If you didn't know it seems the iPhone 5S has a problem with the compass being off. Anyone hesitating with the iPad 5? I would assume the iPad 5 would have the same processor including the new M7. Hopefully Apple will say it is a software issue and fix before then.

why is it that now any problem on iOS devices has the word -gate at the end of it? Antennagate, scuffgate, now Compssgate?

I liked Gyrogate more.

Someone on Kotaku said that Gyrogate means the 5S won't be able see how much Steve Jobs is spinning on his grave.

LOL. But remember, Steve didn't prevent Antennagate. In fact, he was the one who uttered the now famous "You're holding it wrong" line.

Not a good enough reason to hold off a purchase.

Concern for me ? No. But if I wanted to later play games, or try to sell it to a private buyer, and no fix in sight, than yes, you betcha I would be very concerned. ;)

Can't you just manually calibrate it?

Go the Compass app.
Swipe left to see the Level screen.
Place on level surface.
Tap screen to manually calibrate.

It isn't just used for iOS device issues. Sadly, the "gate suffix" gets stuck on all sorts of things to denote some sort of scandal or controversy.

People seem to think it makes sense because of "Watergate", i.e. because that scandal's name ended with "gate" all other scandals should also end with "gate"...

...Even though that was the actual name of the hotel where the events happened.

If the Watergate scandal followed the current "scandal naming rules" that many people bizarrely insist on using it would have been called "Watergategate"...

Just because some new iPhones have this issue does not mean the new iPads will.

Nothing will stop me from getting the new iPad.......nothing.

No. It's just a bug. It's not great but it happens. It'll get fixed.

I mean, who uses a compass anyway? All you need to know is the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. If you can't figure that out envisioned the nearest Interstate Highway. If the number ends with an odd number that means the roads runs North and South. If the number ends with an even number that means the road runs east and west. If you don't live in the US I'm sure there are landmarks in your country that will help you figure it out.

Brilliant argument! :)
Let's remove from iPad everything that you personally don't use.

I never said or suggested removing it. I only said I don't need it and in the context of the thread title - "hesitating on iPad 5.." I mean I would not hesitate to buy an iPad 5 or an iPhone 5S due to Compass problems.

My uncle, Christopher Columbus, says he refuses to set sail until Apple fixes the compass on the upcoming iPad 5.
