there is so much wasted space at the bottom. Am I the only one who thinks this is weird ?

if it was any lower it would be difficult to use. the placement is ideal.
Haven’t used it yet but the placement makes a lot of sense to me.
Consider the phones before it had “wasted space” on the bottom with the home button.
One thing I’m really liking is the language keyboard is now out of the way. I frequently go between two languages but cycling through them whenever I use emoji is... a chore.

My thought using it has been that it’s perfectly placed.
The keyboard is exactly where it is supposed to be. Your brain is just accustomed to seeing a home button in that gray area.
This is the best keyboard in an iPhone ever.
Which Languages? I use US and the Romaji / Japanese interface. It is always unpredictable which language it will cycle through next. Sometimes it goes between languages and somethings directly to emoji... i found by pressing and holding the world icon and selecting what keyboard i want to be the most efficient.
Initially I didn't like it. But now I find it comfortable typing. The raised keyboard makes typing easier.
My only criticism is that the space is poorly designed. Apple could have added some additional features on the gray bar or added different color options.

Same. I’ve been doing learning reinforcement by using the Japanese keyboard to type words and characters I’ve learned. Holding on a the globe is how I navigate between options.

It looks goofier in a screenshot. In use it’s exactly where it should be and appears completely natural.
I definitely think where the keyboard is placed is a good position. But they definitely could have made better use of that empty space at the bottom. I’m using the keyboard now to type this. Maybe in the future they will include something with an update.
I will start practice typing on my 6 rather than 7+, by the time I receive the phone tonight hopefully I will get used to it.
I feel like they could have done something else with those two buttons on the bottom instead of adding that huge line of waste grey space. Overall, though, I'm liking the feel of it so far.
To those who think Apple should have made better use of the gray space below the keyboard, who’s to say that they don’t have plans to do just that?
