On the other hand though, Amazon purchases are taxed in many states now, whereas B&H purchases are taxed only in NY. For that reason, B&H is my primary source for photo/technology equipment.

Mine too. I usually buy on BillMeLater since I don't want to enter my credit card number whenever I buy stuff online, and do so at B&H. I have never had a single problem from them.

Before buying anything online, always check out the reseller by looking them up at resellerratings.com.
+1! Excellent advice

B&H has been around for more that 30 years. I've been buying from them mail order for almost that long. They are ultra-reliable...generally recognized as the best and safest online camera reseller in the USA. I've bought tens of thousands of dollars worth of camera equipment from them, as well as virtually every Mac computer I've bought in the last 5 years (4 MacBook Pros, 2 Mac Pros, 2 30" ACDs). You cannot go wrong with them.
Thank you, and everyone else in this thread who took the time to comment. One aside: our holiday schedule is always available here, and almost every holiday is also trumpeted across every page on our site both before and during to make sure everyone is aware. Thanks to @luminosity for jumping on this before I could get here.

I'll just wait for my free $250 gift card then... I think I've filled out enough post-purchase surveys in my time!

I love B&H and Adorama.

My latest camera, Nikon D80, is from B&H- mainly because of the terrific added insurance coverage.

I take pictures of hundreds of waterfalls, and my last camera fell into one. B&H's protection warranty is the best in the business.

I would recommend Adorama as well. Adoramapix is where I get all my photos developed, and they really are amazing in that regard.

Lol you should ask who HASN'T bought from BH.

They are very reputable and I bough thousands of dollars of gear from them. Pictureline.com is another good one and usually is a bit cheaper then BH.

I will say though if prices are a big drop below BH or Pictureline, or Calumet, be wary.

B&H is reputable. Im sure others dont mind it, but B&H is way too crowded.

I still prefer to spend my moola at Adorama. Smaller more one on one customer service. the prices have always been identical or better. The one time i noticed a price difference, it was matched without question

Both are good stores, and B&H is a huge place.

Most of us will never know how crowded the store is - but I note seedster2 lives in NYC. FWIW I don't think the website is too crowded. :p
Thanks. Good points. FWIW the retail store can be crowded on Friday afternoon before we close and Sundays and the day after we reopen from a Jewish holiday. But on an average Tuesday morning, there's plenty of room and plenty of sales associates to chat with.

I've been to the store in New York. Yes it is crowded, but it is a well planned out. There is a definitive flow and you can hardly get off track even if you tried.

Funny, I never go to Adorama for the same reason - too cramped! (and also in a Bermuda triangle of subway stops)

However, I always visit adorama.com before I buy anything.

I have spent many thousands of dollars with both companies (B/H and Adorama). Generally speaking, the only reason I go with one or the other is it always seems only one of them are offering Free Shipping on the products I happen to be looking at.

Although, I can attest that Adorama's brands are generally much better than B&H's "low price" products (I am unsure if B&H actually rebrands anything). And their Flashpoint monolights are a serious steal at the prices they charge, very sturdy.

I just bought my third lens from Adorama. It's a 24/2.8, which means my 24-70 will be adios very soon. That'll be a nice bit of change back, I hope.

We buy everything we can from B+H, and have for years. I have purchased quite a lot of gear over the years at our district, and never one problem. Tech and sales dept. are first rate, prices are always good. I even got my personal Sony LCD TV from them.

I've never been to Adorama, but I have been shopping at both Adorama and B&H since I came to the USA more than 30 years ago. I have never had any sort of problem with either of them. Most pros worldwide tend to favor B&H because of their enormous stock and usually when they need something, they had to have it by yesterday.

I did get a chance to go to B&H back in December 2000. I was greatly impressed not only by the enormous size of the store - not to mention how busy they were too, as it was a Sunday - but how efficiently it's run.

The main reason for my visit was that they were the only convenient store that had virtually EVERY high end binoculars in stock and available for demo, so comparisons were quick and easy. It's also worth mentioning that as busy as they were, there was zero pressure on me to hurry up while I made the comparisons.

Lastly, it's worth noting that these 2 stores are incredibly busy, so the sales people will be happy to give you demo equipment to look at (or try out), but they just don't have too much time to help you make a decision. It's best to have some idea of what you want before going in there, so that you don't waste either their time or your own.

I've bought a few things from Adorama and while I did have a slight problem once, it was taken care of in the end and I have been back since. Always received my stuff in a fast time frame and the packaging was in really good shape. In the future I'd buy from either depending upon price, availability and most importantly, condition if buying used.

B&H is a great site. Fast shipping and great prices. I bought my prime lens brand new for a good deal. They occasionally shut their website down for odd reasons at odd times, though.

It's not occasionally. It's every single week, and the odd reason is called the Sabbath.
:)

Im looking into buying a camera but Im a little scared to spend a huge amount of money on a website Ive never used or heard of before.

Can anyone tell me if B & H Photo is a reputable company? Am I safe to buy a camera from them?

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/

I have dealt with them over the years and they have been reputable.
Visiting their store in NYC is another experience altogether.
I would order online.

Very Safe and Reputable Company

I use B+H regularly. I just bought a Nikkor 24mm 1.4 lens from them for no small amount of money. There were no problems with this expensive purchase nor with any other purchases I have made there.

Go ahead and order your camera you will not have any problems.

Cheers

Get the printed catalogs!

I have bought from them from time to time and they have always been great. If I were in NY I would love to visit their B&M store.

BTW, once you order and are on their mailing, they may send you their catalog(s), If not ask for it(them). They have always had amazing printed catalogs. Make sure you get both the Pro Photo and the Pro A/V catalog.

Thought I would throw that out there, hope the self-designated topic cops don't take offense.

Thank you. FWIW, our current catalog is online here. You can see our genre-specific SourceBooks, request a catalog by mail or subscribe/unsubscribe to our print mailings here.

Let me go ahead and point out why you shouldn't buy camera equipment from anyone else online other than B&H or Adorama.

I wanted a new p&s so googled and came across a place with a great price. Says it's in stock and will ship today. I order it. Two days later still not shipped, I get an email that I need to verify my CC and to call them. I call up, do the verification and at that point he puts on the hard sell for a bunch of crap (over priced batteries, SD cards, etc...). I say no to all and politely ask to just ship my camera. Later that day I check my order and now the camera is out of stock and will not ship anytime soon. I call back, argue a bit and then cancel my order. Apparently this tactic is very common for online camera sellers.

Ever since my above ordeal I have only dealt with B&H and they have been great.

There are loads of other great online retailers. It's not that hard to check up on them. Small business deserves yours.

I agree and would do that, but camera equipment seems to be one of those items where you get a lot of shadiness. I have a couple photog friends who have had the same issues with buying from places they just come across on the internet. One is to the point now where he only purchases from a local place in town. He pays a lot more, but was tired of the online hassle. So, in the end he is supporting a small business :)

BTW, I've built computers for years and bought parts from wherever offered a good price on pricewatch and never had an issues. Cameras just seem to be a different beast though, or there are just more scammers out there now.
