does DVI support audio?

I have a recently purchased sony HDTV and the pc in port is a DVI socket and another cable which looks like an audio cable...

i prefer not to connect through hdmi as my hdmi sockets are in use

I can confirm that DisplayPort to HDMI is working with a mini DisplayPort-->DVI adapter and a DVI-->HDMI cable. I'm running that into a Monoprice 4x2 HDMI switcher, and then out to a projector and LCD TV (both via HDMI).

but does it do HDCP?

Apple has still not put support for HDCP into their products, so I would have to say no. So even if you did have a BluRay drive and managed to find something to play it you could still not display it on an external monitor or tv.

Though if you had a BR drive, would you have the option of just hooking it up directly to the TV anyhow?

I don't understand what you mean. I was talking about a bare BR drive only, not a standalone BR player. A bare drive has no way to connect to a tv.

The important thing is whether the hardware support for HDCP is there. If it is, then you can always boot into Windows and watch a BD movie.

Anyway, when Apple does support BluRay, they are going to have to support HDCP also (unless they manage to get the movie industry to remove that feature from the BD standard).

I will check in the morning to see if it has HDCP or not. If it doesn't then I guess the only other option is to wait until someone like VLC can decrypt HD movies.

If mini displayport doesn't do audio, I'll be sorely disappointed... they would be taking away one of the reasons to use displayport instead of something else. Displayport (normal displayport) can do all kinds of cool stuff.. like daisy chaining monitors and passing audio, video and data ( as mentioned before)

I am very sure it doesn't do audio. If it did, then the new LED Apple Cinema Display would get audio from it, but it doesn't. It gets the audio from the USB.
So... this is probably something that Apple will enable in a product update when "Steve thinks it's the right time", so you have to buy a new notebook/screen/whatever from them. Greed and business. They will never give things for "free", they always plan years ahead in their product releases to optimize profit. The consumer is there only to open their wallets. Just like you do now when paying extra for adapters to actually be able to use Apple's own new mini-DisplayPort, which only they use.

does DVI support audio?

No... that's why you don't get audio when you do MDP -> DVI -> HDMI. Whether or not the MDP supports the HDMI audio standard, the DVI plug does not. So if you want audio and video, Apple would have to supply you a MDP -> HDMI adapter. Or possibly an MDP -> DP adapter and then you could use a DP -> HDMI adapter.

But you can do DVI + audio, and you can still also certainly do VGA + audio.

So I hooked up my Toshiba DLP via the mini-displayport->DVI with a DVI->HDMI cable... picture is fine, but there's no overscan option like with my previous MacBook Pro. Kind of a pain in the ass since I'm missing a ton of picture on all four sides.

Here is a question, what would be the best way to hook a macbook pro up to an hdtv, I have a dlp that has HDMI,DVI and VGA, I use the VGA port to hook up my computer (PC), wouldnt it be better to get the displayport to VGA vs' HDMI, I thought the key to HDMI was that it did both Video and Audio signals, wouldnt you get a better video signal through VGA? I guess if the macbook pro had a blu ray player it would be different but if you just want to play HD downloaded conten, would the vga connection be that much different? I think it would be better.

If you're talking about the new Macbook with the miniDP connector, then VGA may be the only way that you will get a full screen without the overscan issues. See post above.

Cool, understood, and I meant the new macbook with miniDP. My question is the VGA the best possible picture output from a laptop through miniDP if your tv supports it.

I'm sure you will get different responses from different people, but in my experience if a tv has a vga input it is specifically designed for a computer and usually does a better job with displaying text; text via hdmi is often less readable.

