These new MBPs are killer, but I’m planning to wait for the M2 Max to come out before upgrading. The M1 Pro/Max MBP is very much a Gen-1 product, and I want to avoid any Gen-1 issues. The 2017 MBP fixed several of the complaints people had with the 2016. In the same way, I hope the M2P/M fixes any issues with the M1P/M.

I think the M2P/M MBP has a good chance of incorporating Face ID, as well. I think the reason Apple made the notch bigger than they needed to with this redesign was to reserve screen real estate for Face ID later.

I’m expecting the M2P/M MBPs to come out early 2023, most likely, and I’m fine with waiting that long. Anyone else passing on the M1P/M?

True, but not every generation is a major redesign.
Fair enough, yeah. But that's when you get the most added value YoY in tech. It comes with some reliability risks but I've found it to work out most of the time. You may end up getting HDMI 2.1 and FaceID on the next-gen but I suspect that to come in Spring of '23 at the earliest. For me personally? My waiting is finally over.

I went all in on m1 max. Hoping to get 6 years out of it. 16/2TB/64gb/m1max.

I am comforted that this isn’t your typical first gen. Promotion is coming from iPad. The silicon is arm just like the iPad. The tech and software have been “perfected” through use in other devices.

the only concern that’s truly untested is the processor ability under load. What gives me hope is that they were able to sorta figure it out on the 2019 16 inch MacBook Pro with intel that has a way higher tdp. Remember the m1 max is like 30W? At most?

How about when the M2 Pro/Max does come out in a few years and it's not up to standards? Would you wait for the M3? What Apple have released is essentially a laptop on steroids that is ultra fast and will last consumers including myself a LONG time.

My only question is - will this MBP be FINALLY at least a bit civilised and professional and not roaring like a hair dryer most of the time?. I had quite few MBP before, including the last MBP - quite horrible from this point of view. Now I have Macbook Air M1 that is finally dead silent. But a bit small

I'm holding out for the larger iMac, hoping it will have M1 Pro / M1 Max, or even better.... an A15-based chip.
Right now I have a temporary M1 iMac, and while the device is amazing, it just doesn't cut it for me.

I am blown away my the M1 Max, but my 2019 MPB is still doing everything I need. After configuring the M1 max that I wanted to buy its about 4.3K-4.8K....So I think my current machine can last just a bit longer. Going to have a lot of FOMO for a year or two...

Waiting. I want, but I don’t need a new one. My M1 air can actually playback and edit (short stuff) 8K footage from my Red camera. As I’m not editing my own footage most of the time at ehe moment, I (sadly) don’t “need” a MBP

Maybe I've been lucky but I bought every new gen MBP at release since the first Intel version and only the last-gen 16" MBP has been problematic; no concerns about this one

I am waiting for as long as it takes for me to kill my MBA 2017. Then, whatever M- is out at the time, I will pick it.

Clearly, you are speaking from desire and not a need to purchase a new computer. You will be happier to wait for M3, but M4 would be just about 9 months away from it, and M5 would be 9 months away from the M4..

If you need it today, it is the best they have for sale and we have all the ports we wanted and they removed. This is an amazing computer.

Waiting, but only because I just got my 2018 MBP only 2.5 years ago, and I'm betting it could last another 2.5 years if not longer. My usage has also changed, so I don't really need high performance anymore, though I'd probably get the base 14" or 16" Pro for the better screen and performance anyways. It's either that, or I'll try to go iPad only.

I couldn't consider these computers if I was in the market today because of their prohibitively exorbitant pricing in my country. The 14 inch starts at about USD 2600. The 16 inch starts at about USD 3100.

I could get an M1 13 inch Pro with 512 GB storage and 8 GB RAM for about USD 1450 today and be happy with it for my use case.

However, next year, or maybe the year next, these very computers and technology will be priced appropriately enough.
