It is the one are where I miss the skeuomorphic design. I think it would be so cool to look down and see a crazy animated hublot face.

I feel like some people find them too basic or digital looking, I would personally like to see more industrial looking watch faces

I'm not against new watch faces but obsessing over them like it makes or breaks the Apple watch is kind of silly.

Does not make it or break it for me, Like I said I love the watch, Have worn it since launch day except for 1 day lol, but still want more choices :)

I'm pretty disappointed in the current selection of watch faces and what they can do. The Modular face is the only one I end up using on a daily basis because I really want to maximise the functionality of the watch, but I can't say this watch face is very pretty by Apple standards. Even the color selection for the Modular face is pretty meh.

Of course I also have to chime in with those wanting complications on photo watch faces. Apple, please. I'd also love to use the Astronomy face as I think it's to die for pretty, but without complications that just compromises too much of the AW's functionality.

I love my Apple watch and for me the functionality is second to none. Its such a handy accessory and i have no regrets about purchasing last April. However, cosmetically I think it is already looking dated in comparison to other smart watches like the Moto 360 that are now available. Options for square and round faces for AW would be good. A larger face would also be nice along with more functionality to customise the face.
It will be interesting to see what AW 2 brings

And that's exactly why there will be an Watch 2 no later than a year after the first, and eventually a round format. If you're thinking that, imagine what Karl Lagerfeld is thinking about it! Ha!

If the 4" mid-cycle iPhone launch pans out, I'll bet we'll see 6 month refreshes, maybe the round format between every square update -- or larger or smaller designs, so as not to overtax a particular rollout, and of a variety that they won't cannibalize the latest updates -- just like there's no risk of a 4" iPhone cannibalizing larger iPhones released afterward. That way Apple has a complete watch line, like other watchmakers, rather than one-size-fits-all.

I honestly do not think Apple will ever go with a round face, they are usually firm on what they believe we want even though we do not know it yet lol, I would love for them to come out with a nice classy round face one to but if they do, They better have some killer watch faces like Android has

Agreed, personally I think the round faces are ugly, the Moto 360 is just too thick and a bit on the large side. The 42mm Apple Watch is the perfect size for me.

Apple has actually been very anti-customization. Just look at how restricted the iPhone is after all these years. You can't even put in 5 icons on your dock without jailbreaking. Forget about theming. It's their way or the highway when it comes to the look of an Apple device, no matter what the consumer actually wants. The unique faces for the Hermes branded watch makes it even more likely that we won't see customizable faces-- there'd be less reason to but an expensive Hermes one if you could add a close user customized face and a knock off double tour band. You might see more corporate partners and get a few more watch faces that way, but we're not going to get what we want.

Personally, I'd be happy with having a watch face that compliments the square case, rather than all these round faces and round UI elements/ apps. And while I might like to see a more classical watch like look (the Gear 2 appeals to me aesthetically), Apple won't see much of an increase in sales by adding more watch faces or a nicer case design-- those things won't drive buying decisions much. If you're stuck in the Apple ecosystem, you're just not going to get an android watch that lacks the integration that an Apple Watch has. Also, I'd rather see efforts made in making apps run faster, improving battery life, and even improving the clumsy UI before adding another watch face.

I hope WatchOS 3 proves me wrong, but I just don't see us getting many new or customizable faces any time soon.

and so I can be clear to apple... i am interested in many additional options for CONVENTIONAL faces. i was jealous when i saw the elegant face of the hermes edition... i would love lots of options for conventional faces please! the gimmicky photo and digital number faces have their place but i would like more elegant conventional faces.

I find the current selection of watch faces just delightful and affording enough personality and taste for all possible consumers. I prefer Apple focuses on more important things than adding more watch faces to the collection.

I think your response is exactly how I would describe myself. I use modular most of the time. In fact, I have three different modular faces. One for work, one for other times and one for night. But it is pretty meh looking.

Photos would be the one I would use if I could add complications because I rely on complications for three - four apps. Just prefer that over glances.

I also understand everyone who thinks it is enough the way it is.

The lack of Watch faces is probably the number one complaint from the few people I actually know with Apple Watches.

Not sure why Apple is so stingy on Software customization. Apple pretty much destroys the competition in the hardware aspect, and gives plenty of combinations of build materials and bands.

Not sure why Apple just can't open up the Watch faces to 3rd Party or add more faces. Doesn't seem like it should be that difficult to me.

I'm currently holding out for the 2nd Gen Apple Watch anyway, so hopefully more customization is added by then.

It's not so much the difficulty of it but rather a strategy by Apple to retain the exclusivity of the Hermes faces and thereby drive their sales, etc. There may be more such models to come.

Just for kicks, I wanted to see how complications would work on a square face. First try, without trying to put them inboard of the numerals:

Notice that they're a bit smaller than usual and might actually be outside the AMOLED's display area.

So very true...

Maybe a solution is as simple as letting us layout the watch face? We can already layout the apps (though always touching another). Maybe we could design our own faces? Maybe start with one of the watch faces and then move things around. Sounds simple at least.

I would mind a chronograph face with the inner circles being controllable. Maybe steps in one, alarm in another, weather in another? Who knows. There must be a limitation about where things can be added.

Version 2, with the weather, alarm, and activity complications lifted from the Utility face, and retaining the date and tiny moonphase of the Hermes face. I want to like it, but it's kinda busy inside the dial.

Traditional mechanical watches are usually stuck with placing complications inside the dial because the gears driving them won't fit in the far corners. Some high-dollar models can have a power reserve needle squeezed to the side, but they're not too common. The usual mechanical movements from ETA, Sellitta, Miyota, and other mainstream makers don't bother.

Ah, you reminded me that complications are actionable --

Check my previous mockups and imagine tapping one of the complications if the watch were 38mm. They're pretty tightly packed, aren't they?

(adding another mockup because, hey, electrons are free)

I've overlaid a screen of buttons from another app which appear with a Force Touch press. They're the same size as you'll get when FT-ing the Music or Workout apps. They're about fingertip size, and seem to be the target size Apple is trying to promote.

The complications beneath are small, of course, but they're very close together inside the dial.

I realize that complications are just as small when they're in the corners, but they're also spread much farther apart, and it's hard to tap the wrong one by accident.

To show it another way, here's a single FT button, not resized at all, mostly covering four theoretical inner-dial complications:

Not really because at least there is the option to change your watch face. With a regular watch it comes with one face and you are stuck with it. I alternate between the butterflies, the flowers, Mickey Mouse and my own photos depending on what mood I'm in and what strap I'm wearing.
