i am not a mathematician.
but i like your way of thinking...

n=8-p
b=√(2017-a)
x=n+b

if x = ≥10 then buy iPhone 10
if x = <10 then buy iPhone 8

variables
n= newness value of your current phone vs base model of the newly announced phones (8)
p= your current iPhone model number (iPhone 5 =5; iPhone 7=7)
b= buzz factor value
a= your current age

* i also dont remember my PEMDAS very well...

I'm convinced OP is a learning bot of some sort (although it's horrible at learning so far). No one in their right mind could make such odd threads.

LOL. Agreed. I read through a lot of the OPs threads yesterday just for giggles. Bizarre indeed.

OP = starts thread, disappears.

I am here! What makes you think I would disappear... ;)
I was looking for mathy stuff, and not all of them are mathy... some of the posts are just... very funny.
Looking for more good responses :)

I was thinking that someone really just wants to start of bunch of threads and throws every idea out there no matter what kind of word vomit it actually is.

And most of them aren't even worth opening.

The problem is not everyone in the community may be math oriented, those that are seem to be posting logical methods like decision trees, weighting, and other techniques clearly are. Though it would be cool it have some way to have some mathematical framework to calculate this sort of thing. It's subjective, and based on user preference, yes... but it's math! There are always ways to better model this.

19 bucks says she stops posting altogether

Sounds like you gotta pay up to ET3SW :p

I’m new around here but OP seems to start a lot of random threads. Who cares. Buy both phones.

But what you're asking for isn't making any sense. You're stating that the community is basing their decisions on logic, and you want yours to be based on math... what?

The only way to "mathematically" decide which iPhone to buy is in regards to price. Money you currently have - the cost of iPhone 8/X = leftover money. Then decide.

What else could you possibly be asking for? A calculator where you can enter your age, weight, height, favorite number, and it maths your ideal iPhone out? You haven't clarified.

Please don't feed it.

There is no problem with logic! Math is another way to help you decide. You can plug numbers into excel spreadsheets and subjectively assign numeric values and weights to things you care about.

A lot of things in life can be modeled using math.

Welcome Stang69!!! I am only buying one phone. It would be nice if the X came out not in another month-plus-a-few-days... I think it drives everyone to overthink... what else is there to do...

the attachment on the Decision Trees: has wide applicability in machine learning and automated analysis. thanks, it was interesting to read through it.

If you need math to figure out what to buy, sounds like you don't really need a new phone in the first place.

macrumors has a section called "Buyer's Guide".
it makes an informed recommendation for the prospective buyer of apple hardware.
it is based solely on the number of months since last update, implying if a newer, updated model is due or not.
quantifying things that help you make an informed decision is being done all the time by you, me, everyone.
