I miss the spirit of the classic Mac OS. Customizability, while lacking in comparison to Linux and Windows, was light years ahead of Aqua-based Mac OS X. And I still feel as though the Apple menu was better than the Dock/Spotlight; I don't know why they killed the Rhapsody-based OS X's version of the Apple menu. Tabbed windows were great, and I used them often, and I liked the implementation of labels over OS X's version.

In my opinion, Mac OS 8.6 was probably the best mix of features/resource utilization/stability though I still prefer System 7.6. All told, the classic Mac OS had a lot more character than Mac OS X does today. Plus, classic Mac OS is the only version that will natively support my Quicktake 200. I suppose I could use Windows for it, but...

1. Don't install every damnedable extension in Creation. If you are loading two or three rows of extensions, then you are asking for it.

The best advice for anyone still running the classic OS. I still have my old iMac G3 with 9.2 to play Simcity on.

One reason I miss Mac OS 9 (and earlier), and why it remains better (for users, if not programmers) than Mac OS X: no file extensions.

That was one of the main reasons I hated Windows (along with the millions of other user-hostile design choices), and still grates me now. It is such a non user-centric way of looking at things. How can the name of something determine what it is? It just makes no sense.
If I call my cat “Fido.dog” instead of “Fido.cat”, he doesn’t become a dog, yet if I call my Quicktime file “movie.txt” instead of “movie.mpg” it stupidly tries to open in a text editor. Bizarre.
That said, OS X at least deals with it in the least offensive way. :)

I miss OS 9 more than you can possibly imagine. I miss Windows 98 too.
Modern computers are just so SILLY.

I miss the simplicity of the older OS's like 7, 8 and 9. Not the most stable OS's ever, but simple to fix if/when it went wrong. And little to no bloat in those OS's either. OS X is great, but it sure is bloated.
I also miss the immediacy of those OS's. Its still a very snappy OS today on any half decent spec G4 Mac.

Those old OS's didn't nag you all the time either.. "Are you sure you want to open this file you downloaded form the internet?" I hate that kind of crap in OS X, and I wish I could turn it off.
I also wish the OS X GUI could be a little slimmer and more functional like the older OS's sometimes. The eye candy is nice n all.. But it takes up resources and screen real estate..

Having said that, im not going back :) Although I've kept an old Beige G3 tower thats been upgraded to G4 spec.. Just for the odd occasion I may want to delve into OS 9 type stuff again.
