I see a lot of these 'I can check notifications and not offend my boss/spouse/friends/etc.'

I share most of the excitement about the watch, but this one eludes me. How is repeatedly looking at your watch less rude than looking at your phone? Everyone will know what you are doing... No one is being fooled.

Well, my boss won't hear/feel my phone vibrating every 2 seconds. I'll be alerted by a tap to my wrist and it's a hell of a lot easier to look at your wrist in a subtle way than your phone.

It's the microphone and wifi capability that would restrict me from bringing it to my work area. But now that I think of it, I actually might be able to bring it to my building and drop it in these little lock boxes (which would help, because that'd still be a quarter mile walk. Also there is a fitness area where I could probably use the watch).

Also, please explain to me how the :apple:watch could still use wifi and receive phone calls without my iPhone? I thought the iPhone needed to be in range and/or on the same wifi network to allow both data and cellular usage.

I suspect they won't be allowed in several places, particularly after the next version of the SDK is released enabling native apps.

I just can't wait to get it already, the wait has been unbearably long. It feels like the wait for the first iPhone.

So the preorder is actually thursday night/ early friday morning?

My birthday is on the 11th, so I get pre-order, birthday and then Game of Thrones season premiere all in one weekend! Ha. In some ways, being insanely busy at work is good... less time spent drooling over forums and gazing at pictures.

If your iPhone is that far away, you couldn't use wifi.

Your Watch would just be a watch. It could, however, sync up with your iPhone once you were in range again.

The watch and phone will only communicate via Wi-Fi if they are on the same network and can find each other, just like iPhones can sync with iTunes via Wi-Fi, for example. This will give you freedom to roam your house, but, it isn't going to let you leave your phone at home and have full watch functionality.

I won't be buying an Apple watch simply because it is ugly and way to feminine looking for my tastes. This limits me to those 'other' watches. You consider that a good enough reason to list an Android Wear or Pebble watch as far superior?

If you think the Apple watch is ugly, I feel sorry for you due to your other smartwatch choices available. Talk about the worst looking designs possible.

Actually it's been established that the watch doesn't connect to a network infrastructure. It has wifi, but only connects directly, peer-to-peer with the iPhone. This is irrespective of any network, whether the iPhone is on a network, or not on a network. I think it works similarly to how it works with AirPlay in ios 8 with the latest Apple TV software. The iPhone and Apple TV can communicate irrespective of whether or not one, the other, or both are on the same, different, or no network at all, using peer-to-peer.

I believe the watch will use Bluetooth to save power when in short range from the iPhone, and wifi when not. Another possible switch to wifi would be connectivity speed at times, maybe?

I'm not so impatient.
And now leave me alone. I have to work on my time machine to skip this horrible long easter week to go directly to next Friday !

Ok, to be honest: I'm glad I found you here. So I know I'm not the only freak who wakes up at night just because of thinking about the Apple watch.

I think I'm actually getting nervous. I know I want it, but scared it will be a bit of a flop for me. And no, I can't just sit back and wait or just get the Aluminium sports model to split the difference (it's gotta suit my taste regardless!).

Edit: haha! I went the sports Aluminium model in the end!

I'm not iPhone excited, but yes, I'm counting down the days.

I am iPhone first gen excited. This gets my first gen excitement.:D:D:cool:

The rest of the iPhones were great to get but none were THAT much different than the previous. All very nice incremental changes. This is the first decent watch that looks great AND has notifications AND phone calls if I need!

I can finally leave my phone in the locker at the gym and use the watch on the network too!

Right now I'm excited about tomorrow! I'm going to my try-on appointment so I can't wait to see it for the first time ever! (Not so excited about Atlanta's traffic though lol). I have to wait until May to get mine so I don't even wanna know how many days are left until I get it or I'll be depressed the whole time lol

You're wrong here, sorry. It has been confirmed by David Pogue in his review. Not only can the watch connect via Infrastructure Wi-Fi, but, it can even do things on known connections without the phone involved at all whatsoever. That set of things is limited, but, it is not empty.

So no, this has not "been established" and in fact, the opposite has.

I've definitely gotten a lot more excited since I posted that, haha. I saw it at an Apple Store yesterday and I can't wait to strap it on my wrist.
