WRONG! Throttling is done on a regional basis now. And one can just give the imei number off an iPhone 5 to get the unlimited iPhone 5 data plan and use it with the 4S. I do that and have perfect speeds, and if they were to throttle me, it would be after 5GB, despite me using a 3G phone. HAHAHA

That is correct. I know it varies by place etc...
I used over 6GB's last month and I didn't get throttled even though I got a text message from them as soon as I hit 5GB's.
About the iphone 5 data plan you are correct. But if you have a 4S or below and don't have the iphone 5 LTE plan listed there they can throttle you at 3GB depending on your location.

I still have my unlimited data plan with AT&T and for this reason will never leave just to save a few bucks. I like not having to watch how much data I use each month.

This.

When you do get throttled at 5gbs it's only temporary.

Then you go back to full speed and only get throttled again after 1-2gb more.

and repeat.

I upgraded to the iPhone 5 back in February and I have had unlimited data since I joined with AT&T back in 2009. So I told the girl at the AT&T store to keep all my plans the same and she even verified that I was still getting unlimited data. Fast forward to last month. Normally I don't look at my statements very much except for the amount due and the date. For some reason though I decided to look and I noticed for my phone that I was now on the 3GB plan which actually cost the same as unlimited. This had been going on since I changed phones.

So I called up AT&T and told them I never authorized them to change my data plan and even asked them why would I give up unlimited to go to the 3GB plan for the same cost. The girl on the line opened a case and told me that they would text me once they investigated it and resolved it. 5 days later I got a text from AT&T saying they re-added unlimited back to my account and I went and looked at my account the next day and it was there. So I guess they will do it once in a while.

They won't. Your data plan was changed against your wish. If you willingly give it up you can't get it back.

Where is the best place to advertise if you want to give an account away like that? Is there like an exchange forum somewhere?

Still have my unlimited plan from my first iPhone from 2007. Don't have any intention of giving it up even though I never go over. Just nice to have that extra security. My wife has the 2G plan which is fine for her.

Wow, and it took you 6 months to notice that?
I'm checking my account like every day when I update phones just to be 1000% sure that doesn't happen.
I'm surprised they added back after this long but glad it worked out for you.

FYI, you can now do FaceTime over cellular even on AT&T's grandfathered unlimited plan. I believe that change occurred a few months ago.

you can facetime using celular w/ unlimited, I do it w/ my 4S ;)

TS, I'm keeping mine as long as possible.
Once you remove it you can't take it back.

Yeah it still isn't letting me enable FaceTime over cellular. I keep getting the same pop up prompt to contact AT&T as always. Maybe it is a slow/gradual roll out by AT&T. I reside in West Michigan, for what it's worth. I believe I am in one of the premiere AT&T markets, as we got LTE late last Oct/Nov, not too long after the iPhone 5 was released. No big deal. I rarely use FaceTime as it is.

I would MUCH rather keep my unlimited data plan...which I plan on clinging onto for as long as possible...until AT&T literally tells me that I cannot have it any longer. Hopefully that won't be happening anytime soon or at all.

My account has 2 phones with unlimited
1 phone with 2gb plan
1 phone that should have data, but does not?
And 1 ipad at $25 a whack. Probably be two ipads soon.

Two unlimited phones do about a half per month over the past year.

The 2gb phone was done 1 gb, but now doing more like 3-4

Pricing for the 6gb plan comes out about the same, but eliminates the overage on the one phone, and eliminates the $25 per ipad, but we give up the unlimited we have had for years, but never used. If I had move to a lower plan years ago, I could damn near buy another phone.

Decisions, decisions.

They have an escalation process to re add it for issues like if a rep in store or someone at best buy screws up the transaction. Which really can happen with just one wrong click. They 99% of the time will not re add it for anyone. However I have heard stories of customers with very high monthly bills or small businesses who have managed to get the plan.

Prior to LTE I never went over 2GB, but had the unlimited plan.

Getting the 5, data use happens a LOT faster (streaming stuff caches faster, and uses more data too...).

Now I routinely crack 7-8 GB, sometimes over 10! The "throttled" speeds are still plenty to stream Netflix, play online games, and surf the web.

AT&T tried to secretly boot me off it right after the launch of the 5. Had to call a dozen people raising hell to get them to add it back. The claimed they were doing me a "favor" based on past usage, and that they didn't need my consent to do so. Frankly, they didn't, but after I called to port my numbers to Verizon all of a sudden a "manager" got the UL plan added back, along with a nearly $250 credit for the "mistake".

I love AT&T. Outside of this have never had a single issue.

But I sure as heck am going to ABUSE the unlimited plan after that fiasco. They'll never have reason again to do me that "favor" because I'm not using enough data lol...

