CTV's Silverlight streaming Olympic coverage wouldn't work for me at all in Safari, so I had to use Firefox. It's not a terrible hardship I admit, but still a bit annoying.

Funny, NBC's Silverlight streams all worked perfectly for me in Safari (and Camino, for that matter). Well, except for the bloated logfile issue, which really soured me on the whole experience--up till noticing that I was downright impressed.

Worked for me too, in Safari... But - - What log file do I need to look at? Thanks in advance. :)

I can understand the frustration involved with getting a Mac because you would like another type of computing experience. Sounds like someone should have used the Windows machine to do a bit more research before converting. At this point I dont feel compelled to ask your age or grade level completion, since that has been abruptly bequeathed upon us all. If you need help, just ask for help. There truly are some very kind, patient and helpful Mac'ers here. :)

I've been working(at work) with mac for the last 3 years. Last September I decided to get a new imac instead of a new pc. After years of OSX use I'm quite familiar with the OS, and I have to say that my mac is up for sale.

I built a custom pc installed windows 7..... "plug n play"....was mac talking about the new OS from MS, because I can't vouch for PNP with my mac. Getting used to it is not the issue, it's getting it to work without the question "why". Vista was crap, I'll give credit to that any day. Windows7, can't be beat.
It's fast, works and oh "it just works"!! oh yeah and did I say it was fast! I'll race any of you in the 1/4 boot:)

Not to bash macs, but I don't see them as being superior over anything. And to have a superior than thou mentality or being that arrogant is just plain retarded.

You registered just for that?

Um, OK, I guess. You have a good time with Win7. I'll have a good time with Win7, XP Pro SP3, Win Server 2003, 2007, 2008, Ubuntu Workstation and Server, and OSX. On the same 13" laptop. ;)

Not "superior than thou," just plain fact. I need to support a wide array of clients, OS's, applications, databases and environments in their native forms. Somehow, I don't think anything from Dell's gonna cut it.

Switcher, 2010 Edition:

  • Tire of Windows
  • Don't seek advice
  • Buy Mac because it's "different"
  • Discover "different" means "not the same"
  • Still don't seek advice
  • Attempt to do things in old way, not new "different" way
  • Get frustrated
  • Finally find Mac resource
  • Still don't ask advice, but introduce self by venting
  • Refuse to work cooperatively to find solutions
  • Disappear into the night

The lesson being, if you want help, ask for it. Don't start the conversation by making patently absurd statements when you don't have a real basis for them.

This brings up the "are you this arrogant" issue so plagued by mac users. This statement is so condescending it makes me laugh. He wanted something different...we can thank mac advertising for this, he wanted something that worked, again mac boy Justin Long or whatever his name is. He is frustrated because of macs false ad campaign which directly affected his purchasing decision, in turn he decided to vent his frustrations,

You on the other hand sir, are "patently" attacking an individual for expressing an opinion in a format used to do such, in that case your opinion is more invaluable and out of context than the original post. That said, maybe people should just comment in a fashion that would shed light on a situation(help) instead of a demeaned attack on someones personal opinion.
And how does he have no "basis" for his statement? Do you personally know him or have had the same scenarios face you in your computing experience.

Just my opinion!!

Who's talking Dell?
Everything you said can be done on any computer. Macs aren't special in that way.

Had you been here for more than a day, you would understand this is an incessant issue we deal with repeatedly, and every bit of it is absolute fact.

You are entitled to your opinion, but as I said, if you want assistance, ask for it. If you want to froth at the mouth, go elsewhere. We've got real people asking for advice and suggestions, and we spend an inordinate amount of time trying to make their experience successful and pleasant.

What I don't take kindly to are folks that pop in out of nowhere, make inane claims in tones of righteous indignation, and have no capacity to see beyond their own ego. Temper tantrums won't get far, nor will defense of them.

You are welcome to take your feigned indignance and play elsewhere. If you have a need to be filled, we'll do our damndest to fill it, and there are thousands of us here with a vast array of expertise that spend our free time sharing it. However, if you're just here to be another one-night wonder, just say so and we'll tune you out.

To name whats on my custom pc, tri boot, windows7, ubuntu, knoppix, virtual machines, vmware running, ubuntu, XPpro, knoppix, server 2008.

Who buys dell anyway? Don't they bridge their chipsets in order to keep bios changes infrequent. Somebody said something like that about their dell.

I think in turn it puts people off. This guy doesn't deal with it everyday, he makes a post and bam, macbash the guy....like he's gonna be back:eek:.

I just find both attitudes pretty childish. As said in your post, if he's a one-nighter than ignore him....why add fuel to an already burning fire.

Look to the lower right of the post screen, next to the "Quote" button is a smaller one with a "+". That's multi-quote, which allows you to combine multiple quotes in a single response. to avoid strings of successive posts, a forum no-no. Alternatively, you may also edit your original post to include additional commentary as appropriate.

Thanks :)

I'm not quite a forum guy, don't have the time usually but to browse for an issue or two. Thanks for the heads up.

I'm not trying to troll the site, and that's what I'm assuming is the consensus given the replies. I actually have an issue with my mac and using cubase which is the reason I'm here. Just thought I would post on a seemingly innocent individual under attack. It's like watching a guy get beat up buy numerous individuals.

Then you should go http://www.macopinion.com/

Your call, my 'opinion'

I read the OP's post and he vents-his-spleen on the hassles of running windows on the Mac.
Your 'opinion' was about how Apple's advertising is false!

