Im very much scared of this. It doesnt help much when I have already been through this scenario.

2 years ago when the Iphone 3g came out, I had a grandfathered text messaging plan with ATT that was 50 text a month for 2 bucks a month. My wife and I dont text that much and it met our needs and was cheaper then paying the horrendous charges they charge for not having a plan. We bought my wife the 3g, and they asked if we wanted to upgrade text plans or anything. We said no and they said ok.

Fast forward a month when I get my bill. I had no text plan on her line. It had been removed. And was removed the day we got her Iphone. I screamed and hollered about losing the plan and wanting it back. I went up the chain to a manager, and their manager. I couldnt get it added back because it was no longer in the system. You see once a grandfathered plan is "grandfathered" they remove it out of the system that no matter what no one can add it back. Sure I got a new text plan, 200 texts for 5 bux a month, and several months of credit...but I still lost the plan. Simply due to the fact they cant add it back.

Now the unlimited data plan has been "grandfathered". If they remove it, even by "accident" they wont be able to put it back on as they have removed it from the system. I will be ordering my wifes 4g phone through Apple.com in hopes that I avoid this mess. However I have another monkey wrench. That same rep who botched this up screwed up our upgrade plans at the time. They used my upgrade instead of hers to upgrade her 3g. She bought me a 3gs in december for Christmas, and used her upgrade to upgrade mine. So now I have to use my upgrade to upgrade her phone since her 3g is on its last legs. I fear of problems but I will be avoiding any humans at att like the plague. I wish I had an apple store here...

Exact same thing happened to me on a grandfathered text/mms plan. I was told the exact same thing, but kept going up the chain of command until I spoke with someone in the office of the president. Miraculously, the plan was able to be added back on after being told countless times it was a lost cause....I made them add a written note on my account saying nothing whatsoever could be changed without written or faxed correspondence.

Every single time I would go into the AT&T store for something as simple as purchasing a phone charger, the rep would ask for my number. I found this odd but obliged anyways. I found out later that AT&T reps were payed commission for every 'feature' that they up-sold to the customer. So, you will have unscrupulous reps adding on redundant features just to get a commission. What they would do as to hopefully not alert the customer was remove your add-on txt plan for instance, and add it right back. In my case the idiot removed it, only to add back the current 'mediamax' plan which wasn't nearly as nice as my grandfathered plan.

Why AT&T didn't have a more through checks and balances system was beyond me. They were probably getting scammed out of millions on commissions by employees. Maybe they've done something since then as this was years ago..

Just last year when purchasing a couple iPhone 3GS, and telling the rep that I just wanted the phones and not a single solitary thing changed on the account; I get home to see she has not only removed my family text messaging and added the $20 unlimited package to each line, but also marked 2 phones that didn't even get new iPhones as having done so, thus my upgrade dates were screwed up. I made sure her manager became aware of this, and he handled the situation, although not promptly.

Moral of the story: Never go to an AT&T store if you don't have to. I'm pre-ordering this year. Also never give them your phone # when purchasing accessories, as this is a window into your account. I know there are good people working there as well, but I've been burned by them so many times I avoid the stores/customer service like the plague! I actually went in a few months ago and made them give me a print out of all the upgrade dates for each line on my account, and had the store manager initial it. Taking no chances.

@ toneloco2881

A chilling story indeed.

Do you think we should go to the Apple Store since they may/may not have the ability to change features without going out of their way to do so? I've changed my mind from going to the AT&T Store.

im gana put voice recorder on and put my 3gs on the table next to me while i repeated say i want to keep the data plan. i will curse out everyone if i have to get it back cause an apple employ is retarded

I'm doing the radioshack trade in and actually have been worried about this. I don't really see people from radioshack as very professional and they are really more a reseller so who knows what might happen :S

resellers are actually better because their systems are more limited than att so they cant do that much to you account...or screw it up

Another sobering story, toneloco...

WOW...good for you to run it all the way up the chain of command. I have done the same thing with Citibank, Sears, QVC...you name it...

I agree. And with AT&T spouting left and right that we can upgrade without our plan being changed (all over their Facebook too), if it actually does happen... I honestly think with a little backbone and patience on our part, it won't be too hard to get back. Just keep going up!

