Terrible times

mine has been in now for 30 minutes and is only 1/8 the way done. I have 3 1/2 pages of apps

I made a thread today about this, I couldn't find one earlier.

I've had slow back ups ~15min compared to the 1-3 mins when 2.1 came out. Not only this I noticed SMS were failing and hanging at the end. I decided to wait for a back up and did a restore. So far, its been alright. Backup took 4 mins. Better than nothing I guess!

I am pretty sure it has to do with the size and quantity of the applications you have, plus the number of contacts, songs, pics etc. I have around 40 apps over 5 pages, 12GB of songs, 500 pics and 2128 contacts (2000 of these contacts are 'fake' and a solution to get my car's in build bluetooth to work with my iphone [look here]) and it all takes 3 minutes maximum

Well I only have less than one page of apps, 2000+songs, 200 contacts, around 300 pics... thats it on a 16GB.. I have 4.5GB left so, I think it must be something else.

Intersting, I had no issues backing up until this morning. I sync at home once or twice a week for music, photos and apps and at work daily a few times a day. This weekend I added the Craigslist app and did a few updates over the wifi at home (MLB,Sporttap I think one other) I did a sync last night at home and it took maybe twenty minutes. Strange as I had been having it done in the two or three minute times. Now at work and syncing and going on twenty minutes and only about half way done. So something is up for sure. I have about three pages of apps and find it strange suddenly this is happening and not just me it seems. Could be we all added the same app or did the same update for something. Okay while typing this it finished and all seems normal. Just odd I guess.

Well I'm glad to see this isnt just my issue. I've noticed backups taking longer and longer each time, to around 30 minutes for my most recent one. I usually sync 3-4 times a week. I've had my iphone consistently full with about 50-300 MB free depending what I do with music. I'm really hoping this trend doesn't continue...

(Iphone 3g 16 GB, 2.1)

available space may be one of the reasons, but probably not a huge reason -- I have almost 10gb's (9.9gb's) free on my 16gb touch and I'm getting 2 hour backups.

I posted yesterday about how slow mine was, and it finally finished by this morning. But i hooked it up today to see if it was faster, and it was <5 minutes. I guess the more you back it up, the better. I am gonna do 2 times a week now.

Not free space related...

I have 10gb free on mine. About 600 songs, no video at the moment, and 4 pages of apps totalling about 120 mb. My backups take no less than half an hour and a couple of times I fell asleep while it was going and before it was done.

Currently running right now and it about 2/5 done and pushing 20 minutes. It's really frustrating since the only thing that's changed since my last backup is some texting and few calls, some web browsing, played solitare, and checked email. No song, app, video adds.

I have a 3g, 2.1, 16gb.

But I love it. How did we live without???

Something strange has been happening when I try to sync my iPhone. I plug it in, and it automatically starts to sync and backup. After a few seconds, my iPhone screen shows the regular charging screen instead of the syncing screen but my iTunes shows that it is still backing up my iPhone.

Usually my iPhone shows the syncing screen until it is done.

Has any of you seen this or know what this is about?

I usually just unplug my iPhone after ten minutes because I barely have any data and only 3 screens of apps. I figured it was a glitch and not a slow backup since the iPhone doesn't show that it's syncing.

Please help!

My backup took about a half hour this morning. It's been getting progressively slower since 2.1, when initially it took about 15 seconds.

Not only are my backups now taking more than 20 minutes, apps are very slow to install, too. If I download an update from the app store, it usually spends at least 45-90 seconds after the initial download before it's done installing. I don't know if it's related to the long backups or not. I tried restoring from a backup to no avail. Maybe I should try a full nuke-and-pave.

Just started today

After backing up every day for quite some time, today my backup is pretty much stuck at 10% of the progress bar. I'm going to leave it hooked up this time and see what happens, but I'm afraid this could take hours. I guess that means it's time to release 2.2!

Update:Just decided to do my first restore to see if that helps. I'll update on my backup times once this process is complete. It is very strange that this seems to have occurred to a lot of us in the past 24 hours!

Second Update: I did the restore, what a pain in the but...took hours to get everything back on my iphone. However, I am back to < 3 minute backup times again. Not sure if the amount of time spent in restore mode will ever be regained by the shorter backups between now and the 2.2 update, but at least I know it works.

before 2.1 i had really really slow backups and everyone was complaining and what not...

then 2.1 came and i was so happy that backups would only take a few minutes again like before 2.0

but recently, ive noticed that its been taking times of at least 30 minutes, a few have even taken as much as 3 times that long

anyone else noticing this? anything i can do to fix it? do you think it'll be fixed in 2.2?

thanks!

im seeing the same thing here.

I'm having the slow back up issue now too. It all started a 2 nights ago. Back ups were taking about 5 minutes where they used to take < 1 minute. I wonder if it was a particular app I added, or whether it was a newly updated app. Is there a way we can see when new apps hav been added or updated on our phones? If we can, they we can sequentially start deleting apps to see which one it is. I doubt it has to do with the OS firmware itself, since it is weird that all thse slow downs are occuring in concert.

Well, I'll be putting this in the Apple iPhone feedback page tonight. I suggest we all do this too.

Update 1: OK, since 11/13, I have added/updated the following apps:

AroundMe
Easy Relax
Folders
Lux Touch
MediMath
Point About
Say Where
Say Who
Tap Tap Revenge
Vint B&W
Vint Green
Wikiamo

Anyone else load one of these apps lately?

Update 2: Hmmm.. Backing up is taking < 1 minute again. I wonder if an app was added/updated that just needed to be backed upped initially over a long period of time.

me thinks it depends on the apps you have installed, although i do wonder why the heck does it need to backup full apps even if nothing is changed.
