I'm with you on the imitation meat front - I can't stand it.

what is tival? never had it

i am a frequent eater of imitation meat. part of it is just that it makes meals easier, because that is how we are trained to have meals (meat, a couple veggies, etc). some of it is gross, some of it isn't. i'm a fan of morningstar farms products, some gardenburger stuff, and some boca stuff. the tofurkey type things are a little scarier and don't taste as good

my mom makes awesome chicken pot pie and stroganoff, and we found that the imitation chicken/beef strips work really well in them. mmmmm makes me hungry

just watch out you dont eat too much soya, it has allot of estrogen in it, unless you want some man boobs.

I think i am going to go home and eat lots and lots of bacon:) , if we weren't meant to eat it why is it so tasty:confused:

Something that really pisses me off are people who eat fish (or better still chicken) and claim to be vegetarian.

Yeah, it always bugs me when people says "I'm a vegetarian....but I eat chicken.....and fish....". I'd prefer if they just said "I don't eat red meat" :p

Kind of like people who say they love OS X but install Windows on their Intel Macs.

I was considering trying the vegetarian lifestyle, but then I noticed these canines and incisors in my mouth, and that whole omnivore thing kicked back in.

I respect those who lead vegetarian and vegan lifestyles. It just isn't for me. However, my meat intake has been cut back considerably recently as part of an attempt to eat in a more healthy fashion. I don't personally consider meat (by meat, I mean flesh of any sort, including fish) to necessarily be unhealthy, but it often ends up that way (hamburgers, etc.).

I have no ethical quarrel with eating meat, fish, poultry, cheese, eggs. etc. Eating those things is perfectly natural. I do, however, have ethical issues with the way most animals are raised and slaughtered.

The canines and incisors things is bull****. Human teeth are very different than true canine teeth which happen to be long and pointed. Many vegetarian mammals such as gorillas (which happen to be a primate, our closest relative) have the same canine teeth as us. Rabbits are another example, check out rabbit teeth and see for yourself. Or perhaps rabbits are supposed to eat steak as well. But don't take my word for it, do some research for yourself.

One question about the vegan lifestyle that I never found the answer to was "if veganism is a natural choice, how did people get enough B12 back in-the-day"?

It's pretty much impossible to get enough of this important vitamin naturally, so I (and all of vegans I know) take a supplement (or get it in a food that has it added), which makes me think that being vegan before supplements were around might not have been a very healthy lifestyle.

It was a joke. Mostly.

Regardless, humans are omnivorous creatures, so I don't buy ethical arguments that we should be vegetarian because it's wrong to eat meat.

I do respect personal decisions to avoid consumption of animal products, however.

Here are some quotes on that. Since people have been on a diet of meat for so long it's hard to say how different things were "back in the day" as you say.

"It seeems likely that in our original 'natural' state, eating rain-washed fruits, roots and berries in the primeval forest, human beings would have developed or absorbed the necessary intestinal flora to synthesize the tiny amounts needed and have had the capacity to absorb them directly from the gut without needing to take them in through the mouth."

Wakemann, Alan and Gordon Baskerville. The Vegan Cookbook, London/Boston: Faber & Faber, 1986, p.271.
"All primates consume insects and dirt, either deliberately or accidentally, and this provides an important source of B12 missing in hygienic plant-based diets."

Walsh, Dr Stepen. 'Maximising Long Term Health on a Vegetarian Diet' in New Vegetarian and Natural Health, Winter 2003, p.18-19.

guys and girls and men and woman

YOU ARE NOT A VEGETARIEN IF YOU EAT FLESH!

that counts for mammals marsupials birds and fish and every other sort of flesh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

anyway back on topic

i am a vegetarien and i find it quite enjoyable

my reasons for being one is
1: moral reasons

2: not eating meat is almost like voting for better animal quality of life.(did you know that when pigs come out of their tiny cage their legs actually break becuase they are fed almost nothing and have to drink their own urine)

3: meat dosen't taste good!!!!!!!

still sometimes when my father is having a hot dog i look at it with longing but go ghh ghgh no! i am a vegetarien

4: even if i try to eat meat my body actually rejects it, if i mangage to swallow i puke if i try and take a bite i twitch and my mouth jumps backwards

goodbye!!!!
for the next minute

I really like meat. Even if I had a cause to defend...say protecting my body or the animals, I wouldn't be able to justify denying myself the enjoyment of eating meat.

When I can, I eat way-too-expensive organic, locally small-farm raised meat, so the health issue isn't quite as big, either.

As far as 'vegetarian meat' goes, being the stuff made from soy...that's dumb as hell. If you're going to give up meat, f***ing give it up.

As far as lactose-intolerance goes (kind of interesting stuff):

Lactose is milk sugar. Lactose is broken down into other sugars that the body can use by an enzyme (think of enzymes as tiny little blenders in your intestines) called 'Lactase'.

Mammals are born with Lactase in their digestive systems, to digest their mothers' milk. As they grow up, they don't need to digest the lactose any longer, so the production of lactase ceases, rendering them 'lactose-intolerant'.

Most asians, a great majority of blacks, and people from some other parts of the world are lactose intolerant.

There are only small subsets of people who are genetically different, and continue to produce lactase throughout their lives. People from Europe (especially northern europe), the Middle East and India tend to continue producing lactase.

If you're not descended from any of those regions, there's a good chance you don't produce lactase.

Anyway, I find it really cool. :D

edit: just found two articles on wikipedia that talk about this: (lactose) (lactose intolerance)

I usually only eat the soy meat out of convenience. It's easier to throw a boca burger into the microwave than to actually make something.

I didn't just replace real meat with fake meat. I usually don't eat that much of it.

it's so fracking expensive!!

oh.. but this week is the 2-year anniversary of becoming a vegetarian. Hooorraayy! Totally gonna go to hunan village tomorrow. :)

Um, some people actually like it. Some actually can't eat a lot of meat for health reasons, or just don't want to eat meat but miss the taste. Plus it can have a ton of protein. I for one can't stand stuff like Tofu, but my Sister swears by it. To each their own.
