Nope.

I was given only one option when I preordered
the iPhone both on the Apple site and at Radio
Shack when they verified....

A $599 phone with contract.

Then you have been misinformed. You have to fulfill the remainder of your current one, but you will not have to extend your current contract.

I have to laugh here.

How am I misinformed when that is exactly what
AT&T is reporting to me?

It makes sense. They aren't going to let you out
of a 2-year contract with 1 year left. The $600
phones enable you "no commitment" after you have
completed your current obligation.

Of course, some of you are getting different
information because as I pointed out, if you pay
more per month in services you are eligible for
early upgrade discounts though it may not be
as low as $199 and $299.

Hey all. I am having serious doubts for iPhone 4 for myself at $599. My wife is definitely getting one, so I'll have access to the video and picture taking abilities. I just don't think its a worthy upgrade at $599. Maybe it's just me. I don't know. I did reserve one at the apple store but I don't think I'm gonna pick it up. I don't know, anyone else in the same boat?

I'm thinking I can hold on to that cash and get the iPhone 5 at the proper price.

BTW, I have had every iPhone on launch day. This one, I don't know.

Try this...
add new line for $10 a month, buy new iPhone for cheap with new line, have extra line for 2 years for emergencies

ends up cheaper than full price ($440 or $540)
plus you pay over time
plus your elegible for iPhone 5 next year
plus I've found it's always nice to have an extra line, just in case. Stick it in an old ATT phone and your good to go

It's bloody £599 or €699 in Europe and you complain about the price :p

At $599 it is a cheap upgrade heh ;)

I thought that was ridiculous too, but then I saw the math that showed how that price includes the VAT that they have in the UK, and when you remove that, its very very close to the US prices (after converting to USD)

You previously stated
Why? $599 for a 16GB phone that forces
me into a new 2-year contract is just absurd.

You are NOT forced into a NEW contract, but you have to finish your CURRENT contract.

I have had every iphone on launch day, and upgraded for free every year by selling the previous gen phone to cover the new one. This year is no exception. And yes, I get the cheapest option through AT&T, with unlimited data.

Maybe you should think about what you're doing and realize that each iPhone update isn't all that groundbreaking. Getting the new iPhone every year is pretty ridiculous and unnecessary.

You don't need the new iPhone, it's hardly different from the 3GS.

they are right. at 599 this is a no contract phone. So it would be the equivelent to this.

you are a year into your contract with one year remaining. you go onto craigslist and buy a phone from someone and put your sim in it. Just because you bought the other phone and are using it now you are not let out of the old contract, yet you dont have to sign a new one, however you still have to keep that line up for another year on the original agreement.

this is the same thing. you buy the phone pay full price. you put the sim into the new phone but you still have to keep that line active for the next year.

its not that complicated.

Whether you believe what AT&T is reporting or
not it says "with activation of a 2-year contract"

So, if they mean something else they are not
stating it.

Don't do anything foolish...laying out 6 bills is some serious stuff.

Agreed.

Going to buy it from Radio Shack. At least hoping
they get some. I get $200 for my 3GS trade-in.

says the person who spent all day trying to pre-order but could not get through before they ran out.

If someone wants the new iphone every year and can afford it, go for it. there are still a few freedoms left in this country.

720P HD Recording. Gyroscope, Retina Display, 5MP camera w/LED flash, thinnest smart phone on the planet....

"hardly different"?

That's funny, but I actually didn't. I'm just going to walk into an Apple Store sometime in July and buy one. I don't need to be first in line or anything. I see no reason to put up with launch day.

Yes, hardly different at all. It already records video. It has an accelerometer and I have never noticed the lack of sensitivity that a gyroscope will bring (since I never heard anyone asking for a gyroscope in the iPhone I can only assume that very, very few people did). The iPhone already has a great display. It has a great 3MP camera, an LED flash isn't all that great nor that important. The iPhone was already pretty sleek, the new iPhone isn't much thinner than the old ones.

As I said, it's not all that different from the 3GS and those features that are slightly better than the old phones certainly aren't worth $599, especially when the old phone is suiting its users just fine.

That is not true for most.

Trust me, I have been on the phone with AT&T
over this.

Basically you are entitled to an upgrade every
18 months. Remember, you got into a 2-year
contract and they want you to complete at least
18 months of it.

Only those individuals who spend a lot of money
on service each month are eligible for the $199 phones
if they are buying a new one each year.

Thank you, I thought it was pretty funny myself. I know what you mean about launch day which is why I pre-order for shipping to my house to avoid it all.

I hope you do but I am skeptical whether or not you will be able to just walk into the store in july to get it. I remember the 3g launch, it was about 8 weeks before it got to the point you could just walk in and it be in stock. I am thinking this will be the same or worse because the design change this year is as dramatic as the 3g was 2 years ago. But Good Luck

People thought the 3G and 3GS weren't all that different despite every internal feature being updated. The only addition to the 3G from the first was the 3G radio while every other spec remained the same. At what point do you draw the line?

you've held one? Lucky SOB!

but seriously, none of us know how much thinner it will seem, so that claim is sorta ridiculious

it is, though, mathematically, 25% thinner
which may not be a lot but its certainly "not much"

and you're forgetting the A4
its not just a processor, its a whole system on a chip, so the improvements will be more than just clock speed. Use an iPad, and then tell me the speed isnt better than a 3GS

That is not true. There are no possible $599 prices that extend any ATT contract. if you believe this to be true then I have a few bridges I want to sell you.

You do realize that the systems yesterday were jacked up and people were getting wrong info from pre-orders. If you are paying $599 for a 16gb iPhone 4 then your initial contract will remain the same.

if you've had every iphone on launch day (including the most recent 3gs), then technically you should be eligable for the 199$ price..

This is not true. Your bill has had to average over $100 the past 3 months to get the 12 month early upgrade. This has been stated over and over again on here. I bought a 3GS on launch day and my bill is only $80 after discounts so I'm not able to get the full discount until Feb 2011.

I am however able to get a reduced discount of $399/$499 with an upgrade fee of $18 and an extention of my contract. Any subsidized prices extent the contract.

I upgraded from the original to 3gs on launch day. Last month, I lost the 3gs, so I've been using the original. It's slowly killing me! I pre-ordered 4 (the big girl model) yesterday for $499 renewing my contract. AT&T said I was eligible for the No Commitment, but Apple didn't give me that option. If I still had my 3gs, I def would not buy the 4 for this much money. Hold on to your money and wait for next year.

Well then I'll wait a few extra weeks. Again, I'm in no hurry for a phone.

Describe "every internal feature". As I recall the iPhone 3G only got a new radio and the GPS. The only differences between the 3G and 3GS were the camera that could record video and was higher quality, the overall speed, and the compass. There's no line. It's just I don't see why one would pay over $500 for a new screen with a unnecessary pixel density, a new camera that's just a little higher quality than the old one, and a gyroscope no one even thought was missing.

You forget that 25% of something that small really isn't much. They've merely changed the shape of the device and shaved off millimeters. I'm sure you will be able to tell the difference, but it's not going to be that big of a difference. It's not like the current iPhones are by any means fat.
