Here's why I don't like CL for anything but furniture, vehicles, & other stuff too big to ship. Too much hassle. This is the one that actually BOUGHT the phone, plus the hassle from the scammers & so forth that contact you but never buy.

You netted, what, $100 more than you would have from just clicking a few buttons on a web site and printing a shipping label? Plus you ended up giving your home address to some complete stranger, which would have been a deal-breaker for me.

The sites were offering $150, so I netted $150 of after-tax dollars, which ain't bad. But your point is well taken. It's a hassle and a risk, and not necessarily worth it.

Last month I listed my iPhone 4 twice. Why twice? because the first winner didn't pay after he won and he even asked for a reduced amount, which I entertained by asking what price he's asking. Anyway, he never responded but of course I still got charge all the usual fees by eBay, the winnings percentage fees (pretty significant) and listing fees. All for an unpaid item. I hounded the guy with no success. eBay could only do something after 5 days. Surprisingly, I didn't have any luck with the second hand winners or third, so t opened an unpaid case, which they confirmed within a day. They gave me a refund for all my costs. I then decided to list again but lower price and shipping ($15) and only have it for one day. It actually showed a lot more action than my previous auction. Bidding went well, surpassed by reserve price.

The winner had at least 75 good feedbacks, which is a great thing. I checked the contact of those feedbacks and he's an honest guy. Made me happy. He sent me money via Paypal and paypal attaches the delivery address. The money won't be available to you instantly if you don't have a certain number of feedback. The quickest way it'll be available is when PayPal confirms the delivery to their confirmed address. Just took 3 days for me.

I'm actually considering it again since I'm about to get another 4S. It's always a gamble with eBay, but usually its in your favor. You're completely protected. Just list that phone will be sold AS IS. No questions, comments, nagging after payment has cleared. You're good to go. Thats what I did.

Sold my black 32GB iPhone 4 about 5 weeks ago through Craigslist for $350. Got lowball offers from lots of bottom feeders and a few scam e-mails as well but all you need is one good offer. Had to list it several times to get full asking price but was well worth it for me as I met seller at B&N and received full payment in cash. Safe, clean transaction. Would rather go through a little hassle than face risks/fees associated with Ebay/Paypal transactions for sellers.

I wish some shipping company would offer a service at their retail locations to verify package contents for shipping. I show up to Staples or somewhere, show them the phone is in good working order and give it to them to package and ship it. In exchange for a fee (insurance), they provide verification of this to eBay in case the recipient claims they got a brick in the box instead of their phone. This could prevent a lot of eBay headaches for sellers I think.
