Describe "every internal feature". As I recall the iPhone 3G only got a new radio and the GPS. The only differences between the 3G and 3GS were the camera that could record video and was higher quality, the overall speed, and the compass. There's no line. It's just I don't see why one would pay over $500 for a new screen with a unnecessary pixel density, a new camera that's just a little higher quality than the old one, and a gyroscope no one even thought was missing.

Sorry this took so long to get the proof you wanted. It was
impossible to connect to the AT&T upgrade applet on the Apple
site.

For those who wanted proof that a $599 or $699 full price
phone does come with contract obligation here is the proof:

contractp.jpg

(See right panel)

Albeit, I understand I still have a year left of my current
contract from my 3GS purchase last year. However, AT&T
is not doing a very good job of making it clear that (if this
is the case) once I complete that contract this phone will not
extend it any further.

NJRonbo, I am seeing the same thing when i try to pre order on the apple store website.

I chatted with an apple rep using their help chat on their site, and she said that apple does NOT sell iPhones without a 2 year contract. I find this hard to believe, especially with the 599 price, but she said that's the policy.

That being said, I believe the no commitment price is available from at&t. If only they were taking preorders...

Also, I think you should actually be eligible for the early upgrade price of $399 (despite the apple store telling you otherwise) if you are willing to agree to a new 2 year contract. According to this: http://www.att.com/Common/about_us/files/iphone/pricing_fact_sheet_ip4.pdf

This price is for AT&T customers still under contract, but not yet eligible for the 199 upgrade price. They charge 200 more to make up for the time left on your current contract.

I think this whole thing is just at&t's system being messed up. I'm gonna call them and see what the deal is. When I log in to the AT&T website, it can't even tell me eligibility... Says they can't process it online for my account and that I need to call them...

I'll post later if I get anywhere with AT&T.

Oats,

First, I greatly appreciate you taking the time
to provide the information you have here.

I am going to try and do the iPhone without a
contract this year so next year I get the discount.

Radio Shack is holding me a phone, and with my
$200 trade-in the price of the 16GB comes to $399.

The problem is, I am still not certain if I am entering
a new contract or not with the full price phone. It's
impossible to contact AT&T by phone to ask (I was
on hold for 30 minutes then hung up) and their webpage
update information is not working.
