Hi MacRumors team,

It's happened a couple times now that I see a post on the MacRumors home page forum ribbon that looks interesting, then click into it only to realize it's posted by someone I've added to my ignore list. Is there any way for the site to filter those out? It knows I'm logged in, it should be a fairly simple check.

Thank you!

ok. we can do this... but a few caveats:

Present behavior:

- If you do tap into a thread where you ignored the thread starter, they are already removed from view when u visit the thread. The thread remains (though perhaps slightly confusing because you don't see the original post). This doesn't seem like that bad an outcome, though I understand it's also confusing because the same threads probably aren't visible in /trending in the forums.

Potential behavior:

- Logged in users who aren't paid contributors. The front page is cached. So, we can filter out ignored, but only after the page has loaded. There will be a moment before the ignored threads are removed. so you might see the original threads for a second before they are filtered out.

- Logged in users who are paid contributors. They get a freshly rendered page (for other filtering/customization reasons), so in this case, the filtering happens before the page gets to them. So they would see as expected from the get go.

My only question is if everyone wants to see those threads disappear for ignored thread-starters? Or just not see the first post, but able to see the rest of the thread -- which is current behavior.

Some users irritate other users to the point that they don’t want to see them or interact with them.
Constructive counter-proposal: then stop interacting with them. It reminds me of that age-old story about the locked toilets.

I'm fine with it either way.

I don't feel like I do a LOT of ignores, but if I see someone behaving particularly extreme in some way I'll probably mark them for it. I have... well, it doesn't give a total but looks like around 40-50 people ignored right now.

Not familiar with the "age-old story" - is it "Stop pooping"? 🤔
I apologize for the confusion. I didn't mean what you assumed, but rather that back then there were people who, for fun, locked the school toilets from the outside. I think it's totally childish and silly.

This would be my personal vote. If I've ignored an original poster in a thread I'm not going to be able to participate very productively in the thread anyway, and will be missing context from other people's replies that I could only get by viewing ignored content, defeating the purpose of putting them on ignore in the first place.

Putting them on the ignore list is to stop interacting with them 🙂

Personally, i find some people annoying (as other find me annoying) and I'd rather not see their posts. Yes, I scroll past them but not seeing anything from them is largely a QOL improvement that I embrace.

Edit: it also removes the temptation to respond, i can see someone responding to one of my posts that seems so outlandish that I absolutely need to reply to "set the record straight" and all of sudden, I'm sucked back into interacting with someone who I don't want too. We all have the desire to have the last word in on an argument, its human nature, so ignoring certain members removes the temptation and the need to keep reposting when it serves no positive purpose.

(I’m going to take my own advice here as I’ve been guilty of this)

At work we informally have the “two” rule. If it takes more than two back and forths to answer a question or make a point understand, pick up and call.

If a point isn’t clarified into two sets of back and forth a it almost never gets clarified so drop out of the race. You’ll be less exasperated.