I think the bigger issue is just what you're using the TOOL for. Not to be "that guy that just says buy what you want and be happy with sunshine and roses," but I'd never get along with a Windows machine or any OS from them any day.

I love integration, and the less apps I have to open the better. The software that's available for the Mac is top notch, not just the stuff Apple makes. I've grown to love iTool -->.Mac --> Mobile Me, Final Cut isn't the best there is, but with my type of work I love that I can go on assignment, dump the photos to Aperture, export to Final Cut Pro for soundslides, then open iWeb to add the shoot to my site and one click publish to Mobile Me, then send an invoice from Pages that includes some of the photos if need be.

All of that, and I've never had to export and import any photo. Every app can pull from Aperture or vice versa 90% of the time depending on how I want to work it.

I am sure Windows 7 could do it . . . I just don't have the time to figure it out or deal with more than 3 cooks in the kitchen.

I've learned two new words: macjack and macbash. Thank you OP. :D
Actually, in fairness to the OP, they said MagicJack, not macjack. If you missed the infomercials, it's a little hardware dongle to let you use a regular landline phone with their VOIP system (Skype-like). Price wise it's not a terrible deal--a one-time fee gets you the hardware and unlimited US calls for a year, if memory serves--but they advertise with infomercials, which pretty much tells you what kind of company they are.

I like the word MacJack, though--I'll have to use that.

Worked for me too, in Safari... But - - What log file do I need to look at? Thanks in advance. :)
system.log

Open up Console.app in your Utilities folder to view logfiles. You'll see that if you've been running NBC's Olympic video you'll have thousands of lines along the lines of "kCGErrorIllegalArgument: CGSGetWindowBounds: NULL window".

At 750MB an hour (at least, that's the rate it's bloating my logs--you can see the size of a log in the lower left corner of Console.app when it's selected) you can watch some events without really causing a problem, but leave a window open for a day or two and things could get ugly.

Note that logs will roll over and get deleted automatically after a week, so unless you're really short on drive space you can just ignore it and let the system purge them on its own.

And please note: That's called being helpful when somebody asks for help with a problem.

Meh, everything just works for me. Including just plugging in my printer. Seems like your unlucky or have no idea what you're doing.

ok after reading thru this whole post... there are a few things that need to be stated:

1. magic jack is pure garbage and a huge scam i had it and ended up having to change my credit card account due to wrongful charges by magic jack. not to mention my cell works better in my basement than magic jack ever did.

2. windows is pure junk.. i used windows for 15 years always had issues with it and thought it was the way computers worked either love it or hate it but they are a needed item until i got my first mac 12/23/2009 and its a g3 imac mac and os x really changed my opinion of computers and its a joy to use i now have a g3 powerbook and looking for a reasonabley priced newer mac laptop.

3. i am a professional storm chaser and most weather modeling/live radar programs are made for windows machines but with a little effort on my part and help from the people on this forum i found alternate programs to use for weather modeling and radar/forcasting that work far superior to the windows programs... i still miss gr level 3 radar but the one i found works alomst the same and actually is better at 3d displays.

4. it seems to me that the people on this forum are more than helpful when someone actually asks for help instead of throwing a tantrum like a 2 year old when something doesnt work. id bet my house that most of the people here would come to you tohelp you if they could but not everyone lives in the same area thats the purpose of this forum.

5. it also seems to me that the cry babys on here dont want help they just haven learned how not to be obnoxious while they are attempting to learn something new.

6. it has also occured to me that the ones that act in infant ways may be incapable of learning something new so maybe they should stay with the far inferior windows os and windows machines.

ok i think thats enough for now maybe the op will figure out that all he needs to do is attempt to learn his mac and os x and ask for help not throw a tantrum and people will be more than willing to help him solve the problems he is having unless he is incapable of doing that.

:apple:'s are the best

windows is garbage

hope everyone has a great day !! :apple:

Ok, I think this thread has gone on long enough, nothing good coming out of it so I'm going to lock it.

Oh darn, I can't, I'm not an admin, I forgot.

(trying to inject some humor into this thread)

Rocketscience

These are worst case scenarios. Sometimes some steps are not even necessary.

Printer = plug in wall, plug in usb (or the like), insert disc, follow instructions.
magicJack = plug in usb, follow instructions.
parrallels = insert disc, follow instructions.
windows 7 on parrallels = open parallels, follow instructions, insert windows disc, follow more instructions.

Maybe your problem is following instructions! You are going to be hard pressed finding any operating system that 'just knows'. (Or anything in life).

Good Luck fellow human!

Thanks! Checked my log file... it seems to be limited to 4000 lines so I'm good. :)

may I add:
  • Assume that all the other Mac users must be morons for not noticing this problem
There may be a sticky thread related to these points - I have dealt with this kind of attitude from switchers more than once before... :p

OUTSTANDING!!! I enjoyed that..

OP, my experience has been just the opposite actually.. I've found that things work much easier on my mac, ironically enough, ESPECIALLY printers and things of that nature.. While I respect your opinion (maybe not your whiny assumption that just because YOU can't seem to figure something out it MUST be true, but I do respect your opinion in general) I must point out that I actually have experienced the exact opposite.. Meaning I find myself jumping thru hoop after hoop to get my windows computer to actually work well with peripherals, software, etc.etc.. Truthfully though, I'm sure that's just me not quite being up to speed on the windows way of working..
