I think if iMovie was to ever be released for the 3GS, it would be fair to pay for the 3GS version but have it ship free pre-installed on the iPhone 4, the $5 would be added into the $200 you pay.

I'm not against either way, it's a bargain, but I'm just saying a scenario that could work for it being free, same way they do it for Macs, iLife comes free doesn't it? Upgrades ect you pay for don't you? This method could easily work with or without a 3GS version, just saying :)

It's not a feature everyone wants or needs and the price is not ridiculous, so what the heck?
If it was listed for sale for the same price with the same features by a 3rd party developer in the App Store, would this even be an issue or a topic of conversation? Doubt it!
If you don't want to pay for it, don't buy it!

honestly- a reality check here.

Who is going to edit videos on a tiny iPhone screen? Nobody.

They made the app for iPad just as Keynote and Pages were made for iPad.

Apple then, after the Gizmodo leak, needed to have something new to show at WWDC so they scaled it down for iPhone 4.

In a couple weeks after iPhone 4, they will push it to iPad for $9.99 where it was supposed to be all along.

It would be nice to see it on the iPad, but the iPad has half the memory of the iPhone 4. 256mb vs 512mb. It's also higher res, meaning it will probably need more memory to run. I'm sure it's still possible though.

not really....my taco bell meal cost me 5.50

and it came out of my butt 12 hours later. How do you think i felt about that?

Alright, funniest post of the day by far.

And honestly $5 is relatively cheap for an app, and for what it offers it is justifiable. I've got iTunes credits lying around that I'll never use, so might as well buy something.

great comparison. It's $5, you pay more for a cup of coffee these days. $5 is a steal for an app like this... I suppose you can just save your dollars and stick with Windows Movie Maker.

Another positive aspect is that because it is a downloaded app, they will be able to update the application itself rather than providing an operating system update. Basically what they're doing with iBooks.

not sure, i want to try it out or see some reviews of it after people get to play around with it for a while, at this point, i dont think i will get it, if i need to edit a video from my iphone, i'll just edit it using imovie on my mbp.

I'm cool with paying for it, I just thought it was kinda sucky for him to show it all off, then add on right at the end "Available in the app store.." as he gave the impression it was one of the new features.

Like others I did originally think that it was going to be included on the phone already, but dont mind paying $5 for it, which is really chump change. It should be fun being able to edit movies on the go! think of all the bdays and prank vids people will be making...among other vids that go against apple LOL :D

According to the story on MR - the iPhone 4 has 512 megs of RAM. And one of the reasons that iMovie won't be available for the 3GS is because of the extra memory required. At least that's what I culled from my cursory glance at the article.

Although I think if it was thrown in free it would be something a killer feature, at this price I feel is extremely reasonable and accessible.

I have no doubt thinking many will go for it simply because it is by Apple, but there are currently other video editing apps available - if Apple made the iMovie app free, I wonder if we could could say the same thing, this time next year?

As other have said five bucks ain't much, and it's certainly less anti-competitive than giving the software away with the iPhone.
