Just upgraded from iphone 7 (home button) to iphone 12. This going back to home screen swiping up from the bottom with the case is really annoying, even the white bar that floats around there is annoying. Is there any new gestures or better way of doing this?

And whats with the swipe up to open the screen? I thought we dropped the touchID so we don't have to touch the screen because FaceID is faster. Now we have FaceID AND touch the screen to unlock the phone?

Besides back tap, just practice; the swipe doesn't have to come all the way from the over-the-edge bottom, so you don't have to start the swipe on the case.

You NEED to swipe up because with FaceID, text messages in the Lock Screen are hidden until you look at it...a great privacy feature! So, you can now read text messages (meant for your eyes only) without having to enter Home Screen.

IF unlock goes automatically to Home Screen with FaceID, then you won’t be able to read the text messages in Lock Screen and thus have to go into iMessage app to read them.

In contrast, with TouchID, text messages etc. can be read by everyone and anyone who holds your phone. FaceID prevents that.

I'm not sure what made you think this but no. It's 2021 not 2221. It's still a touch screen so pretty much anything you want to do on the phone requires you to touch it. You can use Siri to make calls and play music but for more advanced things like using apps or browsing the web we're still stuck with touching a screen. Even with texts I find Siri doesn't do a good job beyond simple texts like On My Way or OK. At least for me where FaceID is superior is reliability. TouchID will fail if anything is on your finger or it's just not perfect on the sensor. FaceID works unless something is covering your face. Yes I know masks but this wasn't an issue when it came out.

You will find that FaceID is far more fluid and invisible than TouchID (exception being that we wear masks these days). When you enter a website that needs login info, FaceID automatically comes on and you enter the password-protected website instantly. No need to touch anything. All automatic. It is kinda wizardry from Apple the way it integrates into everything.

Used to imagine Face ID will take more steps to unlock: tap to wake the screen, wait for it to scan our face, and swiping up.
But turns out there‘s raise to wake the screen and scanning face is very instant. I’m happy with Face ID (except when using face mask, and I don’t want an Apple Watch to work with the upcoming iOS 14.5).

Swiping virtual home button on the other hand, is what I have been anticipating since long ago. Coming from iPhone 6 to 12 Mini, the swiping experience has been so fun! Swiping up to go home, swiping sides to go previous apps, swiping up and hold to go to app switcher and swiping down for reachability. Don’t wanna go back to home button, requires a bit more effort to actually press a physical button.

I don't use iMessages, and I rather the phone instantly opens up. When I used touchID as I picked up the phone my thumb was on the home button, by the time I am facing the phone its operational.

Now I have to pick it up, wait for faceID to unlock, then proceed to swipe up.

I meant to unlock the phone with touchID you had to press the home button and it unlocks, with FaceID its 3 step process .

1-raise to wake
2-FaceID unlocks
3-swipe up

I am going to guess this works only if you use Apple's keychain. I use 1password.

I would use the on screen home button from accessibility settings if that’s your thing. I only recently started using a FaceID iPhone and for me personally I was impressed how quickly the new gestures felt like second nature.

The reason you have to swipe up on the Home Screen is to stop the iPhone opening every time you glance at it. You’d never be able to read notifications on it if it opened each time. I will say I think TouchID was more reliable overall and often slightly quicker. I’ve gotten used to FaceID now though.

Not sure what you mean, but I have lower my expectations when it comes to OLED display. It has some ups and downs. More less same experience I had with my older Samsung device.

If it’s the size that you meant, it’s essentially the same size as iPhone 6,7,8,SE2 for me. Just longer and a hair bit narrower.

Just upgraded from '84 (manual) Volvo to Tesla Model S. This moving forward by just pressing the accelerator is really annoying, even the foot rest next to the brake is annoying. Is there any better way to drive it?

And whats with all the screens in the car? I thought we have iphones and ipads so we don't have to touch the screens in the car. Now we have to touch screens of our iphones/ipad AND of our cars?

Just so you know, you don't have to wait for Face ID. You can swipe up right away. If you somehow swipe up before Face ID recognizes you, your phone will go to the home screen once Face ID scans and unlocks. That being said, Face ID is so fast now that swiping and unlocking are practically simultaneous.

So you're expecting the phone to be constantly scanning for a face when it is locked and the screen is off? That would be an incredible battery drain. It takes literally seconds to tap the screen and swipe up.

Seriously. Face ID is so good I forgot my phone is locked sometimes. You couldn't pay me to go back to TouchID.

Feels like I am back in 2017. The complaint about swiping up to get to the Home Screen was beaten to death when the X was released. Curious, given your recent threads, are you out of your 14 day return window? Sounds like the SE would suit you much better.

That is incorrect. You can have the same privacy setting whether Face ID or Touch ID.

You keep saying Touch ID but I’m pretty sure you mean Face ID 🤔

Why not using a sort of double tap instead of swiping up?
I like FaceID more than TouchID, however swiping up doesnt make any sense, i find it less practical, more fatiguing because swiping up from the bottom of screen to the mid/top of screen, more distance with one gesture!
I am sure Apple could implement a sort of double tap in order to return on homescreen
