I have the 2013 MBP, first gen of the Retina display. I personally changed the battery twice on it, the screen has been replaced in 2016 just because it decided not to turn on anymore. The computer has never touch a surface other than a leather pouch; and yet I am upgrading to this one. It has everything I wanted, new screen, MagSafe and speed. I never owned the Touch Bar MBP but I wanted it, its okay without it tho. The notch I don't mind, only think I wanted that I don't know if its verified is the wifi speed boost. It has wifi 6 which idk if that's the newest one out. I hoped it would have Face ID with the notch but I know next year will have that. I use my computer daily for work so I cant wait for this. I have a stable job now so I will probably upgrade in 5 years v waiting 9 years like my last one.
If I'm being honest with myself I don't need to upgrade my laptop works great but I have been wanting a new laptop just for my sanity for years now.
Mine arrives the 26th, 16 MBP w/M1P. Base model is truly plenty for me.

I couldn't consider these computers if I was in the market today because of their prohibitively exorbitant pricing in my country. The 14 inch starts at about USD 2600. The 16 inch starts at about USD 3100.

I could get an M1 13 inch Pro with 512 GB storage and 8 GB RAM for about USD 1450 today and be happy with it for my use case.

However, next year, or maybe the year next, these very computers and technology will be priced appropriately enough.

I don't blame you. I think the American prices are even high, but I thought that about the last generation too. I only got my 15" 2018 MBP because I got an Apple refurbished model with an additional discount so it ended up being $800 less than the brand new price.

The fact that I don't need a whole lot of performance anymore but still want a nice screen, would prefer to pay less money, and the fact that my iPad is going on 5 years old is what makes me consider going iPad only. What makes more sense: paying $2000 minimum to get a new MBP that is overpowered for me while also paying around $1,000 every few years to upgrade my iPad, OR get an iPad Pro + MK + Pencil for around $1,400 that isn't overpowered, has a nice screen, and I'm buying one less device regularly (MBP)?

iPad Pro seems like an obvious choice, but there are still a few niche things I use a Mac for. I also love the iPad in its 10.5"/11" form for its portability, so I'm not sure if I'd still love it as much if I ended up getting the 12.9" model to make it my computer replacement too. Sigh, choices, choices. At least I don't have to make a decision now.

I got the first gen M1 Mac mini with limited ports, etc., so now I think I’m going to hold out for the next gen macbook pro, with updated WiFi, Bluetooth, HDMI and first gen bugs worked out, when that’s released, probably in 2022.

I'm waiting for a high-end MX Pro / Max Mini, I no longer have use for a laptop who's 99% of the time on clamshell mode, hooked to an external monitor, thus, it makes little sense to spend on the new, very expensive screens, cameras, etc.. that come with the Pro & Max MBP... I was disappointed on not getting an M1 Max Mini yesterday, I guess with the chip shortage they wanted to first update the more expensive part of the line-up... the mid-tier and high-end Mini is still on Intel, sadly...

Hopefully this changes come Spring.

I‘m buying the next gen and will wait for a „display-gate“ „sound-gate“ or some other issue the first gen might have which we dont even think about yet.
I'm waiting for people to stop using the -gate suffix -- gate-gate -- for every little problem in their lives that has absolutely no connection to watergate or richard nixon.

How about when the M2 Pro/Max does come out in a few years and it's not up to standards? Would you wait for the M3?

I thought that was the war-cry of every other MR member. "Can't wait, this is it, the year I finally upgrade. Hmm, not happy, I thought the bezel would have been 2mm thinner, will skip this one and just wait until next year."

Worth the wait. M2 is out in a year. I got burned on the first Intel macs.. obviously Apple has a lot for quality for Apple Silicon. But M2 is just going to be better period. Just a year away

These new MBPs are killer, but I’m planning to wait for the M2 Max to come out before upgrading. The M1 Pro/Max MBP is very much a Gen-1 product, and I want to avoid any Gen-1 issues. The 2017 MBP fixed several of the complaints people had with the 2016. In the same way, I hope the M2P/M fixes any issues with the M1P/M.

I think the M2P/M MBP has a good chance of incorporating Face ID, as well. I think the reason Apple made the notch bigger than they needed to with this redesign was to reserve screen real estate for Face ID later.

I’m expecting the M2P/M MBPs to come out early 2023, most likely, and I’m fine with waiting that long. Anyone else passing on the M1P/M?
well You've got the watch so that eliminates the need for face id touch id anyway doesn't it?
I know it works great with my watch3 and the m1 MacBook air, which by the way is an awesome
way to get into silicon, it slays pretty much anything before it except the high end iMac or the
mac pro. As far as 1st Gen probs, might be good to wait but I'll wait for the Logic pro reviews
to come in before I get rid of some laptops, good luck and cheers!

For the record, I was planning on waiting for the second gen Apple Silicon 14” since last year.

I’m guessing Apple Silicon devices will be on a 2+ year upgrade cycle. Users obviously hang onto their Macs longer than iPhones, and these new machines are so blazing fast they won’t need regular updates.

I think $2000 is a small price to pay for increased productivity and creativity. Pocket change, in the grand scheme of things.

I agree! Some on here, and I used to be one of them, wait and save up for the big purchase when even if
you bought the base $2000 machine it would be a massive upgrade to most of us.
So I think its better to buy the cheapest and move up later to a used one,
we're lucky as mac users in that Macs hold their value.

Not upgrading from M1 Air. Not seeing anything that I really need versus want. And M2 will ship next year and be a big change.

No. I need it to make my life easier. If m2x comes out in 6 months and makes my life easier I will get it as well. I don't have time to wait on a computer if I need to use a laptop.

Going back to macOS a bit after being iPadOS only since 2017, when we last bought household MacBook. Coming from a 17 2.3 i5 with a 128gb ssd. We are assuming this will be a nice upgrade from the look of things. I’m excited to see what it’s like after being away for a while.

I am blown away my the M1 Max, but my 2019 MPB is still doing everything I need. After configuring the M1 max that I wanted to buy its about 4.3K-4.8K....So I think my current machine can last just a bit longer. Going to have a lot of FOMO for a year or two...
Have you considered trading in your old one? Apple offered me 47% of what I paid for my late 2019 MBP (excluding tax). Pretty good if you ask me, and makes the new one much more affordable!

I am waiting for as long as it takes for me to kill my MBA 2017. Then, whatever M- is out at the time, I will pick it.

Clearly, you are speaking from desire and not a need to purchase a new computer. You will be happier to wait for M3, but M4 would be just about 9 months away from it, and M5 would be 9 months away from the M4..

If you need it today, it is the best they have for sale and we have all the ports we wanted and they removed. This is an amazing computer.
2 more years for you is my bet. Touchscreen MacBookpro

Two more years is what I am thinking about, too. Unless the computer chooses to die on me, that is.

The going of this MBA 2017 would be the end of an era for me. But the computers launched today have some serious guts. I hope they bring in an OLED panel by the time I buy.
