Haha oh dear. I'm in the UK as you are and oh man, the whole of this country and its Govt is run on illegal behaviour at the moment! A guy watching a film in his own home is not quite as bad as the things that are going on around us! Chill man!
How cynical of you :)

I use Kodi as a front end for playback of my 4K movies. I do stream but only from Netflix and iTunes on my 4K Apple TV.

I’ve gone mainly digital only because of not wanting to have a bunch of Blu-ray cases. And I like being able to play the movies on the go. I have thought about saving the media onto a hardrive - do you guys just download to an external HDD or?

Good question - I download my favourite 10 - 15 iTunes films to my MacBook and sync those to my iPhone X. I download directly to my iPhone X only films that have DOLBY VISION / HDR.

All of the other films, i've downloaded to my MacBook just once in 1080p and using TimeMachine backed them up to my LaCie hard drive which is very reliable. I then remove the download from my MacBook using the 'info' menu on the film.

This works for me. I also write down the date that i was backed up so that I can find it easily in TimeMachine if I need to. Luckily, I havn't needed to use this. Just a precaution.

Not cynical - it's so obvious to see right now! You'd have to be very silly not to see that. I'm out of the UK 8 months of the year, so I really notice things when I return!
Anyway, back to movie talk :)

With Disney’s Movies Anywhere platform, buying just from iTunes doesn’t really matter as much.

I usually buy from iTunes, but sometimes from VUDU and Amazon too. I prefer watching things on iTunes, though. More 4K content and almost always more special features.

They should definitely warn people about this removal thing. I thought iCloud was a backup service for them. Whenever people talk to me about Netflix, I always say I prefer to buy them on iTunes or wherever because it’s in my library for life without having to pay every month to suddenly lose it.

I had to transfer a family member’s account to my Mac as their HDD was failing. As a result of that, I stored everything from iTunes (not music) in the cloud. Friends series 1-10 in HD takes up a lot of disk space! I Have more space available now, so hopefully I can download them to my Mac again. If they had been “modified” or removed & were not available to download again, then I would have been absolutely fuming!

Either store a copy in the users iCloud account or tell them to backup when they download it. Having annoying to read T&C and all that should not cover them for this. Or people should get told to backup before it gets removed from the store. Or, the distributors/producers/whoever shouldn’t remove them from the store haha.

Also: what if someone only owns an ATV, iPad & iPhone. They can’t backup, can they?

Just be careful!!! A few of my purchased music videos are removed now and two films. Apple DO NOT REFUND on iTunes purchases over 3 months of purchase.
Their after sales services is poor and comes across as though they are not interested. I truly hate dealing with Apple.
I'm sure that if it was a film that you loved and paid for and was taken away, you would in reality be upset. Apple HomeSharing of a film is not an answer as it is unreliable at best.
Even though Apple promote their iCloud an streaming from it on iTunes and Apple TV, it is a luxury offer from them in their eyes. Content DOES get removed. In my eyes and friends have agreed, that is stealing.
Just be careful. I've learnt the very very very hard way and I was the biggest fan/promoter of Apple TV. I've tried to go all in for iTunes films and when I do, something nasty always happens from Apple.
I do not see it as a long term investment. It's a casual platform that is ideal for the film rental, cheap purchases at 3 or 5 dollars or someone like me who watches on a iPhone or MacBook when travelling - all downloaded not relying on streaming! (But I never pay more than £10 for a download).
What 2 films? I have about 200 on itunes and haven't yet run into this.

I'm mostly AppleTV. I just have to make myself wait to rent movies instead of buying them. There are very few movies that I watch more than once.

The Apple TV is a streaming device, you can't "back it up" but you can download all your purchases to your media library on your computer, then stream them locally to the AppleTV. That's what I do, with about 1.5 TB of media on a Mac Mini that is dedicated as an iTunes server (most of my library is from DVD's that I ripped myself, plus a couple dozen iTunes purchases). Disks are cheap, and I want to local copies of evertything I own. My library is backed up nightly to another disk and continuously backed up to the cloud with Backblaze.

You can store media directly on your iPad or iPhone, space permitting. You can also back up these devices locally, either through iTunes or third party programs.

I meant if someone doesn’t own a computer at all. iTunes backups rely on one owning a computer (Mac or pc) as well. If it’s not a backup service (iTunes in the cloud), then that person is screwed if they don’t backup their bought tv shows and films

Absolutely and of course with Tim Cook plugging the iPa as a replacement for a computer, backing up is very limited. However, on the plus side, the majority of movies remain on the Apple servers even when removed from the iTunes store. To be clear though, Emails from Apple do recommend backing up the movie.

As you mentioned, I have many friends who do not own computers and either 1. Simply do everything on their iPhones or 2. Older people that I know who had old Windows computers located in the spare bedroom of their homes for the occasional internet shopping etc have replaced these things with iPads and have never looked back - they simply love them!

Personally, due to running out of space on my portable backup hard drive, I only back up films that I truly love. Some films that i've bought from iTunes, i've only wanted to watch once or twice at the most - a few, maybe five, I never tire of and watch 100+ times - these few are kept downloaded on my MacBook at all times and synced to my iPhone for journeys.

Anyone go all in with getting their movie / tv shows with itunes ? especially now with the free upgrades to 4k ? I have a decent size library with about 300 movies .. was tempted to start getting some of my favorite shows but just dont know if that is a smart move. It seems like more stuff comes out in UV and also now disney and a few studios are starting their own download locker.

Free upgrade, (hardware limiting I don't need 4K TV) yes.. I'm set for life

Gimmie some popcorn and i'll park my keister for a good flick.

I wonder who has the most content?
Apple , Netflix or Amazon.

For the usage I do, I’m not sure if the best method is to have a Netflix account or just rent/buy from Apple and spend money when I want to.

For buying, definitely Apple - unlimited download of film plus 4K Dolby Vision & Atmos options, Apple's brilliant compression methods etc and works so easy across Apple platforms. With Amazon, if you look at the small print, you can only download your film purchase a maximum of two times ONLY! Plus they mention that they have no control of films 'vanishing'.
My experience here in Europe has proved that Vimeo and iTunes are the places for purchasing film.
Amazon Prime is worth buying whenever they have their yearly '£59' offer. Really can't go wrong with that and they have plenty of film to stream.
Again, Netflix for me has been great for foreign film (that i've then bought on iTunes) and nutrition documentaries along with the occasional film. Can't comment on the TV box sets as I don't watch TV in that respect.
