Seriously, I thought people prefer FaceID because people picked the phone which auto scans their face and unlocks. If you have to pick it up then swipe up, how is this better than a touchID? In both cases you are touching the screen. I do get though that it enables and all screen phone.
I think it depends on how you use the phone. For me, the starting point is the notification screen. So, with my touch id phones I would press the side-button to get to the notification screen, and then interact with notifications, but then you have to first unlock. With face id you can pick up the phone and directly interact with notifications.

But if you starting point is the home screen, then it's less of an advantage. Apple could solve it by having an option to go directly to the home screen after unlocking, rather than the lock screen.

And whats with the swipe up to open the screen? I thought we dropped the touchID so we don't have to touch the screen because FaceID is faster

Don’t let anyone mock you, because you are absolutely correct. FaceID allows the device to both know that you are looking at the screen, as well as verify that you are the proper person. At that point, the screen should just unlock so that the device is immediately usable.

Recall that the entire point of the Lock Screen was to ensure that the user didn’t start butt dialing if the lock button was accidentally pressed in a pocket/bag. FaceID can already confirm that the interaction is not accidental, so the Lock Screen is redundant.

The only reasonable objection is that that notifications would not be visible on screen. However, this merely demonstrates how outdated and simplistic the design of the home screen is on iOS. The correct solution would be properly redesign the home screen and have the device unlock immediately, rather than relying on a hijacked “lock screen” for a screen that does not need to be locked. It’s pretty sad that a trillion dollar company can’t manage to find a solution.

So how do you check notifications on the lock screen without the phone opening every time you look at it?! The phone would be constantly unlocking which would be highly annoying.

Google has this setting on the pixel 4 to bypass the Lock Screen and it was really annoying to have it fully lock when checking the time or seeing who texted me. Turned it off.

How does the phone get locked then? Had to lock the phone manually?

Just upgraded from iphone 7 (home button) to iphone 12. This going back to home screen swiping up from the bottom with the case is really annoying, even the white bar that floats around there is annoying. Is there any new gestures or better way of doing this?

Just sell your phone and get a current iphone SE. It's a powerful phone. You'll be happier with the phone and life.

As I alluded to in my first post, if they change nothing else then you would have to swipe down for the Notification Center.

However, I’m sure if you think about it for a bit that you could come up with a better solution. Particularly so if you’re a trillion dollar company whose motto is “think different”, you come up with an innovative idea at some point in the last 13 years.

As I think about this more, maybe Apple could add an option that would not require a swipe up if there are no notifications. So you would not need to swipe up after Face ID unlocks the phone.

That would be annoying. I want it to go to the last used app not Home.
Fine. I was just pointing out that it would be possible to reduce the steps to unlock the phone without always needing to swipe up after a Face ID unlock.

If you have to swipe down for notifications then it’s better just to leave it as a swipe up to open the device and leave them on the lock screen. I wouldn’t want my phone opening every time I look at the bleeding thing.

The innovative thing about the lock screen currently is that the notifications are private until the phone scans your face. What we already have is pretty good.

The gestures on the X onwards are very fluid compared to that archaic button. It took me a day to get used to it, and it took my near 60 year old tech clueless dad a few hours. I would say I find the gesture/face ID combination a lot more fast and natural. If you're still having problems maybe its time to accept the phone isn't for you and to trade it in for an SE?

I specifically have problem with swipe down for Reachability (bring screen down) and side swiping to go through opened apps. Either nothing happens or I get spotlight.

I just experimented more and noticed that it works only on the first 3 icons in the dock from my left. The 4th icon(closest to my thumb) won't register the swipes. Probably designed this way.

I see. Its because I don't use notifications on locked screen. I don't like the non-stop stream distracting my attention. When I am ready to check the messages I can go directly to the said app.

A simple software configuration can do this, we don't have to choose between either or for all customers. There are many customizations options already.

IMO the phone should only unlock when I pick it up and look at it straight at the screen which should be the command for "unlock". Yes it will be irritating if your phone on the table and every time you look at it , it unlocks.

Well there is no harm in giving that feedback to Apple.

I have a question for you. What do you do once your phone unlocks to the home screen? What is the next action you perform?

click the app icon I intended to use when I unlocked it. Phone, Twitter, email..etc.

That’s the point I’m getting at. Whether you are swiping up to go out of the app or unlocking the iPhone, a small swipe up means your finger is prone then for the next action. It’s actually more fluid than reaching to the bottom of the device to press a button. As you need to use your finger for the next action, it’s already there.