NOT TRUE! I willingly gave it up last year and went on the 5GB plan. I then called CS with this bogus story how I never agreed to the change. It was escalated in about a week I got it back.

So yeah, you just have to know who to talk to. ;)

So, you lied. Not something to be proud of. I would urge you to seek more integrity.

Having it on several lines saves me from throttling. Little did I realize years ago, how useful it would be today.

Thanks AT&T!

Theres a lot of negative perception about Tmobile but they have really improved their network over the past year. I have LTE service in Erie, PA while ATT does not have LTE service here...lol. funny how that works.

If you simply want "unlimited" then the Tmobile offering gives u 5gb for $70/month total. With ATT, they're likely to throttle you after 3-4gb anyways, so that plan is hardly "unlimited." (yes i know some places they dont throttle you but come on...really?)

Plus i need tethering, so i never really hesitated to get rid of unlimited data.

--------

If you really want ATT, i read somewhere that if you can get your hands on an original iPhone, yes the one from 2007, then when you sign up for a plan on your own by doing your own activation, the unlimited data thing was still there. Not sure if that's still possible but meh

I still have the unlimited plan with at&t. I bought my first iPhone, the 3G on launch day. I skipped the next two and got the 4S on launch day. (I would have gotten the 4 but I was concerned about "antenna gate".) So now I'm on the S cycle and I'm happy with that. I'll be getting the 5S when it releases.

I hope to keep the unlimited data plan for as long as it's offered.

I've never heard of anyone getting it back once they've relinquished it though.

I got mine back, but the rep took it away on accident during 4s upgrade. Took a week but got it back.

Yes, it can be readded even if YOU changed it!

They won't. Your data plan was changed against your wish. If you willingly give it up you can't get it back.

Mine was removed by choice in May 2012 due to a conversation with an AT&T rep over the phone and I changed to a data pro 5gb plan... They said the mobile share plans would have ample gb options... Nope, they had a paltry 20 gbs max when they first started. I called them again and they said wait a little bit longer, larger plans were coming out... I asked if they were still affordable and I was advised that they would be... Fast forward may 2013... Larger mobile share plans came out but were SUPER expensive. Called AT&T and requested my old unlimited plan to be readded. No luck, had claim 1 opened. Was rejected. Sent second claim. Was rejected. Sent claim 3 and gave them specific dates and requested a supervisor callback. That was today... Nobody called me back but I did get a closed claim number email notification. Went online and voila! Well over a year later and it's back, just like I thought it would be. Persistence is the key, well that and some evidence helps, too.

Claim Rejection:

Dear Larence,

Thank you for contacting AT&T regarding your unlimited data. My name is John L. and I will be happy to assist you with your inquiry.

You can write to the “Written Correspondence” address on your bill. They have the same processes and authority that we do. I will let you know what we can do for you. There is also an address on our website in the “Wireless Customer Agreement”. Section 1.4 states: “IF YOU DISPUTE ANY CHARGES ON YOUR BILL, YOU MUST NOTIFY US IN WRITING AT AT&T BILL DISPUTE, 1025 LENOX PARK, ATLANTA, GA 30319 WITHIN 100 DAYS OF THE DATE OF THE BILL OR YOU’LL HAVE WAIVED YOUR RIGHT TO DISPUTE THE BILL AND TO PARTICIPATE IN ANY LEGAL ACTION RAISING SUCH DISPUTE.”

I am sorry, but we are unable to make or send any copies of the notations on customer accounts.

There are notes from August 2012 where you inquired about our Mobile Share plan but no mention of your unlimited data. There was an upgrade on this line in September, so the same plan was updated at that time. There is only one communication about your unlimited plan which is the one cited below.

In May 3, 2012, you changed to the DataPro 5GB plan as your usage had been throttled on the unlimited plan in each of the two preceding months. The representative that you spoke to noted that more than once it was explained your unlimited feature was expired and grandfathered and that you understood and decided to make the change.

Larence, if you have any additional questions about this issue, please respond to this email. Thank you for choosing AT&T; we appreciate your business.

Sincerely,

John L.

Still have my unlimited plan. They can have it back when they pry it from my cold, dead hands ;)

I had unlimited with my first iPhone and gave it up in 2009 to save $5 per month for 2GB vs unlimited. Needless to say I am kicking myself for it now. :banghead: At that time I didn't realize the value of unlimited as I was barely crossing 250MB per month. Now I struggle to stay under 2GB every month. FML. Is there any way to get unlimited data back? Has anyone had success doing it with AT&T? What reason could one give for asking for that feature back?

What reason?

You want us to help make up your lie:p

Shame on you!

Does not matter as you can not get it back, period.

It CAN be done and I didn't lie at all... his case is quite a bit more difficult to do, though I gotta agree.
