Unfortunately I don't think the miniDP supplies audio (full DP can, but it is not mandatory I don't think). I think I have read reviews of the 24" LED Display that indicate that audio is being fed through USB and not miniDP. Of course, that could just be the implementation in the display, or it may be the lack of audio in miniDP. We shall see I guess.
Mini DisplayPort has the exact same number of wires as DisplayPort, and is capable of supporting everything that DisplayPort can. As far as anyone outside of Apple knows, audio is not supplied over the Mini DisplayPort connection.

Just last week I bought a 40" Sony Bravia xbr6 and I also bought a belkin hdmi to dvi-d. Now I have that hooked up to my dvi-d to mini displayport adapter and connected to my 15" mbp and it works perfectly.

Bluray movies played straight from my mbp to my bravia via hdmi to mini displayport looks just the same as bluray movies straight from my ps3 via straight hdmi. Very very happy camper.

What do you do to transfer the audio?

Thanks!

It does carry Audio...

I have been waiting patiently for this and was tempted to go to DVI and separate audio but I am going to wait a little longer as I have been told by monoprice that it will carry audio:

I think the issue is Apple's support of audio over the mini display port... so, technically the Monoprice person was correct. However, you will likely not get audio out of your MBP's mini display port to your HDMI input. I would *love* to be wrong about this... seriously.

I agree - HDMI CAN carry audio, DisplayPort (and Mini) CAN carry audio. However, Apple has to support this, and it currently looks like they don't, as evidenced by the 24" cinema display getting audio over USB.

I sent them an email on the same matter and got the same response:

Hello [adokimus],

Thank you for your inquiry. Yes it will pass audio.
Should you have any inquiries, please feel free to email us.
We appreciate your business.

I won't trust it until it is tested... but a hopeful sign.

Didnt get a chance to read through all the posts, but this worked for me round my mates house...

Mini display port to DVI adapter
DVI to HDMI adapter
plugged HDMI into TV, Worked, no issues :D
And then got a 3.5mm jack to phono lead and plugged that into his surround sound, sorted :)

out of a unibody macbook pro, I have apple mini displayport to DVI adapter and then a DVI to HDMI cable into a Vizio 32" 1080P LCD TV. The image shows up but it is constantly flickering, going off altogether and coming back, and it has what looks like static/white noise as well. what am I doing wrong. I've read that it may have to do with the 2 different graphics processors. I'm going to make sure the 9600GT card is on when I get home. anybody have any advice?

Bluray on MBP?

Wait a minute....bluray playing on MBP? Is this so? Or is this a dedicated player add-on? I've never heard this one before...wish it was so! Need clarification since sliding a bluray disc into a non-bluray player brings great unhappiness......

Sorry, this is physically impossible since the SuperDrive shipped by Apple isn't capable and doesn't have the technology to read the narrower groves that's used on Blu-ray discs.

got a mini displayport to HDMI adapter from monoprice and now it works great. maybe I had a bad cable from Walmart or maybe the DVI was causing the probs.

Yep, I got a DP-HDMI adapter too, the sucky thing is that it doesn't push audio through the cable. So you'll be stuck listening to the audio through your cheap computer speakers.

Actually, probably not.

Nearly all HDMI-equipped TVs allow at least one of their HDMI ports to accept a separate audio feed via RCA jacks. All you need to do is identify which HDMI port it is (read the manual or just look at the back of the TV), then simply connect the computer's video output to that one and run a minijack-to-RCA cable from the computer to the relevant RCA jacks on the TV.

On my Panasonic plasma, for example, I have three HDMI inputs. HDMI1 and 3 allow a separate analogue audio input, but HDMI2 only allows audio via the HDMI cable.

I've been using the minidisplay port -> DVI, and then DVI -> HDMI. Both from the apple store. They're an absolute rip off, but they work a dream. The quality is amazing. I just use 3.5 inch stereo cable out to the TV.

Movies are unreal with the "Air Mouse" app :).

MBP Mini DisplayPort carries audio

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I'll lay the blame on Google. ;)

Perhaps it won't be news to anyone here by now, but for the sake of anyone else brought here by Google I thought I should update the thread to reflect the fact that recent Apple laptops (since Apr 2010) have Mini DisplayPort ports that will also output audio.

As such, anyone looking to run both audio and video over HDMI can now do so with a simple adapter like this one:
http://www.startech.com/product/MDP2HDMI-Mini-DisplayPort-to-HDMI-Cable-Adapter-Converter

If you have an older laptop, you can also output the audio over USB with a more expensive adapter:
http://www.startech.com/product/MDP2HDMIUSBA-Mini-DisplayPort-to-HDMI-Adapter-with-USB-Audio

I have one of the simple adapters and it works great. I should also mention that on my (admittedly ancient) Samsung HTDV I found I got better picture quality by connecting via VGA. This seemed to be the only way I was able to access the native resolution of 1368x768 with no overscan, but it did require running a separate connection for audio.

I have a MBP 13" mid-2010, OS 10.6.8, with HDMI audio output. I bought Startech MDP2HDMI Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Cable Adapter Converter. The video works fine, but the HDMI audio option just does'nt show in my audio preferences. The only audio-out I can see is the built-in speakers. Like the computer doesn't see the mini display-hdmi converter at all. Are you sure that converter has audio? I'm about to take it back to the store... Anything else I should try first?
Thanks!

I have the same MBP as you (Mid 2010 13") and I have audio output through the Mini Display Port. You need to make sure that you buy a cable that specifically says audio, I got this one on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0025V2VO0/ref=wms_ohs_product_T2 and it works perfectly.
