Native Apple apps like Mail, Messages, etc. And quite a few others that have updated to use iOS 7 APIs, like even Twitter and Facebook, for example.

The real question is why did they remove the option to make the back and forward buttons disappear into full screen browsing??

Almost all first-party Apple apps and many more from the App Store. For example:
  • Kik
  • WhatsApp
  • TagsForLikes
  • Instagram

I was aware of the swipe back working in those apps. Like I said, from what I've tried swipe forward only works in Safari, and the obvious photos app (while viewing a photo).

So you know about other apps where it works, or didn't know?

You are just unable to use it in other apps other than Safari for some reason?

I know that swipe back works in multiple apps. Swipe forward works in 2 that I know of.

I see what you mean. As far as swipe forward, what apps would that be useful in and make rational sense?

For example, in a browser, forward works going forward in history to a page you were on when you went back to another previous page. But in various other apps, like Mail, once you read a message and swipe to go back to the folder what would forward be expected to do, go back to the message you were on before? It seems that the dynamic for forward is somewhat different thank back and limits its application to expected user experience.

I second that, swipe forward only works in Safari and photos. The jailbreak tweak used to have swipe forward in every app now it doesn't at all anymore than the stock feature. Very annoying, I really wish someone had told me all of these tweaks didn't work before I switched out my phone.

Where would you use swipe forward and for what sort of things?

It is extremely useful in MULTIPLE apps, including mail. If you are in a certain message and swipe back, then after you scroll back up to the top you suddenly forget something in it that you need to reference you could swipe forward and be right back in it rather than scroll all the way down and try to find that message which many times I forget.

I guess something like that can be useful in some less usual situations like that. It seems like forward is really meant more for navigation type of reasons, where it's not as directly applicable in a lot of contexts beyond more linear ones like a browser. Probably an equally important reason behind it is that it would likely interfere with a lot of the swipe to delete functionality in various apps like Mail and Messages for example where swiping right to left reveals delete options.

I see what you're saying with the linear aspect but it's so much more useful than just for Safari which already has a back/forward function (which worked better before but still exists). I rarely used it in Safari and still hardly do.

Most of these uses involve similar situations which are wayyyy more common than you think.

Much like Mail, in Messages it allows you to jump back to the conversation you were in instantly after scrolling back up (or down).

In social media apps like Twitter, same concept, you scroll back up and forget which tweet/profile you were on and swipe forward to instantly be back at it. It worked absolutely brilliantly and was DEFINITELY not just a "less usual" situation tweak. I used it all day every day. You don't know until you use it. I feel handicapped now without it.

Well, tweaking aside perhaps, no one ever had swipe to go forward functionality, so not having it introduced doesn't take anything away from iOS, and with the use of swipe left to delete or reveal more options, it certainly stays away from creating conflict/confusion.

Perhaps it's a feature to consider for Apple to add, which would require changing the existing pieces of user experience (like swipe to delete), assuming it seems it would make sense and be useful often enough for enough people.

Of course you can't. If you want customization on an ios product, forget it. :apple: knows best and if you don't like it, you're wrongggggg.

One of them that I use on a regular basis would be Notes. It used to have arrow keys for going back and forth between notes (while one was being viewed). Now, that's gone, and you can only swipe back, view the list, and click the note. Repeat the process.

Mail could also use this feature, even though it has the Up Down key while viewing an email. I wouldn't expect the forward feature to be there while you were viewing all the emails listed for the account, since if you swipe one direction you go back, the other direction you're presented with the More/Trash.

For things like going though a collection of items, like emails or something like that, similar to photos for example, yeah, I can see that being useful. Sort of more like "previous/next" type of functionality than "back/forward". I guess they would still have to clear up when a left to right swipe would be previous vs. back (like going to a previous message vs. going back to the list of messages).

Off topic, but I don't understand your signature...

User 3bs posted it. I thought it was hilarious because whatsapp took forever to update the app to look like the rest of iOS 7, and he was waiting for them to do that, but his iPhone 5s got stolen so he didn't have to wait anymore because he didn't have a phone to use whatsapp on. No offense to 3bs, I understand it's terrible to have your phone stolen, I just think it's funny, so I made it my signature. I couldn't quote the post directly in my signature so I just put 3bs:(insert quote here)
