11GB? No wonder some of us are being throttled... true we have the capability, but why 11GB? What are you doing on a phone?

More than likely, his phone is rarely if ever connected to Wifi, and a lot of netflix/hulu streaming and audio streaming at high bitrates. Or heavy use of iTunes Match/iTunes in the cloud. And he might be very lucky, and not in a congested area, so AT&T might not be throttling him as strictly.

While I don't/can't track my iOS wifi usage, I'm pretty sure I go through several GB of data every month, BUT most of it is over Wifi (both at home and at work). Even then I'm still at around half a gig per month of cellular data usage. And on months when I'm out of town and have to tether? Forget it. A GB per day is easily possible.

Especially with LTE now, it's very possible to blast along and hog up data if you're not careful. Dropping down to 3G speeds is a really good restrictor to one's data usage, but when you remove that and have access to 10-20Gbps+ speeds, all bets are off.

Yes, this hold truth, but I am an exclusive 3G/LTE user since my Wi-Fi speeds are crap at best and higher speeds are much more expensive than what AT&T offers. I'm looking at you Cox....

Whatever I want. It's unlimited after all.

In actuality, I stream TWiT all day from work since the Wifi is absolute crap. 20 days a month, 8 hours a day for a video stream...yup, that'd do it.

No netflix, just constant podcast streaming. Never been throttled. Live in LA.

Apparently you can take over another account that still has unlimited on it. Officially speaking AT&T policy is not to allow the new owner to keep the grandfathered plan, however many have reported that they were able to get the to do it. Others stated they just kept calling to complain until a rep added it back to their account, though I'm not sure I believe that latter story so much.

NOT TRUE! I willingly gave it up last year and went on the 5GB plan. I then called CS with this bogus story how I never agreed to the change. It was escalated in about a week I got it back.

So yeah, you just have to know who to talk to. ;)

No you got it back because they accidentally removed it. That is totally different from what this topic is.

The real reason to keep unlimited data with att is not for unlimited data. It's cause if you have a corporate discount the $30 unlimited still qualifies for discounts.

I get 24% discount off the $30 unlimited data. But att doesn't give discount off the 3GB/$30 data plan.

ATT also gives discount for the older 2gb/$25 data plan. But they stopped discount for the $30/3gb data plan and I have to bump up for the $50/5gb data plan to get corp discount.

Still have it.

I wanted to do tethering because my new company doesn't allow use to use their Wi-Fi but I won't because I don't want to give up my unlimited grandfathered in from years ago. I think I got it when I got my first iPhone, a 3GS, then kept it with iPhone 4 that I got about 3 years ago. Now I'll be upgrading to new iPhone.

I get my 27% discount on both the unlimited $30 plan and the 3gb/$30 plan on a different line. Only the 300mb plan doesn't get a discount.

Strange.

Some people report not getting discount with 3Gb plan.

I don't want to risk it changing my data plan. My fan used to give texting discounts also but stopped 3 years ago.

Seems like the carriers are getting stingier with perks.

FYI, you can now do FaceTime over cellular even on AT&T's grandfathered unlimited plan. I believe that change occurred a few months ago.

Thanks, but I actually am still not able to. I did read about AT&T expanding FaceTime over cellular to grandfathered customers, but I assumed that it required an iPhone 5 to work?

In any event, when I try flipping the "Use Cellular Data" switch to ON, I still get the blue pop-up box saying that it requires an eligible data plan, etc and then the switch goes back to OFF.

I have reset the network settings several times since AT&T allegedly made that change and extended that feature to grandfathered customers. Still, nothing has changed on my end. Is there some other sort of trick to get it to work?

FWIW, I have a 64GB iPhone 4S from launch day in Oct 2011.

I think it depends on where you live. They slowly are rolling out the facetime over cellular for unlimited customers...and I really do mean slowly.

Ah, my bad. I had thought it was rolled out to everyone -- but clearly its not. Nevertheless, its still worth it to hang onto your unlimited plan. You'll be able to use it over cellular eventually.

I have started noticing I am getting throttled with iTunes match turned on. I usually stream music at work and after awhile it skips constantly. I used around 4gigs last month. Not sure what the cutoff is?

I still have unlimited data on AT&T. can't facetime on cellular, but that doesn't bother me.

Also, I doubt you'll ever get it back if you gave it up in the past.

Is there official AT&T language that explains that for the unlimited plan?
I'm still using an iPhone 4s.

Is the unlimited plan even worth it anymore?

Kidding me right. You are paying $30 for unlimited. Would you rather pay $30 for 3gb or $50 for 1gb on the share plan.

On an iphone 5 its 5GB's then they can slow you down.
On any iphone before that its 3GB's.

WRONG! Throttling is done on a regional basis now. And one can just give the imei number off an iPhone 5 to get the unlimited iPhone 5 data plan and use it with the 4S. I do that and have perfect speeds, and if they were to throttle me, it would be after 5GB, despite me using a 3G phone. HAHAHA

Have had the AT&T unlimited plan from the beginning. Never use over 3-4 gb but it is nice to not have to worry.

If you gave it up, you can't get it back. You know that.

Honestly wasn't even paying attention to prices. I've had that plan since the launch of the original iPhone. I figured AT&T would figure out a way to kill the plan. I've just started noticing the throttling, that's all.

yep

Still have it, probably won't ever get rid of it unless they catch me on some technicality like I suddenly need tethering and have to give up Unlimited for something I need. FU ATT!

Except that wasn't the question. Did you give it up and get it back. That's the question.
