It is not that large an issue. The Compass is off a few degrees. We don't know why yet. We don't know if there is a fix. Chill.

I will be buying the iPad 5 as soon as it comes out. Can't wait.

Don't play any games that use the compass/gyroscope, don't really use compass (maps circling around just leaves me dizzy and doesn't help me get oriented), so no, not concerned.

Even for those who use compass/gyroscope, I'm sure Apple is working on a fix, so I wouldn't feel overly concerned about it.

Are you going to tell us to stop using Google Maps too? Currently driving north on i95 and it shows my arrow going south.

Not telling anyone else what to do. Just saying what I use / don't use, and why.

Also, is the compass beng off by a few degrees going to affect your driving?

it's not just the compass calibration that's off. it's the actual accelerometer/gyroscope. so this could affect things like screen orientation, panorama photos, game controls and more.

i'm sure it'll be fixed soon so not much to worry about.

My wife returned her 5s last night because its sensors are off, so we won't be first in line for the next iPad. We would have been, but the 5s had more than just its compass and level off. Games that require steering are definitely effected. I've defended the iPad 4 on this forum MANY times, but there's little patience for this sort of thing. Apple made a huge deal about its new motion sensors at WWDC, and then give us this. A retina Mini would be nice, but I'll wait a couple of weeks.

180 degrees is hardly a few degrees.

----------

Go the Compass app.
Swipe left to see the Level screen.
Place on level surface.
Tap screen to manually calibrate.

Doesn't calibrate anything, its for measuring angle differences. Also even if it were the case, its calibrated to the incline of the table, not level.

Wrong !!

Go the Compass app.

Place on level surface.
Tap screen to manually calibrate.

What are you talking about???? You can't calibrate the level. When you tap the screen, it just offsets it to 0 and it doesn't calibrate. And then if you turn your iphone 180 degrees, the level will be off 2x the amount.

I don't know if it's me being stupid but I didn't think there was a compass app on the iPad?

I've waited too long for the iPad 5 to let "compass gate" stop me from buying it. I doubt it will even be a problem with the iPad 5 anyway.

I liked Gyrogate more.

Someone on Kotaku said that Gyrogate means the 5S won't be able see how much Steve Jobs is spinning on his grave.

Gyro Gate? I think this guy knows about Gyros and -gate. I present to you, Jony Ive and Gyros.

There may not be a compass app, but compass function is used, for instance in the stocks Maps app, and third party apps can also use the function.

My uncle, Christopher Columbus, says he refuses to set sail until Apple fixes the compass on the upcoming iPad 5.

Well we need to be thankful he didn't use Apple Maps to guide him either.

Funny how the "best?" brand screws up on basics.

Maps wrong
Antenna design wrong
Compass wrong
Gyroscope wrong

It's not like tiny unnoticeable things they are missing, this is IN YOUR FACE stuff. I would suggest off of which they know are wrong at launch.

Anyone just testing the phone out before launch would find these faults. Yet they launch anyway.

One has to question why.

why is it that now any problem on iOS devices has the word -gate at the end of it? Antennagate, scuffgate, now Compssgate?

Lazy thinking. Easy way to get attention for a headline with out actually putting effort into it.

#GyroGate

I will order the iPad 5 once its released but will return it if it has the #GyroGate problem. I can't return the two 5s phones as we already sold out older iPhones so I have to count on Apple to fix this mess. But if the iPad has this same flaw it will go back in an instant.

Has anyone with a 5S proven that their screen orientation or panoramic photos don't work? If not then it won't.

damn I play Asphalt 8 and it uses the gyro and I never noticed this problem. Doesn't one bit in the game so it's a non problem for me.

Yes because I use my iPad for surviving in the wilderness. Seriously if there was an option to remove the compass to substract $1 from the price I'd go for it.
