Hello,
Has anyone on this forum been successful with the iPhone 4 without a case? I'm thinking about upgrading, but I'd like some data on what my chances of full functionality are. I do not like cases (I've used the original iPhone caseless for almost 3 years now, with no damage), and though I'm right handed I in fact hold the phone in my left hand to talk and surf, so I think I'm probably sunk and will go Android. But, I thought I'd ask before going thru the hassle and wait of getting on a waitlist/getting the phone/having to return it/cancel AT&T (my current phone is, while cosmetically fine, after 3 years painfully slow).

SO: here are my questions. Please respond only if you go caseless!

1. Where do you use your phone? (city, state) DC
2. Do you typically hold the phone in your left hand, covering the spot?no, genreally make calls with the mic/headphones. If I am holding it, it's in my left hand. No reception issues
3. How is your reception? Do you suffer attenuation, and if so is it enough to degrade quality/drop calls? see above
4. Compared to your previous phone, if applicable?about the same (3G) if not better
5. Are you on your first iPhone 4, or have you exchanged it? If so, any improvement?day zero phone

Thanks so much!
Dave

I have an iphone 4 and I have a it caseless and no screen protector. I alreday have scratches on it (no idea how they got there). I hold the phone in my left hand and it works fine. It is better than the 3G software wise, but i would prefer the back cover of the 3G. This is my first iphone 4.

the iphone 4 looks ugly with a case. bumper is all i would do. I think the white iphone with the black bumper looks seeeeexy.

Nah, White iPhone, with white bumper... Thats the cleanest setup.

People who want to go caseless forget that it sucks to shatter a phone with no insurance.

The bumper does two handy things:

Prevents attenuations.

Prevents cracked screens.

THERE IS a built in advantage to needing the bumper case.

Besides, Ive had a naked iphone since 3G, im kinda over it. Its time for a bumper.

White on White.

Caseless right now. I have two bumpers that I switch on and off when I feel like it but right now rocking it nekked.

In answer to your questions, in everyday use it's fine, I get people all the time saying, "Oh you have an iPhone 4, I've heard that it doesn't work" all I say in reply is, "I have no problems with it".

Wow, that makes me so sad to hear that.
You can't tell me the fact that Google is so powerful on the Hill and in the media and there is no connection to the beat up on the iP4. That kind of response will make a lot of people in Redmond and Mountain View very happy.

I admire Apple for going with a gutsy antenna design, but by crikey they gave some good fodder for the haters to smear them with. I'm no antenna expert, but why didn't they put a coating or something on the frikken gap so the 'death grip' would never happen? *sigh*

After a month with a bumper on, going to rock it caseless until my free case comes in the mail. The inside of the bumper feels very stiff and the lack of a complete back panel makes it uncomfortable to hold after awhile.

Will have it naked for about 6 weeks, but still do prefer some grip on it. Getting used to the beauty of a "naked" iPhone 4 real fast though!

the iphone 4 looks ugly with a case.

my thoughts exactly. Ive been looking at slim, clear ones but havent found any suitable yet. Today i just put on the SGP Ultra Clear front and back film, so i can at least place the phone on the table with putting a napkin or something down first

1. Where do you use your phone? (city, state) Miami FL
2. Do you typically hold the phone in your left hand, covering the spot?

Lefty so yes I use with left hand. Typically I place my thumb dead center on left side of phone and have my other 4 fingers evenly spaced on the right

3. How is your reception? Do you suffer attenuation, and if so is it enough to degrade quality/drop calls?

With the way I hold the phone no I don't suffer the issue. I can reproduce it, but only if I hold the phone in a manner I'd NEVER hold it.
4. Compared to your previous phone, if applicable?

Compared to 3GS I noticed the biggest difference at my work desk. On 3GS I'd have full service. At work it varies from 1-4 bars at my desk. However, when I get a call I don't notice any signal loss and as soon as I leave the building I get full service.
5. Are you on your first iPhone 4, or have you exchanged it? If so, any improvement?
1st iPhone 4.

I use it 100% of the time without a case.

1) Los Angeles, California
2) Yes, covers it most of the time.
3) No issues with reception or dropped calls. Data speed can be slightly impeded. (youtube link)
4) Had a Nokia 2320 and a iPhone 3G before that. Reception is better than the iPhone 3G on the "3G" network. Nokia 2320 is Edge-only, reception is the same. Overall phone reception on the iPhone 4 is excellent.
5) First phone, no exchange or replacement. Bought Applecare for it, too.
