Wish I really knew what was better. I like Garmin maps, always have, but I see bad reviews on the App store for Navigon. :/
Those are almost all about the change in maps, not about the app itself. They feel that they should get the maps free for life and with the new change to Navigon that doesn't happen. Nor does anyone else offer that, at least not that I know of (with onboard maps), since maps cost money.
Most of the wave of negative reviews are from people who just bought Navigon before the change. So I can see how they might feel upset, even though they will likely see no real difference in the maps. I have a stand alone GPS from 2006 that has never been updated and still is 95% functional (it probably started at 97% lol).
But in the incessant complaining they also seemingly ignore any of the benefits of the latest update. I for one think the update is good. I live in Arizona, and often have business in CA. I am also right on the CA border and very close to the NV border. So I only need AZ, CA, and NV loaded most of the time. That cuts the Navigon installation way down and I consider that a nice benefit. I am talking from 2GB down to less than 200MB.
There were other ramifications to the older "super-sized installation" too: since the whole package is copied over to the iOS device, and then installed from there, you pretty much need twice the space available just to be able to install it (this is true for any iOS app). Many times I had to delete other apps or media just to get Navigon to load at all. That problem is now gone as the initial installation is much smaller (no maps).
But I am still puzzled by features that are missing. I can't find a simulation mode, for example. And there is no excuse for forcing address entry as if it was a 1990's era stand alone GPS unit: give us free form address entry already that allows pasting in an address.
I have also been playing around with MotionX GPS Drive more and more and it's really growing on me. Aside from on-board maps it has more features than Navigon by far (with the notable exception of speed limits). I am going to test it today for a road trip. I have chosen to pre download the maps for the route and will turn on airplane mode to see how well that works.
