Handbrake issues

Just use handbrake you won't ever need anything else.......

The main problem with handbrake is that it is not working on a lot of the newer DVDs I have quite a few not work, and it does not seam that it is being supported... There has not been an update to it in a long time.

It is a great program but windows still has better tools around for free, I don't have to spend money on them, however the mac encodes videos much faster when it works.

I don't want to "pirate" any movies, but would like to rip DVD's that I bought into my computer so I can put them on my iPod.

Are there ways to rip copy protected DVD's with many chapters/episodes etc?

Which software allows me to do it? Is it legal?

Since you asked, and no one else answered, I'll answer the legality question for you: for some bizarre reason, under the current Digital Millenium Copyright Act (DMCA) it is specifically not legal (in the US at least) to rip copy-protected DVDs, even ones you have legally purchased, and even if the ripped version is solely for your own use and you don't "share" it with anyone or infringe the copyright in any other way. Crazy, huh?

The good news is that if you do rip your own DVDs there is essentially zero chance that anyone (from a legal perspective) will know or care as long as you don't make yourself conspicuous somehow, like sharing the files on line or something.

There will undoubtedly be people here that will argue that it's "fair use" and is ok to do because they personally feel like it should be fair, but unfortunately that's not the structure of the current law (the DMCA and the existing legal definitions of Fair Use). The laws regarding copy-protected (and copyrighted) DVDs are not the same as those for CDs, which is why software such as iTunes facilitates ripping CDs but not DVDs, in order to align with existing law. Luckily, now that personal digital media players are pervasive, people are challenging the existing law and hopefully it will change soon, in favor of the consumer.

I am a lawyer and here in Australia it is legal because u have "terms of use". And as long as u are handing it out to yr mates you are good.

Did this change? Maybe you're lucky and since that was enacted Aussie law has changed, but I'd be curious how they'd preserve the intent of the trade agreement. Another interesting article.

In my experience most people in this country (the US) don't understand what this legislation is all about, and default to their personal opinions what should constitute "fair use" (as it's defined under US law), but they don't realize that as the consumer they don't get to set the standard (for fair use). I wonder if it's as misunderstood in Australia as it is here. Here, people will argue and argue that what they want to be true is true, without regard, seemingly, for reality. I find it pretty interesting, and it's probably why I responded to the OP's question in the first place.

Handbrake is updated constantly. It just hasn't have an official release in a while. The nightly builds are quite stable. For newer DVD's, update VLC.

I will try one of the nightly builds, but they should really release a public build that everyone can download, I know that they are some non-tech people that are having these problems and would love to have some of the updates.

Because the people copying protected DVDs are using copies that they bought. I rip copies of my movies so I can watch them on my computer when I fly. I don't have to take my movie with me and damage the DVD in transit.
The copying also works for parents, who make copies for road trips and keep the original safe.
People using installous have never bought the program and never will buy the program.
why does everyone freak out about installous on this website but not illegally copying protected dvds?

I've been using cu cu soft. Its just to easy!!

The forum would not let me make cu cu soft one word, weird

I use C#C# soft myself and it works great. I am ripping the Beatles' Yellow Submarine cartoon directly for my iPod touch as I am typing this. I also Any Video Converter which will convert video for just about any portable player you have. You get what you pay for.:)

I don't know what problems you are having with handbreak. I been using it even on my newer dvds. But I am on a mac.... So if you any one is on a windows computer that could be an issue as to I don't know what the build is and what compatibility it has. sorry :(

I have MacTheRipper 4, but generally use Handbrake. I'm still using the last public version of 64-bit Handbrake (0.9.4?) and the outdated 64-bit VLC. I have never, ever had it fail on the newest, most difficult DVDs from the likes of Disney. You just have to figure out what title you want and use Open Source (Title Specific). I'll leave you to those that are interested to figure out that procedure based on guides in the Handbrake Wiki.
