Dynamic island is what happens when you want to make the notch even more intrusive. All it's special features don't need a load of dead pixels in the top middle of the screen.

I just got my first "island phone" with the 16Pro. I had the "smaller notch version" 13Pro prior.
I prefer the island, it's kinda funky in an Apple way, and way more useful, than the notch (which basically had no function at all). However, it's more distracting when you stretch a video full screen.
I think android went down with a better route using ultrasonic fingerprint reader and a small camera cut-out. It's not that I prefer Touch-ID over Face-ID, each one has their own merits, I'm fine with both. But the small camera cut-out is unquestionably less distracting.

Why? Sharp 1080p with 401ppi - plenty for its size, best LCD with cool, bright whites, thin & light, smooth as a pebble, large battery.

Now we have OLED with its weird colour cast which shifts as you move the phone. Flat edges which are not hand friendly. Heavier, thicker devices. Ridiculous camera module. Face ID I like.
I have an iPhone 8 Plus. I used it for five years, and I loved it despite its size. It was a great phone! Still, it's not even comparable in any way to my iPhone 14! It has a bigger, better screen, yet it's still smaller, with square sides rather than the soap-bar edges, so it's more comfortable to use, and it's so much faster!

I'm a bit over the notch. The Dynamic Island would be a nice upgrade. Not as nice as a screen free of inclusions, but since we're not getting bezels back any time soon, I can live with it.

No!! Not at all, it’s fantastic and useful. I can’t believe dislike is still brought up about the Dynamic Island. Do you need to switch to an android phone that doesn’t have the island? Maybe a flip phone? Hey…Apple can’t please everyone.

I can't say the Dynamic Island is really noticeable enough to hate it for me as I am not focusing on it when using the phone. I never really hated the notch but of course it would be nicer if neither were there, but there are physical reasons why they are there in the first place. I get the impression a lot of enthusiasts here study their iPhones in a depth many others would never dream of or think about. We have all these threads about obsessions with not having a case on the phone to avoid ruining the perceived beauty etc. Its a mass produced electronic for goodness sake, not a Faberge Egg. Just use it, enjoy it, like the tens of millions of other iPhone users on the planet.

I like Dynamic Island because it’s useful for me. I can control music/podcasts, keep track of food deliveries and sports scores. I was skeptical of DI when it was first announced, but since then, I have become a fan of it over the notch, which is of no use to me.

You can have it without a hectare of dead space on the screen though

I have had both the notch (iPhone 11) and the DI (15 Plus) and neither bothered me from the moment I acually first used them. It will be nice to have a full screen design one day but no rush!

I have my doubts on the Dynamic Islands. Not sure if that’s something I’ll want, but I’m fine with bezels on my SE. Doesn’t bother me.

I'm surprised people don't like the island. It's one of the most clever user interface tricks I've seen Apple do in some time.

I’m indifferent to it, but then again I never used a 14 or 15. Just mainly been using my less expensive SE 3 for two years now. I imagine it’ll probably took me a bit to get used to it and figure the Dynamic Island out.

There's really nothing to figure out. Things just appear on it from the apps you're using. It's seamless.

I like the minor functionality of the Dynamic Island but for the first year it cut into most video because it sat lower on the screen than the notch. Many apps have since adjusted for it but there are still some where it's an issue.

The DI was purely a way to signal a new iPhone design and all that functionality could have been done with the existing notch. In my opinion, Apple should have kept the notch until they were ready for the front facing cameras and sensors to be behind the screen.

However, not a deal breaker and I don't watch video on my iPhone unless I'm traveling somewhere.

I love it personally and interact with it daily. I play a lot of music and podcasts, and use the timer frequently enough, that the Island is so convenient. With the World Series underway, it is that much more useful to track the scores. I am disappointed with Apple for not making even more clever uses for it. Prefer it over the Notch any day, and my brain has learned to ignore it when watching videos.

I would like the option in software to disable the Dynamic Island. I've been hanging on to my 12 Pro simply because I don't care for the Dynamic Island on the newer phones.
That would be completely pointless because it would no longer be an interactive feature surrounding the camera and instead would just be a pill shaped notch. Either way you're not getting rid of it so it might as well be useful. Again, I think people over think things when theh transition between notch and Dynamic Island is virtually seamless.

Absolutely nothing wrong with the Dynamic Island, it was a brilliant solution to an unavoidable problem. Long term it will be decreasing its idle size, until it eventually disappears completely (at idle). The software features I don't expect will go anywhere. Live Activities is useful. But it doesn't have to appear all the time and cover full screen content, which I expect is how it will change once the hardware is no longer in the way.