...and you KNOW it will happen to somebody, Loren. The sad thing is that if some employee somehow sneaks it in, as in the story above, some people won't realize it until it's WAY too late.

Certainly, the chances are high for this to happen to someone.

No store employee will be able to remove the data plan from my account; the only way to do it would be through customer care.

That said, I use less than 2GB/month domestically, so it might actually be a good idea for me drop it.

That is awesome!

So what makes everyone here think that they will be able to keep the unlimited data plan on a new 2 year contract upgrade to the i4?

Seems to me that wherever you order it or however you order it if you are paying the subsidized price you will automatically be forced to choose one of the 2 data plans available.

I say this because you are moving to a device that requires one of 2 data plans to be activated. Kind of like how on Verizon you have to have a data plan in order to activate any smartphone made recently. I had a WM5 pocket PC (Samsung i730) that did not require a data plan when I upgraded to my HTC Touch Pro (a data plan required device) I had to change to a data plan in order to be allowed to activate the phone. Just like Sprint wont let you have an Android device activated on one of their older "sero" plans, they will most likely control what data plan you are allowed to have.

Basically ATT knows if you have an iPhone 4 you have to be on either 200mb or 2gb data plan in order for it to be activated.

This is just my opinion and hopefully is wrong for those who have an unlimited data plan still.
Just think of it like this ... What better way to move your main data users to a new data plan that we can charge more for overages than to make it a requirement for the new iPhone? They allow all the users that can upgrade in 2010 to do it when iPhone comes out.

AT&T has said that current iPhone users when upgrading to the new iPhone can keep their unlimited data plan if they wish.

Are you kidding? No.
No kidding, with the June 2 announcement of the new plans and the dropping of the Unlimited data plans for Smartphones, AT&T stated the following:

Current smartphone customers are not required to switch to the new plans, but can choose to do so without a contract extension.

So if you want one of new lower priced plans, that is an option and infact one of the new capped plans are required to get tethering for the iPhone 4.

Just a reminder: Once you drop one of the Unlimited data plans, you can't re-add it so check your data usage and see if you may benefit from the new plan options.

Here is a link to the data calculator and samples of what each might offer.

If you're worried, it's because you have no idea how AT&T's backend works.

Even if some idiot employee accidentally switched to a new data plan, a quick call and complaint to customer service would have the entire situation resolved.

Sorry but it is not always that easy. For example, once a SOC is expired from the system, the front line Care rep, RSC and even the executive team can't just "re-add" it to a line... :(

I do know a little about the AT&T systems: CARE and TELEGENCE, ATLAS, BOBSLED and CAM API’s, oh I almost forgot my favorite one DER

And my favorite comment: just call and have it "noted" on your account that you qualify for the "Upgrade". Sorry guys but those notes are just that "notes" and 9 times out of 10 the notes are not correct or reflect the previous or even the current issue.

Att already said they will let us keep it if we already have it.

Us having the unlimited data plan is not the same as a user having, say, Media Net (internet w/ txt and stuff for dumbphone) and then trying to use that on their smartphone. That plan doesn't fulfill the requrements. One would (or should) be swapped with the correct plan.

But the $30 dollar plan does meet the data requirements for iPhone, hence no reason to move us to a different teir.

If, once I get to that point in the activation process through iTunes, it does not indicate my grandfathered unlimited plan, I will stop the process and call...

Hope I can get through. :D

Opps, let's make sure we cover this again, that might be too late in the process if you are pre-ordering the iPhone 4.

For Pre-orders:

You will pick your data plan during the pre-order process, Please make sure to pick your current Unlimited plan. If you currently have an Unlimited Smartphone (iPhone, BlackBerry, Blueberry, you get the idea...) data plan and it does show up on the list, stop and get an answer before you proceed.

OK...If I begin EARLY enough in the pre-order process, this will give me plenty of time to address this issue with Customer Care.

THE POINT IS THAT I WILL NOT JUST WALK BLINDLY INTO A MISTAKE.

haha yep be very very careful when you get to that screen. I can see it already. me rushing through the pre-order to get it and then blowing by the data screen when it has the 2gb plane selected instead of mine. :S slow and steady. and double checking! I will be triple checking haha

I will have to say that I have been thinking about this since ATT decided to change their data plans. Do you guys think that it will be safer to order online for home delivery or preorder for store delivery ?
