"Taking a role on to the new ones"?

Ooh! Ooh! I know! Pick me!

"Roll ons" are luggage with wheels and an extendable handle. He means buying one of those and putting the computer inside. Or, running over the new one with the roll-on. Oh dear. Maybe I don't know either...:D

Would you people stop trying to decode lingo and just tell me.

Do you use a PowerBook as your main machine, and don't want to buy a new Intel era MacBook Pro.

Thank you.

I just don't see why for the average person somebody needs 2 cores.
Not so sure. Applications grow bigger and bigger and your old computer feels slower and slower.

For example I found when running iTunes playing Apple Lossless audio files in the background my 12" PowerBook takes a really noticeable dive. Up to the point where I stopped using iTunes in the background.
Even when playing just small MP3s while using Photoshop. Not much fun.

Or playing YouTube videos while chatting or emailing.
That Flash application gobbles up all the CPU power my PowerBook has.

Try using Skype to call friends while browsing the web to look things up.
The sound quality takes a nose dive, or the connection drops altogether.

For all these examples dual- or quad-core CPUs would really be a blessing.
And it's here were my new Mac Pro really shines. I can do all of these things at the same time.

For now I exactly know the limits of my 1.33GHz 12" PowerBook:
- It will always be 'stuck' at Mac OSX 10.4 (Leopard is a bit too slow).
- It will always be running just one task at a time, be it email or browsing or listening to music.
- Yet it will be the perfect small travel companion or when I just want to browse the web in a coffee shop or on my sofa.

And that'll be its intended use.

I think Snow Leopard will change things a lot because it is no longer compatible with PowerBooks.
People who will miss the new features will just have to upgrade the hardware.
PowerBooks as main computers will die out fast.
Niche products, like the 12" PowerBook with its small size, will likely live on for longer - but only as secondary travel computers.

I still bask in the chipped paint glory of my 667 MHz Titanium powerbook everyday. It actually caught on fire once but still works. The fire damage, chipped paint, horrible wi-fi reception, and creaky hinges added much "character".

Up until last month I was still using my 12" PowerBook and then I bought the 13" MBP but my fiance inherited my PB and uses it everyday. I love the PB and will never get rid of it but it was just getting really slow for me and I am quite impatient. Love the MBP but still wish it were just a little smaller like the PB.

I'll hopefully be getting a 12'' PB this summer. Preferably a 1.33 GHz or better. I really like the small size computer/full-size keyboard combo.

I can't wait to get one. They're low-cost and do most of what you need out of a low-cost computer.

Still posting on my PB 12" 1.5. It's all that I need and I love it to bits. Been thinking of upgrading to intel but nothing takes my fancy. Will probably go with a netbook hackintosh if apple doesn't produce something to my liking soon.

1.5 GHz is as fast as it gets isn't it?

It is. I thought there was a 1.67 GHz, but that was only the 15'' and 17''.

If you get a 12" faster than 1.5GHz sell it on ebay as the unreleased PowerBook G5 :D

I thought I ended up buying what turned out to be the last model. Such as shame they didn't end up going on and becoming faster.

Anyway good luck with your machine Shake 'n' Bake :). If you love it even half as much as me you'll be incredibly happy!

We are still using a PowerMac G4 in my girlfriends apartment. It is too loud when on and too big all the time, but it spends 99% of the time asleep so it isnt too bad.

Dual G4 1.42, 2gb RAM, 750gb PATA drive with the old 17" plastic ACD, 'globe' speakers and one of the new Aluminum keyboards.

She would be better served by a mini with a ministack HDD enclosure, but why spend the money when the Powermac is still kicking. But if anyone is looking to do a trade.... :)

i just got my first mac last month so im no long time Powerbook owner. but i can say that years from now i will still be "shreadin'" on my MBP:D

Actually, the Apple upgrade company Daystar used to upgrade the CPUs on Powerbooks and..

... you COULD get your 1.5ghz 12" Powerbook to run at 1.67ghz. I think Gary told me once that they actually got it up to 2.0ghz but it was waaay too hot.

Cost was high, though... 600 smackeroos. Daystar discontinued this CPU upgrade last year I think.

Maybe Gary (owner of Daystar) could be persuaded to do some more CPU upgrades, I don't know. If the price were more like 250, it could be worth it.

I had a 15" 1.25 Ghz Powerbook w 512MB ram until about a year and a half ago. It worked fine for me, if all I was doing was iTunes, Firefox, iChat, or iCal. But the sluggish performance on Photoshop, Dreamweaver, and Vuze forced me to upgrade. Even the black macbook I got was sluggish when I had more than 4 applications open at once.

still on my 12" PB 1.5Ghz
still top notch, capable of running 4-6 apps all at once- well not recommend for long periods at a time (incl. photoshop, firefox, word, itunes, vlc)

lol waiting for next intel core thingy, wishing quad would come to mbp 15"

First off, it's hilarious that nobody could, even given all the contextual clues, attempt to figure out what you meant by shredding.

Second, I still use mine almost every day. Hinge is a bit wobbly, and it's very slow even with just tiger. Thinking of rolling back to panther but then there's no programs at all for it.

my actually main machine: 2002 PB 667MHz 1gb RAM still able to handle not too massive dv and photo editing_has had hinges replaced as well as hd, superdrive (originally only cd burner) and battery_it never failed me_however i am getting a high end 15.4'' MBP by the end of the month_

I had a g4 powerbook but has since been replaced...however it is still used everyday for "normal" computer by my girlfriend. It has taken a beating though since being given to her, dropped, power port all banged in, new power cord, new 6 key and up key and a blown speaker(all since fixed and replaced). I had it for 4 years nothing, she has it for 4 months beat to hell. But hey guess the saying is, it takes a lickin and keeps on tickin. :)

I'm a snowboarder from Colorado, I've gotten 2-3 hours of sleep in the last 24 hours. Excuse me for having a lack of decent vocabulary at this time. :p

a snowboarder not sleeping, on a forum instead of sleeping, someone been dabbling in the meth?
