So how much weight difference between a "bare" Air and a gummy protected Mini? There is only 4 ounces difference between a Mini and Air straight of the box. A lot of cases weight 4 ounces! So in some circumstances a Mini could actually outweigh Air!

With a big IF: I'd hate to drop either one, given their premium price relatively and their high price in absolute terms.

It did make we think Apple goes to a lot of hard work to shave ounces, and we just paste it back on with most cases.
This is one thing I really like about the Nexus 7. It's got a sort of rubbery finish on the back so it's a lot easier to hold without a case.

First time I held the iPad 2, it slipped through my fingers because of the weight and smooth back (thankfully just to the bed). Put it back in the box and didn't take it out until I got a case (hurray for Amazon Prime!). I'd love to be able to go without a case and just use a sleeve for storage or lugging around. I think I'll actually go this route with the retina Mini. Alas, my full size iPads are all of the 64-128GB LTE variety so I'm loathe to use them without case.

I'm kind of torn. I do have to agree with some of the other replies to this thread - that on screen elements tend to display very small on the mini, and just right on the full size iPad. However, my biggest complaint with the full size iPad was just that it was to big of a surface to use comfortably in certain situations. The iPad Air may be much lighter, but it's still relatively the same size as the older full size iPads. So I guess it's a matter of choosing between more comfortable viewing or more comfortable holding. I'll go back and forth for days.

I'm very tempted to do this as well. I definitely want to go play with the Air in the store on Friday and see if I am compelled to pull the trigger.... I don't think I'll go as far as renting one for 14 days, but definitely going to check it out, and if I fall in love with the form factor I'll just buy one right then and there (considering there is inventory of course)

This may work for you, but I really need to use if for a few days to really get the "feel" for it. I need to handle it in the morning, in the evening while going to bed, fit it in my laptop bag, etc. to really tell whether I am going to like it or not.

Apple doesn't want you to keep a product you are not excited about, so there is nothing wrong with buying it and returning it 13 days later. They're ok with that. Their $7 billion profit it OK with that too. :D Having a happy customer is more important to them.

Good luck!

And someone has to populate the refurb store!

I am going from Mini to Air as well.. Only thing that kept me from the ipad3 and 4 was it's weight.. Although I am waiting for reviews on both the new Mini and Air to see what battery life is observed. If for some reason the Mini outlasts the Air by a good margin, I will probably end up with another Mini.

I went from a full sized ipad to the mini 8 months ago, and I love it for its portability. I travel a lot. I would find it hard to go back to a full sized ipad again.

Although I will check out the air, I will most likely upgrade to the retina mini instead. :)

I have nothing against buying and returning... I just think in this case I'll be able to make a decision just by seeing the Air and holding it in person. Mostly because I'm really more of an iPad Mini person and the air would have to just really blow me away just buy seeing it and holding it. I'm mostly going by form factor

Best Buy gives 30 days to normal customers I believe.. and 90 to Premiere Silver members. And Best Buy should have the iPad Air on Friday.. so I'd just get it from there if you can.

I will do it. I have given my iPad mini to my girlfriend and will buy the iPad Air.
Basically, I loved my iPad mini, but I bought it because the iPad 4 was such a brick! I mean, it was way too heavy.
Now, the iPad Air seems much more portable and I appreciate to have a big screen.

Still doubting, love the mini for the weight, but would love a bigger screen sometimes. Maybe I'll just check it out this weekend :)
