Having my wife switch to AT&T from Tmobile.

This is what the AT&T CSR told me for what we want to do...

1. Pre-order iphone 4S and add to existing Family plan with new line.

2. When phone comes in transfer and port number (which will create ANOTHER new line on family plan.)

3. Cancel original new line.

4. ?

5. Profit.

Does that make any sense?
I'm doing something similar. So in order to port my number I would have to create another line then cancel the old one? That seems redundant.

That's what the CSR told me. Extremely redundant.

Oh well. I'm ditching the plan because I'm getting a weird feeling about it all. Sounds like way too much hassle etc.

So I'm just going to add her and get her a new free phone (3GS?) and then wait for my full upgrade eligibility on 11/16/2011

I was thinking of doing this.. Adding a line then canceling service in the first 3 days..

Anyone knows if they force you to return the phone or can you just be hit with the full un subsidized difference?

you just pay the ETF I believe, which is $325

Doesn't it cost an extra $250 to upgrade early?

Wouldn't an extra line cost you $240 over 2 years?

Wouldn't you only save $10, for a lot of hassle?

Am I missing something?

I'm sure step 4 is very important.

Does step 5 apply to you or ATT?

The extra line will cost $240 over 2 years, so that's $120 per year.

If you wanted to early upgrade this year it would be the cost of the phone (we'll use the 16GB iPhone) $199 + $250. This would extend your contract another two years, as well as push your upgrade date back.

If you wanted to get the iPhone next year, you would have to do another early upgrade since you signed a new contract the year before. So that's another $199 + $250.

Adding a line ensures you have an upgrade available every iPhone release, all at a cost of $120 per year. You'll have two lines with alternating eligibility. If you go the early upgrade route, it'll be $250 per year.

Good point. I wasn't realizing that the early upgrade pricing pushed your full upgrade back by 2 years... That seems like BS.

It is. Especially when your full upgrade eligibility date is only a month away.

I wanted the phone as soon as possible, and with the way AT&T is doing upgrades this year, this is the best way. It also guarantees me a new, fully subsidized phone every year. Anyone paying the $250 early upgrade fee will be stuck in an early upgrade cycle if they want to upgrade yearly.
