I'm tempted not to upgrade, I have recently JB the phone so have all my cool text tones now, the camera is crap but with 16gb the memory is fine. My screen resolution is fine.

I'm thinking iPad!

With the new processor in the iPhone developers are going to take advantage of that extra power. Think how slow your apps/games will run on the 3G compared to the iPhone4.

If your eligible for an upgrade there is no reason not to get it. Your 3G is worth at least $200 at a minimum on craigslist. Figure in 9-10% for tax and you get a new phone. It would be stupid not to upgrade because you "like your text tones"

Well...Happy To Stick With My 3GS

Very slightly off-topic, but better than starting a new thread, eh?

I decided when I bought my iPad to skip the new iPhone this year. I rarely use my 3GS anymore, since I'm a minimal phone and text user. When I do need its data capabilities, I think they will carry me through just fine until next summer. My resolve is already wavering, but I will be strong. Other incentives: This will put me on a cycle where I'll be upgrading only when my last AT&T contract is already up. Alternating new iPad and new iPhone every other year saves money and increases anticipation. Don't have to go through the pain of selecting an entirely new case again this year.

I can live with that. I hope. ;)

I can't wait to see the new games with the gyroscope. I'm really excited to see the accuracy for the future of gaming. Right now the games are getting pretty slow and I don't like that one bit. I can't wait to have everything instant. I've messed around with the iPad and its so much faster than my 3G. I can't wait until my iPhone can finally do things that quickly.

i m still on my 3g but def pulling the plug on the iphone 4 .. ive been up for it since nov of last year and passed on the 3gs. 32 gigs is perfect plus with hd video recording and my l13 inch mb pro satisfies my travel lust for a apple companion.

def gonna get the white 32 gig iphone 4

My 3g is JB and it for me runs to slow, I don't have winter board that really slowed it down, lockinfo, rmf, and a few mods. Just seems to lag when going to apps, and backgrounder only works for a few. So very happy to have something speedy and the resolution is decent on the 3g, but who wouldn't a step up on everything.

To answer the OP...No. I skipped the "upgrade" last year to enjoy this version. I'm looking forward to iPhone 4.

This is a great discussion. I'm in the same boat, now out of contract and with poor service in San Francisco and New York. All of the great hardware aside, I wonder: is AT&T unlimited contractless data worth the off-chance that iPhone 4 for Verizon will arrive with metered data; is AT&T unlimited data with poor/improving service better than Verizon capped data with presumed-better service? Similar to my original post:

  • Will you hold your breath for iPhone for Verizon—how much longer can you wait?
  • Has AT&T 3G service improved where you use iPhone?
  • Is AT&T's $30 unlimited data service important to you, considering multitasking and AT&T new metered data plans ($25/2GB and $15/200MB) that Verizon has hinted at introducing?
  • Does your AT&T mobile to mobile calling circle and rollover minutes matter to you?
  • Is iPhone 4 worth another two years of service with AT&T?

Isn't the iPhone 3G processor THE SAME as the processor that's in the original iPhone released in 2007? Why would anyone be content with a phone that slow?!

Because some of us use our phones as tools, and they do what we need them to do. If you're that concerned about how outdated a phone from 2007 is, then your life must be pretty easy.

No.

The 3GS is still fine, but the 3G is effectively obsolete as of now. It's MUCH slower than the 3GS so I can only imagine how much slower than the 4th-phone it'll be.

Add to that all the other improvements (camera, screen, etc.) and it seems like an easy choice to me. (The screen alone is reason enough. Even though it's fast enough, my wife is upgrading from her 3GS JUST because of the screen!)

iPad? There's no way I'll be buying a 1st gen. It'll clearly be getting a better screen, more RAM, and probably a front-camera next year. I'm betting the 1st-to-2nd gen jump of the iPad will be just as great as the 1st-to-2nd gen jump that happened to the iPhone in 2008.

Apple loves to do big jumps from 1-to-2 but then a smaller jump from 2-to-3. It worked well for me on the iPhone to buy a 2nd gen, I'll be doing the same with the iPad.

Nope. The only differences between iPhone 2007 vs iPhone 3G 2008 model was the inclusion of a 3G chip and gps chip. Camera was still 2mp. Processor was still the same. RAM was still the same. Even the 8gb/16gb options were the same on the first and second gen iPhone.

The next gen iPad will only have a subtle upgrade. Maybe more RAM. And maybe front camera. But processor and memory will be very similar.

