Mac computers:
Mac Pro (Late 2013)
iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014)

----------

Which means there is no existing base of Macs ready to support an external 5k monitor with one cable . Maybe at WWDC we we will see new MBP, Mac Pro with TB3 and support for a 5k ATD.

I do not know of any computer that can support a 5K monitor with one cable.

I do not know of any computer that can support a 5K monitor with one cable.

Which is what is needed for general use and acceptance. So lets hope for TB3 in lots of Macs being announced at WWDC. And if that happens, just maybe there will be a 5K ATD. But we hoped for a 4K ATD....and so far that has not happened.

I'm new to Apple, so my predictions may not be accurate.
- Retina is a pixel density. So a 4k Retina display would only be 24". 5k Retina is 27". And 8K Retina is 32 or 34".
- Apple did not add 5k support to Yosemite 10.10.3 to be benevolent and let high end customers use one of the only two 5k displays currently available - Dell P2715k and HP Z27q. Apple must have done it because a release of a 5k Retina TD is imminent. It would be easy; remove the back of a iMac 5k Retina and add a back with a couple of DP connectors.
- Mac Rumors discussed the LG leak of an 8k display in the Fall. So maybe and update to both MP with DP1.3 or DP1.4 Thunderbolt and a 8k TD in the Fall.

DP1.4a, which was previously reported by MR, is for embedded displays - all in ones or laptops. I also have not heard of any details on release date; seems like it is very far off. Most likely scenario would be DP1.3 being added to macs this Summer/Fall, allowing for a 5k display.

"Most likely scenario would be DP1.3 being added to macs this Summer/Fall, allowing for a 5k display."

Yosemite 10.10.3 already allows for 5k display with two cables. Same way Windows does it.

My suspicion is that there will be two ATDs coming out. A USB-C "normal version", probably 24" with a 4K panel and a 27" 5K "pro" version with TB3.

The normal version will have just one USB-C cable to connect to the Macbook and the pro version will have one TB3 cable to connect to the MBP (and MBA, if it still exists). There might be a concession to existing iMac/nMP owners to be able to use this two, with two cables. I think that Apple has been waiting for TB3, which will allow 5K resolutions and power over one cable.

If Apple is going to release a 5k display, they will want to market it as elegantly as possible, which would be a one cable solution. The 10.10.3 update, allowing 5k with 2 cables is to not completely alienate the existing user base who have purchased relatively new machines.

My rMBP can do 4K over TB2. So I would very happy to plug that into a 5K ATD and do 4K until such time as I can afford to replace the rMBP with one that does 5K over TB3. :D

There is really no point in waiting for an Apple 4K/5K/whatever-resolution display. Although most other displays are not milled for aluminium, they are still great.
Few months ago, I bought the new Dell U2715H display (27", 1440p). I looks great in my opinion, even though it's plastic it's very well made, and the image quality is phenomenal! IMO Apple displays are not worth the price, but they definitely are great monitors.
If you're planning on getting a 4K/5K monitor, just buy one, and don't wait for Apple to make one. :)

There are only two 5k monitors that I know of: Dell UP2715k and HP Z27q. Neither Dell nor HP likely have any interest in providing technical support to Macs. Dell sometimes does say "works with Macs" for some monitors, so maybe Dell is changing although the users manuals don't contain the word "Mac". I'd bet my MacPro that neither Dell nor HP has tried these monitors with Yosemite 10.10.3 on a MacPro, nor do they intend to do so.

Apple Support does address some old 4k monitors and how to set them up. There are so many 4k monitors now, Apple Support won't be able to keep up. I can't find any Apple Support for 5k monitors. So I could buy one, but I'm on my own for now.

As a current ATD owner, I want a 4k/5k ATD with integrated dock. I don't have a separate dock and a seperate monitor plus have to use my external power supply for the rMBP. The last thing I want is more cables on the desktop.

Not to stray too off topic. I have no place around me with a 1440p monitor on display. I want to see how much more space you get moving from 1080p to 1440p.

Could someone with a 1440p display post a screenshot of their desktop with a blank Word document open or a text edit window open? I want to compare the space and size of UI elements.

I appreciate it.

Sorry to bother you, but I see you have a 1440p thunderbolt display in your signature. Could you be able to post the screenshot I mention above?

- Sure.
Does that cover what you wanted to know?

Wow, that's perfect. Thanks!

That's a lot of space. 1080p seems puny now,

- Yes, it's glorious. 78 % larger than 1080p.

Here's a 1080p (full 1920x1080, not cropped) video running in its original size:

one thing to point out is while the imac is 5K thats only with a special adapter.

while you can drive a lot of displays i dont think any can run at 60hz on a mac apart from the imac's one.

Ps apple dont make the imac display it's a Samsung i think (or LG?) and you can buy the display in a case as an external display (and i think ATI made the imac adapter.)

5K at 60 Hz is supported by the nMP and the riMac

Hi,

Has anyone tried the LG 31MU97 31 ?

I've looked and read. there are some very good & also
some bad reports about that screen.

I know, it's not a 5k but would appreciate your advice.

tks

Thanks,

I'll read up on it and from what you say, there's quite a bit
of background on this. Got it today. Installed "Shades" to
quickly work around the brightness issue with two monitors.

But damn, that's a nice monitor so far.

Are you running two of the LG-31MU97-B monitors from the nMP(6)? Any problems so far?

No, running this alongside an Apple Led cinema display on a 2009 Mac pro
with Radeon HD7950. That is a sweet screen. Unfortunately it got dinged in transport so I'll have so get a new one from the insurance company.

right side of screen has a column about an inch wide that's kaput.
