Core M is a dealbreaker for me - same performance in geek bench as an iPad air 2 - right? (Hopefully I'm wrong with that stat)

iMHO the new Dell XPS 13 looks very tempting. 13 inch retina display in a 11 inch chassis. Al casing. 13 hour battery life. Large glass trackpad. Free upgrade to windows 10. Plus windows seems to play nicer with my network and nas set-up. I'll give it a few months but Apple really have to step up with the existing air line. If they come out with something similar with the new air 13 I'll be all over it, otherwise I could well switch.

Keep in mind that those PCs don't exactly meet the cooling needs that Intel demonstrated with their reference core m tablet way back in early 2014. The cinebench 11.5 score on that tablets is 2.65 which is on par with the mid 2014 MBA per notebookcheck website. Stupid ultracrapbooks/OEM windoze crap tablets making the core m far slower than what it can actually do. Just research about the Intel reference tablets on the internet and you'll see they don't throttle under extended benchmarks such as geekbench and cinebench

These rumors are coming from multiple sources and are just as good as any except you have choosen to be offended.

Just take a deep breath and relax. This is all just for fun and I mean you no harm. Some like to turn everything into an argument!:)

I would not really call an artists render a rumour unless it's based on leaked information.

I do agree that a new macbook air with 1 usb port would suck, It will suck harder if it is 1 USB/charging port. I could live with only usb 3.1 C ports, as long as there are 2 and a separate magsafe port. If it also has an SD card reader I think I will retire my 2012 11" macbook air.

For me I would like to see Broadwell-U processors with Intel HD6000, and at least 8GB RAM as a BTO option. If I'm going to be tempted to upgrade it's got to be impressive. Personally I don't think Core-M is the right processor for mainstream laptops. It would be a serious downgrade for current MacBook Air users.

I'd also like 2 USB Type-C ports as well. Not because I need them, but more as a luxury.

None of that has been leaked though, just the screen. All that we know so far is the screen itself is stupidly thin, the hinge is a millimetre or so thicker than an iPad Air 2 (indicating the entire MacBook could be nearly as thin), the backlit :apple: is most likely gone, and the screen is glass covered like the MacBook Pros.

All of this is good news to me. So nope, not disappointed in the leak at all.

Apple would have to put a fan to cool that Broadwell U CPU thus making this upgrade impossible if Apple decided to use the fanless Core M chip. Even then, based on the XPS 13 benchmarks, it's only 0 - 10 % faster than the current Air. Anyways, it wouldn't really be a downgrade since Core M is on par with the current i5 Air if Apple manages to cool it down really well like on those fanless Intel reference tablets.

The Core M is only fanless if you don't put a fan on it.

No matter how pretty, the lack of conventional ports is making it a hard sell for me. I will have to see how Apple deals with the loss of these ports and I do not want to be carrying a lot of extra crap with me to just read an SD card.

Sometime Apple's need for thin and smaller decreases it's functionality.

Core M - Oh no!

it's because of market positioning, since Air is a ultrabook which supposed to be extra thin, extra durability I'm good with 1 USB port, same as Core M, people who want a powerful laptop wouldn't choose Air

Can somebody tell me why in god's name it would be a reasonable design decision to only have one port?

Why does anybody think this rumor is even remotely believable?

The original MBA had one USB port because all its ports were hidden behind that flip-down plastic panel for aesthetic reasons.

Now that Apple has moved beyond trying to put all the ports behind a panel, there is absolutely no reason why they wouldn't continue to have ports on both sides of the laptop.

Seriously, if you're somebody who thinks this rumor is reasonable, can I have a puff of whatever you're smoking??

Ports require space inside the machine, not just on the outside. That's why I wouldn't be surprised to see a one-port machine.

Good to know. Thanks.

As long as new MBA comes with a retina display and offers comparable performance to the current 11"/13" models - I am all in.

I love the idea of streamlined ultra-portable design going back to the basics of the original Air. This will be a perfect laptop for those of us who want the portability and mobility of an iPad, but need a real computer with real OS.

The gripes about "same old tired unibody design" are ridiculous. It's a timeless design, and I am happy with Apple continuing with it for another 20 years.

A fanless laptop is not an "end all be all" goal, and I hope Apple is not stupid enough to release one just to satisfy an irrational hype about "fanless". The fans in the existing Air models do not present a particular problem that needs be addressed at the expense of laptop performance. If the new Air is not fanless - that will be just fine.

if Apple decided to use the fanless Core M chip

There is no such thing as "fanless Core M chip".

Right, that's why there's unused space to the left and right of the keyboard in the 11" MBA.

The USB ports can't occupy the same space as the tab key and delete key.

So let's say you got rid of one of these ports to save space. Then you could get rid of one of the "borders" to the left or right of the keyboard.

Now you have a laptop where the keyboard is half an inch closer to one side than the other.

How likely do you think that is?

Indeed, to listen to people on this forum discuss it, then fan only exists to make noise and break. Personally I'm pretty thankful that my laptop has a fan.

Well Core M is designed to run without a fan and the effectiveness of this all depends on the OEM or Apple. If somehow, apple can cram a fan into that ridiculously thin mock up body, that would be awesome since there's a possibility that in can cool a 15 watt Broadwell U at full load. But there's no way you can run a Broadwell U on heatsinks alone unless you're talking about the heatsink surface area equal to that of cooler master hyper 212 heatsink. Then you can possibly cool that Broadwell U chip without a fan.

Perhaps Apple is thinking of the MBA as a very capable iPad that runs OSX and has a keyboard. .

The folks at Apple likely have no idea at all about how bad broadband is outside of tech cities and educational centers.

That ridiculously thin mock up body is just that - a mock up. It's not based on any kind of supply chain parts leaks as far as I know. So the "thinness" of the new MBA is made up at this point.

Personally, I'd be quite happy if Apple releases a new rMBA based on U Broadwell, with fans and retaining similar thinness as the current models. The key features I am looking is retina, reduced bezels and larger display at the current 11" form factor.

Agree. I was not that fond of the mock up unibody, but I'd be okay if apple decides to use either Core M or Broadwell U. Just don't take away useful ports from the current air.

I'll be buying a maxed-out MBA of the current style just before they stop selling them. Beats me why they didn't just ditch the larger bezel on the existing chassis and make it Retina. Oh, hang on... it is because it is starting to become a decent enough alternative to a MBP for many, and I don't think they like that.

Why do I think it is possible? Because I saw the direction that Apple took the Mac Mini and iMac.

Note that I said, "possible". It is still just rumor and speculation at this point.