I have the 3G and an iPad. I'd much rather have the new iPhone over the iPad. iPad is just not there yet and the size makes it limited to where you can bring it. I find the 3G to be painfully slow. The 25th can't come soon enough!

This. My 3G is painfully slow. I don't want to re-up with ATT, but am not going to buy it outright.

What is "slow" about the 3G?....are you saying the internet is quicker to load?...nothing is slow that I can see on my 18 month old 3G...I only have a few apps..maybe that's why?

I just can't justify the expense for the extra things you get, the resolution is fine, the battery gets me through the day...I would rather spend £300 on a dedicated digital camera that also zooms and takes HD footage.

You don't think millions of folks, including the many thousands that hog bandwidth just for the sheer fact that they can won't drag down Verizons data network as it did AT&T's??? I can't wait for Verizon's iPhone rollout. Then, AT&T's network will free up.

In any case, Verizon sucks where I live, but AT&T has ample coverage. So for myself and many others who plan on staying on AT&T for the foreseeable future, not upgrading to iPhone 4 would be completely nonsensical. I can sell my 3GS for more than the contracted iPhone 4 price. Since I'm staying on AT&T anywhere, I will make money on upgrading so will thousands of other people.

I think we will see a Verizon iPhone by the end of year. I think about waiting too. But, I'm unsure if this is a wise idea. Yes, the Verizon iphone will be an iphone, but it will also be a 1st generation device.

No one predicted the AT&T iphone would have so many growing pains, but it did. The same might happen to the Verizon iPhone. Too many iphone users on Verizon may slow down their network too. And, all the people leaving AT&T may result in better performance of the AT&T network. Who knows.

But, it may be a bit naive to say that all iPhone problems will cease once it goes to Verizon.

All great points. Decisions decisions. I guess less harm in waiting than jumping the gun. Although it will be killing me every time I see someone with their cool new iPhone 4 in hand. I'll be living vicariously through the posts on here come launch day.

(Watch me take it all back and be in line the next day...)

I'm not even happy to stick with my 3GS, let alone my 3G. No, come the 24th, my 3GS will ceremoniously be placed back in the box on to the "Apple" shelf in my room.

It might have just been those two things, but they were pretty darn important. I couldn't stand only being on 2G.

Really, every year brings some significant improvement. This year it's the screen and better camera with front face. Last year, RAM and processor and video recording.

But I do expect the iPad to have a nice jump next year. I'm willing to take that chance if only to have more than 256 RAM and 16GB for base model. A camera and better screen would just be a bonus. Plus I have the first gen iPod Touch and hate having no external volume buttons or speaker (and in the end I got an iPhone the following July). I don't feel like being an early adopter again, but YMMV.

No WAY!!!

The upgrade from 3G to 3GS was not even appealing. However, after 2 years on my 3G, I can now feel the need for speed. Plus the camera is pitiful. Also, a month ago my company closed all corporate email to the 3G as it doesn't have hardware encryption. I am anxiously awaiting June 24th.

However, my wife, who is iPhone-less... and not one to really care about technology will be getting my 3G. For her it will feel like a Porsche compared to her LG phone.

OMGZORZ iPHONE 4 NOMNOMNOMNOMNOMNNOMNOMNOM OMGZZZ

hey, say iPhone 3g out loud, then say iPhone 4.

Doesn't 3G sound square and blunt and old and weird?

Doesn't iPhone 4 sound smooth, curved, sharp and cool?

The Hardware, Epic.
The New Apps, Epic. (cos they are a gimick and everyone will buy them even though they are a limited trick pony and will bore after everyone has the same theme on their videos on youtube) Lol :D

i have had a 3g 16gb for nearly 2 years, i HATE the fact i cant record video with it.

also, the 2 mp camera sucks. so does the battery

im gettin iphone 4

When the original iPhone came out I knew wasn't worth buying it as it had 2G.
Than the 3G came out and I thought that it was time for Apple to release it.
But I never tried one until last year I got my girlfriend's which I exchanged for a iPod nano.
I used the 3G for about 6 months and I was waiting to see the 4.

The new iPhone has lots of goodies that is hard to say no, and 3G is obsolete hardware-wise, I'm thinking of giving it to my father(for Skype calls and mail as he hasn't a computer nor Internet).

No, just sold my 32GB 3GS. Will be using my iPad 3G skype setup until iPhone 4 comes out.