I can't believe that HDCP was accepted by the market. We will pay for this for years to come.

minidisplay port>HDMI?

monoprice.com estimated late january for mini displayport to hdmi connector.

hey seniorfrog97, where did you see that estimate?

i wrote monoprice AND called them a week ago to ask when one would be available, and got no response or estimate.

i have a monoprice dvi>hdmi adapter to a 25' hdmi cable - tie wrapped w/a 25' 3.5mm stereo>rca to my onkyo 875 for my old pre-intel mbp. once that mdp>hdmi adapter comes out, i will have one less wire to trip over (or at least a less bulky one).

i called apple (AND went into the store) to confirm that the mdp does audio (which they say it does). when asked why they would release a new port, and NOT have a proper way to utilize it (for video AND audio), of course they just shrugged.

btw: i am waiting for my SECOND mbp to be overnighted to me because my caps lock key is acting wonky. of course i still have to wait 5-6 days till its "built" in china before it's shipped.

apple suggests using time machine to back-up my current mbp and then just restore onto the new one (saving all my installations and prefs.). has anyone ever done this? without any issues occurring? i know that is the point of time machine, but i have never tried it myself.

my take on the new mbp??? - keeping in mind that i have had a mac since 82-ish when my dad got an apple ][+, so i am clearly mac-centric...

pros:
amazing industrial design
rock solid gui/system (it just works)

cons:
- jobs is a freak and has way too many constrictions (part of the reason why "it just works" i guess)
- only glossy screen option (though honestly it gets SO friggen bright that it has not really been an issue)
- chicklet keys are kinda lame. it's a little harder to press the keys (my index finger is actually a little sore believe it or not - yeah ima wuss). the light leakage under the keys is redic. i mean, why won't they just put a little seal or soft gasket between each key and the housing. it would solve dirt and light issues.
- no FW400 (another adapter to have to carry... LAME)
- no blueray
- no hdmi (or cable/adapter for it)
- wonky hinge - if you are actually using your laptop in your lap - let's say in bed where the bottom is other than flat - the top has a tendency to close from it's own weight. apple, when i asked about this actually said: "well, its a notebook, not a laptop." ...LAME.

not that it really matters, i still shelled out 3k even w/a educational discount... that's what they bank on. that and the millions from iphone, ipod, and itunes. there is a reason why they changed their name from "apple computer" to "apple, inc." early last year... right?

What is pissing me off...

the most is that after all this time we still dont have an hdmi option for inputing a second source into the cinema displays... I hate to see the beauty go, but I'm gonna sell my 30" ACD and just get the 30" dell with upscaling. For this much money we should at least be able to connect our Tivo or xBox/etc to the monitor.

BS

How about adapters for plain analog video TVs?

On each of my last two iBooks and iPod 60 GB I had to buy new video adapters for analog composite/s-video. Is there any reason that, though they offered it on both the mini-VGA and mini-DVI notebooks, they chose not to offer a mini DisplayPort to composite/s-video adapter, in case someone wants to watch something on their laptop on a non- or pre-HDTV? I sometimes like to hook it to my Sony Trinitron to watch a show I downloaded. I suppose you could just hook the mini DisplayPort to VGA then try to find a VGA to composite/s-video adapter, but that's not exactly convenient either.

If you go to a apple store and ask a genius they might show you the exact cables you need to get.

I e-mailed them with a 'service suggestion' :

"Matt,

Thank you for your email.

Yes, our factory is trying to develop the item. However, it won't be available until around end of January 2009. Truly sorry for any inconvenience it may cause you.

Should you have any question, please let me know. Thank you for doing business with us.

Video works fine using a DP > DVI I > HDMI

Audio I haven't got working yet, I ordered the wrong cable :p Thought both ends where 3.5 but one was the standard optical end and I don't have an optical input in the tele, just out.

I was thinking about getting a home cinema surround sound though....Might be a good excuse :p

About time. We've been needing these for far too long. Would be nice if the cable had a separate cable that would plug into audio though... (maybe it does, since there's no actual image).
Unfortunately I don't think the miniDP supplies audio (full DP can, but it is not mandatory I don't think). I think I have read reviews of the 24" LED Display that indicate that audio is being fed through USB and not miniDP. Of course, that could just be the implementation in the display, or it may be the lack of audio in miniDP. We shall see I guess.
