I’ll probably get it for the improved performance. Though, personally, I feel that if the current design is real, then it’s ugly as anything.
Wow. In my opinion, the iPhone 4/4s is a design that is timeless. I've owned every version, since the 'original' came available in Alaska, December 9th of that year (I think it was 2007---but we were about 6 months behind the rest of the US). The 4/4s are my favorite. I think the leaks for the 5 really take it to a new level...and ugly certainly isn't an adjective I'd remotely consider using. To me it looks very 'utilitarian', sturdy...and a fine sanding of the edges where some of the 4/4s corners were sharp. Essentially a refined design of my favorite phone. I like it.
If the iPhone 5 comes with a jazzy new A6 processor (without too much overheating) and/or the camera is improved (already very impressive on the 4S), I will be first in line. Otherwise, I will sit it out for a couple of months until my wife's iPhone 4 contract runs out, pass her my 4S and take the 5 for myself (she's a self confessed luddite but the camera is important to both of us particularly with kids running around doing cute things that need chronicling).
I'm doing the same...just in the opposite direction

We, too, have kids. My wife has definitely surpassed me as the family 'photo-snapper'. As I mentioned, I've enjoyed the yearly AT&T upgrade for the new edition each year since the original 2007 release. I bought the 4s on release day. My wife wanted to wait (she was convinced they were going to drop this past spring)...so she's well over the 2 year commitment. She got her '4' when it came out almost 30 months ago. She gets the '5' and I'm sticking with the 4s. One reason...it's 64GB and I bought the 2 year AppleCare accidental coverage. The 4s is fast as hell...the camera is phenomenal for a 'phone cam'...and it's got plenty of storage. However, this is the one area I would like to see an increase...the actual on board storage. I may re-consider if they offer 128GB. I definitely utilize the space with music (Spotify/Mog/iTunes) and the latest apps that exceed a GB, which is becoming common-place. If they stick with 16/32/64, I'll have a much easier time holding out for the '5s' next fall.
We run a mobile audio and video production company and I do like having a bigger screen...so I indulged this past year with the Galaxy Note (as a companion to the iPhone). I. Love. It! So much I bought my bride one as well

With the bucket/family plan, we're actually saving money...so I'll have a significantly easier time staying away from our Apple store next week

PS--Just a quick addendum. I, too, have made money each time I've upgraded (from the sale of my year old iPhone). As I mentioned, I was always eligible (on the main line) to upgrade yearly. Last year, I sold my iPhone 4 for 350 (32GB)...and bought the new 4s for 399 (64GB). I also added AppleCare which I assume maintains a bit of value on resale. Looks like folks are still fetching a decent amount of money for their 2 and a half year old iPhone 4. They really do maintain their value...if you maintain them. We keep them in the Mophie charger cases. They keep them really pretty when it comes time to sell as 'used'
